We are a family of carnivores. What can I say, we love a great steak. :lmao: Anyway last week we were visiting an Amish market outside of Philly and brought some steaks that were "grass feed" "hormone free".
Now I'm going to admit, I have not paid alot of attention to the debate, I'm pretty much a "what's on sale" type of gal but this steak was heaven (and I cooked it, moi who is notorious for over cooking steak).

So I've been looking at my local shoprite and acme but neither of them carry it. nada Should I try a whole food store? The Amish market where I picked up this one is too far. Am I asking for the wrong thing?

Where do you pick up "grass feed" beef?

We can buy Organic, Grass Fed, beef right at Wegmans. We pretty much only buy organics too.

Yes, but I have either ordered it from a farm co-op or bought it at a farmer's market. Most mainstream grocery stores will not have it. You can probably find it at Whole Foods if you have one of those.

It's the way meat should be and was probably how all our beef was until the very early 70s.

We can get grass fed organic beef (and other meats, too, I think) at our local Earth Fare grocery store. I haven't bought any myself (too much of a cheapskate), but we tried it at a tasting booth, and it was really good!

Some of our local supermarkets carry grass-fed organic beef from time to time. The best place to get it here are at farmer's markets or at a local permanent market that we have. Some of our local butcher markets also carry it.

If you like grass-fed beef and are trying to eat healthier red meats I highly recommend trying bison. It can dry out so you will have to be a bit more careful when cooking it but I usually brush some olive oil on it and it helps keep the moisture in.

I have to admit I am partial to bison burgers with some yummy mozzerella and saute jalepenos.

Never tried Bison. I've seen it on menus a few time. Thanks for the tip.

I will admit it is more of "taste" than health that prompted me to ask the question. Honestly, the steak was so flavorful. without salt and steak sauce. Some times the steaks I get at the supermarket are absolutely tasteless () I have to add so salt, pepper and steak sauce before you can get a flavor. this steak was not.
the butcher said it was because it was grass feed and allowed to grow naturally and not fattened up artifically with grain and hormones.

Now like I said, I never paid attention to the grain vs. grass argument because I tend to shop by price  so I couldn't argue those points but if I went on flavor alone. The steak I got from the farmers market wins hands down.

The link a pp gave, eatwild.com will have a list of farms in your state (I linked you to NJ since I see that's where you are from ;) ). A farm near us used to deliver it right to our front porch with our milk, but they have since stopped delivering to our town. I miss it.

I know that Whole Foods has grass fed beef. I have never purchased it, but tasted it, YUM.

I never really bought into the whole organic thing, but unfortunately, I have tasted the difference. We bought some bananas at whole food, they were on sale and cost the same as my usual kind. Big difference, so I tried apples, big difference. My last organic purchase was milk, (I don't like milk) this stff is great. The fat free has the texture and taste of 2% according to hubby who is a milk freak. And it doesn't go bad. So long story short, before too long I am sure I will be on the bad wagon for only grass fed beef. I wish I had never tasted the difference. It would be mush easier on the budget.

If you have a Whole Foods near you, you will be able to buy it there. Whole Foods sells bison also. My DH prefers the flavor of grass fed beef, so that is what I usually get. One time I had a bunch of people over for dinner and I cooked up both grass fed and corn finished ribeye steaks, then gave everyone some of each and asked for a vote. Most people felt that the grass fed had the best flavor, and the corn finished had the best texture. I don't eat red meat, so I have no opinion!

We've been ordering from La Cence Beef for about 2 years. Their hot dogs are really yummy.

Yes, that's what surprised me when I "went' organic a few years ago. The quality is almost always better than traditional foods. To me, I'm not paying a higher price because it's organic, I'm paying a higher prices because it's higher quality. :thumbsup2

Bingo. We don't each as much meat as we used to, but what we do eat is mostly "local" and organic (DH hunts, so we use venison instead of beef most of the time, anyway).
Love the flavor of grass-fed beef. Yum.

The grocery store--but then we live in MN so we are lucky. Actually, we get most of our beef at Sam's Club. It is surprisingly good.

Op I get it for my dh right from a local farm
or farmers market
we also get grass fed dairy too
