I have a 6yr old white shepherd (female) and I just adopted an 18 month old brittany spaniel(male). I'm wondering how anyone else would let them get used to each other. When I brought Snickers home I had Bella out on the deck and slowly introduced Snickers her way. They sniffed, checked each other out, and then Bella growled at him. He must have gotten too close. Snickers seems like a very easygoing dog but Bella is a bit more reserved. I would love to have them be friends. I know I was told that it wouldn't happen right away probably but does anyone have any advice for me?:listen:

Just keep on introducing them a little more each day. Always stay close by. This may go smoothly or there may be some issues.

My collie Jasmine was 4, when we brought Bella, another collie (yep I have a Bella too) home. Bella was just shy of 2. Both were intact females (not spayed).

Jasmine grew up as a pup with my other 2 older collies. So she was used to being around other dogs. One was put down when she was still a pup, the other about 6 months before we brought Bella home.

Neither had any issues at first but eventually Bella challenged Jasmine for the alpha position. This went on a few times. Jasmine kept her title. But a collie is a collie. They are not usually fighters, so just a high pitched yell and the fighting stopped. Be prepared because sometimes with certain breeds the fights can get escalated.

There weren't any issues for months. They're buds now, sleeping together, playing together. They've been together a little more than a year now. A month ago, I got Bella spayed, Jasmine is still intact. Jasmine has gone after Bella a couple times recently, barking snapping and Bella backs down instantly. I'm just always keeping an eye out. Not sure if Jasmine just wants to remind Bella she's boss. Because Bella never fights back, just wags her tail and licks Jasmine on the face.

Are your dogs fixed? That could have alot to do with it. Male and female usually get along better than the same sex. One will try to determine dominance eventually, just be ready.

Hope all goes well.

Do it Cesar's way! Walk, walk, walk, walk.....keep them together walking and tired!
Walking together will bond all of you.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Bella has been spayed and Snickers is going to be neutered shortly. He just got sprung from the animal shelter in a nearby town. So I have a certificate to use. I have to say that this dog is a dream come true! He is so good with people and car rides etc. It would be wonderful if Bella could pick up some of his personality.

I'm sure they will work out a good relationship. My money is on Bella to be the dominant one, though, the bi***es usually are. I have a friend, a former co worker, who has a very large intact male Airedale Terrier, very agressive, and when we worked together, we often brought our dogs to work with us, we're groomers. My little dog is a spayed female pug - pomeranian (probably) mix, about 12lbs. If she felt like it, she would trot right up to him and take a chewey right out of his mouth. He would just look at her with a besotted grin on his face, and let her walk off with it. It was comical.
