Any Cell Service in Eastern Caribbean?

Has anyone had luck using their cell phone in/around St. Maarten or St. Thomas. I'm just trying to avoid the hefty ship to shore phone charges!

Yes. I had cell service in St. Thomas with ATT. The cost was relatively low, about $.60 per minute compared to $6.95 ship to shore. My phone worked in St. Maarten but when I tried to call, I received a message that said I was not registered in the network and to hold for an operator. I didn't hold.

I couldn't avoid having to call because of work related issues. BUt, if you can avoid it, it is supposed to be a vacation!

We had a good signal on the ship while we were at St. Thomas. We also were able to get service at St. Marteen. We have Suncom.

My experiences with AT&T digital one rate and a Nokia 5160? phone is that you can add international calling as an option for a $5.95 hookup and $5.95 a month thereafter.

Calls are then 1 to 4 bucks a minute based upon where you are.

We had service in Cozymel, Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, and Plaza Del Carman on our last trip. No service on the high seas but around the ports we had a really good signal.

Worked good, great peace of mind with the kids at grandparents.

We had service with our Sprint PCS phone in St. Thomas (and Puerto Rico where we had a change of itinerary stop). No additional charges, just used minutes in our package as if we were at home. We were on the ship when the US started attacking Afghanistan so it was nice to be able to speak with family and get additional details.
