DH has been offered an interview with an airline that would have him based out of Columbus, Ohio.

I'm from the South. I've always lived in the South. I don't know if I can live anywhere else.

Can you tell me about it? What are the schools like? Does it snow there? What's the temperature today? Can I afford the housing? What is there to do in Columbus, Ohio?

Well I live inbetween Cleveland and Columbus. Today it was a nice 77. Yes it does snow but this year was a mild winter for us. I think my DD only had 1 snow day this year. I really can't help you with the schools or housing in that area. But I really like Ohio it is not such a bad place to live.

I've lived in Columbus for about 21 years now, so if I miss something, please feel free to PM me!

I have several friends in the South and truthfully part of the mid-west charm is that we can identify with the South quite a bit. Actually even though we are a norther state, you'll just need to travel a wee bit west or south and you can come across people proudly flying their Confederate flags... even barns painted with them on the roof

No, I'm not joking...

In general though, I like the feel of the midwest. A generally friendly population. I can walk around my neighborhood, wave to my neighbors, pet dogs that come up to me on my yard... that kind of thing. People are really friendly here and I would be hard pressed to find that in other places (so I feel).

You will find that in Columbus itself, the snow does come, but the closer you keep to the city, the less likely you'll get more than 2" of snow. However, we are fairly good to awesome at snow removal, so it never sticks on the roads for long.

I personally HATE snow! So if you move here, keep to the city & suburbs. I think we get about 15" total average snow. The summer you will find it is pretty much equal here. Right now we are warming up after a cool spell but I believe the thermometer I saw was mid 80s today. In the summer we get 80s and mid 90s regularly with very high humidity. I'm usually on par in the summer with my friend who lives in Montgomery AL.

The winters can be biting cold. I will not lie about that. It gets really really cold here. We do get in the teens, single digits and below yearly. We aren't as bad as Minnesota, that's for sure, but we are not by any means a "temperate" climate.

Schools... totally varies by school districts. Columbus City Schools pretty much suck. They might be better on average than the major city schools of the South, but I would never send my child to Columbus City Schools. The suburbs of Dublin, Grandview, Hilliard, Westerville, Worthington and Upper Arlington are particularly good... actually downright excellent in many of those cases.

Housing will be expensive by comparison though. And so might taxes. But truthfully the higher the taxes you pay, the better schools you get.

If I missed anything or if you have any questions, please PM me :)

Thanks for the info, Helenabear...

In the South, our housing prices are much lower, but we just don't send our kids to public schools. I suppose it all balances out in the end, cost-wise.

Anyone else w/info?

Elaine, You forgot to mention the DIS Meets at Towncriers! :teeth: That, in itself, is good reason to relocate! :)

Okay, I'm not from Columbus but I am an Ohioan! Does that count for anything?

Yes it does snow. There is a saying "if you don't like the weather here, wait five minutes, it'll change!"

There are many shopping attractions, zoos, waterparks, etc. We also have awesome things like Cedar Point (America's Rockin' ROLLERCOAST! with 68 attractions, including 16 coasters), Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Kings Island, and pretty tasty cuisine!
