Any dental experts out there?

DS (8) is getting his first 6 year molar, I would say it is about half in. The last couple of days DS has said his molar is loose, I paid no attention to it, thinking that isn't possible. Well tonight DS gets out of the tub and said his tooth fell out (here I am thinking it is one of the front teeth that are loose), but what it was is a piece of the molar. It is a small piece, smaller than a kernal of corn, but he was bleeding. The bleeding stopped and he said he doesn't have any pain. My question is should I be worried, does he need to be seen by a dentist? My problem is this (I posted a longer thread about this last month) we have no dental coverage, DH is in the military and we just moved back to the US from oversea's and DH is retiring in 6 months so they refuse to cover us since we have less than a year in service left. This was a total shock to us because we always had coverage, but we fall into a gray area. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm no dental expert (or even a parent) but if your son was cutting a permanent tooth and part of it fell out I would say, yes, he needs to see a dentist!

He definitely needs to see a dentist. It's the kind of thing that can often get worse if not treated quickly.

Thanks for your replies. I called a friend who works in a dentist office and explained the situation and she feels it isn't anything to worry about. She said it sounds like it was a piece of bone from the tooth coming out. She says it doesn't happen often, but it does happen that when the tooth passes through the bone and out through the gum that a piece of bone can come with it and that when it breaks off it will bleed. The piece that come off was so tiny that it makes sense that it was bone and not part of the tooth.

That sounds like something my DD9 has. It's like dental "tissue" that didn't form all the way into a tooth. Can't think what it's called. Luckily she does have a real tooth under it.

DS12 was at the orthodontist a few months ago and DS was complaining about something bothering(hurting) him. The Dr. look and saw that it was what I think he called a spur. He explained pretty much what you have been told. All he did was pull them out (both right and left side)with one of his instruments. That took care of DS pain.
