A co-worker of mine has had the most harrowing experience with bed bugs. They have no idea where they came froml (most likely her DH's business trips) but it's been several weeks, $2000, and an unbelievable amount of work getting rid of them. Are there any reports of bed bugs at WDW and are they doing things proactively to keep them out? I'm feeling a little paranoid after my friend's experience.

Check the beds before taking your luggage into the room.

There are websites with tips on how to check for bedbugs.

My friend that had them in her house looked and looked and couldn't find them. They hide during the day so they're not easy to find. She said that she wouldn't have ever known that they had them if her son didn't wake up every morning with bites. The exterminator was able to find a couple and show her but she lifted the mattress and everything without ever seeing any evidence of them. That's what makes me nervous.

Has anyone heard of anyone getting bed bugs from WDW?

If you fly, check your luggage before you bring it into the room. You may be the problem, not the room.

Bed bugs has to be reported and their are websites that list everywhere that has reported a problem.

We are going in Sept and staying at POFQ. I have never had bedbugs and do not want to have any. I hope there are not any in our room when we go :scared1:

If they get in your luggage from some where on your way to Disney how would you even find them :confused3

I too have a friend who had bed bugs and it was a complete nightmare. Before that happened I was not a big worrier about the subject. Now I lean way more toward the paranoid side. This is our process when we sleep anywhere but our own beds(some will think it is extreme but I think these would be people that have never had or known anyone who had bedbugs). We thouroughly check the room for any evidence of bedbugs before bringing our luggage in the room. I also bring along bedbug spray as a proactive measure and spray the beds before we sleep in them. When we come home all of our luggage is downloaded into the garage. I transfer the cloths from the garage straight into the washer using special laundry detergent that kills bedubgs. I also leave our empy open luggage in the garage along with our car with all the doors open and set off a bed bug bomb. Once that is complete, I bring the luggage back again. Again, paranoid but I never want to go through what my friend went through.

Having said all this I did hear that Disney has bedbug sniffing dogs(I would love to train one of my dogs to do this:)) and Disney would also have to report it if they have had a single case of bedbugs.

They can be found anywhere. WDW, cruise ships, 5 star hotels, remote areas and big cities. The best thing you can do is be educated so you know what to look for when you check in anywhere. If you find anything to indicate they are present notify the front desk before bringing your luggage in and demand another room. Spraying mattresses in hotel rooms really doesn't do much because they can be behind headboards, in electrical outlets, behind pictures etc. Extreme cold will kill them so if you travel in winter and live in a climate that gets really cold, leaving luggage outside for a while may be a good course of action.

I suppose the same way you find them in the room. They have to get to the room somehow and they aren't making a reservation. They have to come with someone's luggage.

Don't bother with sprays or bug repellants. It take temperature extremes to kill them, either very hot or very cold. I think most hotels use heat to get rid of them.
