We are going to be there on May 14-15 and was wondering what the chances are they have a soft opening during that time?

I'll be there May 7-8 and I was really unhappy when I heard the Matterhorn was closed. I was hoping it would be open a week early!

They are supposed to open on the 15th. You might see a soft open on the 14th, but you would need to be hovering to catch it open.

well on Disneyland.com it says its opening on the 16th so that's why I was wondering

There is always a chance that they'll open the attraction early for testing, but it probably won't be for the full day. They don't normally announce things like that (not inside the park or via social media), so you'll either need to see the attraction running with guests on it or hear someone talking about it and then hope that when you get there, they are still testing it.

The first time we visited as a family (about 4 years ago) Matterhorn was closed for the week of our vacation and opened the next day. It did open the last night of our trip and we each got to ride once (riderswap). You never know, but don't go expecting it to.

We don't have a ton of experience with this, but last time we were in DL after Indiana Jones had been under a long rehab and was supposed to open the day after we left. Well, our last day they did have it open- no FP's and warnings that the ride could go down at any time, but we were able to ride it twice.

One of the benefits for you, OP, is that Matterhorn is quite loud when it is running. So you might here bobsleds running in testing while there, but once people hop aboard you hear screaming AND bobsleds. Maybe if you spend your afternoon in Fantasyland/outside in Tomorrowland you can keep an eye/ear out and still make the most of your day in DL.
