Hi All!
Kids?! There were kids on our
Disney Cruise?! Who knew?! Seriously, when we took our first
DCL cruise in 2005 on the Magic's first season here in California (which was our first cruise of any kind) we were traveling as part of a larger group, so we kind of had the with kids/without kids experience as we did have some younger people with us (8, 10, 10 & 13). but did not have any kids of our own with us.
I know the kids were there because they are in some of the pictures and we saw them at breakfast and dinner but that was about it. Basically the kids had their cruise experience and we had ours with very little commingling.
As for being "bothered" by other peoples children, (while I agree that this is one of my pet peeves - especially when I am dining, one poorly behaved child with an inattentive parent really can ruin a meal,) I never experienced that on the ship... Not even once. Quite the contrary in fact.
Personally, I think part of the magic of these particular cruises is getting to be a fly on the wall (albeit a rather large one

and seeing first hand the sheer unadulterated joy in a little one's face when they come upon their favorite character walking on the deck; Or watching a tiny girl twirling just to make her princess dress spin; Or having a pint sized Jack Sparrow challenge you to a duel. But most of all it is seeing loving families enjoying their time together and remembering what it was like when you were that little princess or pirate and the world was a friendly and magical place.
So I think your friend was wrong, especially if you are a Disney fan. Actually, I think your friend might have been wrong even if you aren't a hardcore disneyphile. My DH wasn't and isn't and when we first were invited on the cruise in '05 he only agreed to go initially because of who invited us (as he also had no great love for "boats"). But he is a good sport and I was really excited so he reluctantly agreed.
We were aboard the ship for about 1/2 hour, the sail away party hadn't begun and we were still a couple hours from even leaving port when he turned to me and said "I could do this again". And now we are both happily preparing for our second Disney Cruise to Alaska in July and already discussing our third. Such is the magic of these very special vessels. And, personally I think that is something everyone would enjoy!
Take care all, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

P.S. Whether you are traveling with kids or without, in a large group or flying solo, I highly recommend popping over to the Cruise Meets thread once you choose your sailing. There you will find other Dis'ers who will be sharing your journey and who will make the trip even more special and fun.
