Ok, I have narrowed my choice to a midship cat 4 cabin and there are quite a few available for my intended dates next Aug. Now I am wondering 2 things:

Is there any benefit of being on one side or the other in terms of watching the ship arrive in dock, views etc

Are the stairs midship right next to the elevators and is it a convenient location to be in the midship near the stairs/elevators on deck 8?

Thanks once again for all the valuable advice for this cruising newbie!

Nicola :)

Good thing I searched the threads I was getting ready to ask the same question, I would like to expand to

1) P v S on the 3 or 4 day
2) P v S on the Eastern
3) P v S on the Western

Thanks in Advance to the Vets who can helps us out! :bounce:

The best location is on the ship, sailing off into the sunset, rather than being at home and at work doing the "real life" stuff that life requires.

But seriously - what do you want to see? the pier? the water? both? the town when in port other than CC? And how long you going to stay inside enjoying your view when you could be outside experiencing the docking / port.

My favorite place to watch arriving in ports is up on deck 10 looking down upon the Captain and crew piloting that huge ship into place without too much trouble.

bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! Thanks for the laugh this afternoon as I'm buried in real life tedium but dreamin' of December.... less than 5 months now for me.

We have stayed on both sides and both times we have had a wonderful view of CC. I think it really depends on which way the captain decides to dock or has to dock.

Again, it determines on how the Captain docks at the various ports. We've sailed both port and starboard side and both have offered great views. We're sailing port side next time, no real reason. Personally if you're getting a cat 4 on deck 8, think about aft. It's my favorite place and there is a secret stairway behind stateroom 8094 and the last cat 4 on the starboard side. Very convient to go up to Topsiders for breakfast and very close to the aft stairs for the drink station and Mickey pool. Just make sure you get a clear veranda as the last 3 cat 4's on either side have the solid veranda.

Lori,

Thanks for the info (and everyone else) the reason we were thinking about midship is that I heard that is the best place to avoid potential sea sickness but I do also want to be close to the pool/topsiders etc if poss so I will have a think about aft!

Decisions, decisions, does it take everyone else this long to decide??

Nicola

We were on the port side and had a great view of docking activities down below and a view of Philipsburg when we docked in St. Maarten. The view became slightly blocked when the Golden Princess docked next to us. We also anchored at St. Thomas and port side had a view of Charlotte Amalie. We backed in at CC and had a view of the other side of the island and out to sea, but we could see all the activity down below on the dock.
