I tried seaching and came up empty. I am just starting to consider a Wii as a combined family gift this year. I am very interested in the Wii fit. With these long, dark cold winters and me really needing to move more I think it would be fun.

I started trying to find info and it is so overwhelming. If I decided to get this what all would I need to purchase? I can look up prices I just want to know what components really make the system work best. I have heard mention of a Wii fit bundle?

Maybe getting set up with this system is totally out of my league but if I knew what I was looking for I could start picking away.

Thanks everyone!!

I found Wii Fit too expensive and really not needed. A good thing to have is another Wii-mote so two people can play at one time. That should be good enough. Wii Sports comes with the unit and it's just as good as Wii Fit and doesn't cost extra. Rayman Raving Rabbids is fun. It's mini games battling fuzzy and strange bunnies. It's a real workout.

I will check out getting a Wii with and extra Wii-mote and the Rayman Raving Rabbids game.

What comes with the Wii unit? Anything?

I really like my wii fit. It has a collection of mini games that help you get active, plus guided yoga, stretching, and exercises. There is a LOT of different games and things you can do with it -- should keep you busy for quite a while.

You don't need to buy any kind of "bundle" (usually that just means they have packaged the wii fit itself with a bunch of crap you don't need, like an exercise mat and stuff.)

Just buy the "wii fit" itself. It is a box that has the disk with all the exercises and games on it, plus a "balance board". You stand on the balance board while playing the games and doing the exercises. It senses whether you're doing it right and gives you feedback. Basically the box will have everything you need.

There's also a new game out called "active life" or maybe "outdoor life". I have it on order. It is like the wii fit, but has a lot more "games" (more kid and "play" oriented than the adult oriented wii fit) and you play with a mat on the floor (that it comes with) rather than a balance board. That might be a good option for you. I think it is aroun 60 dollars.

It actually comes with the "sports" games disk. Also you'll get one wiimote. There is a game you can purchase that is called "Wii Play". It is around 50 dollars and has a game (actually a bunch of varied games -- very fun!) plus the extra wiimote. I think usually a wiimote is around 40 dollars just by itself, so "wii play" is a great deal!

Depending on how many kids you have and what games you get, you may want to consider a couple of extra controllers. My kids (12, 10, 7, & 4) like Super Mario the best - we could use a 3rd controller so the 3 older kids could all play together. There is a game called Wii Play that comes with a controller - it is a sports game so you get a game and a controller. I figure that is a pretty good deal. Check the boxes of the games to see how many players can play at a time. Other favorites: Super Smash Bros., Lego Star Wars & Indiana Jones (we have these for the Nintendo Ds). I am planning on getting the Guitar Hero and Star Wars Force Unleashed or Clon Wars this Christmas.

We has a DS15 and a DD14. So I am looking for

1. The Wii unit itself (one Wii mote)
2. Wii play (one Wii mote)
3. 2 extra Wii motes (I should probably get enough controllers for all 4 of us.)
3. Another game or two that the whole family can play together.

This should be enough to get us up and running on Christmas morning right?

Do the Wii motes use batteries or are they rechargable?

I am off to check out prices now to see if I can even consider this and then of course there is the whole finding the stuff issue.

Another quick question....

Do the games off of any other game systems work on the Wii??

Our kids are 8,3 and 2. The two games that the whole family plays are Carnival games and Rock Band. The kids really like Lego Star Wars and Indiana Jones Lego. I don't normally allow shooting games but those are lego people so I tolerate it. All the Mario games are great too. You can also play gamecube games on the Wii.

I was one of the lucky few to get a Wii when they first came out a couple of years ago, and I can honestly say I have everything that you and PPs have mentioned. I have the console, Wii Fit w/balance board, Raving Rabbids (BEST GAME EVER!!!) Wii play, Wii sports, and my 10 year old DD loves to play baseball, which is fun. We used to have a Gamecube and she plays all of her old GC games on the Wii also. Get a Wii. Get enough Wiimotes for everyone in your family. If you want to work out in a fun way, get the Wii fit too. Raving Rabbids is a must have for kids and adults. Wii Sports is great, we play tennis and bowl a lot. Wii Play was kind of a let down for us. It is great for the little ones though. It just wasn't challenging enough for us. My Wiimotes use AA batteries, and make sure you use the wrist strap when you play so you don't have to spackle the wall behind the TV like I've had to three times in the last year. LOL

Nintendo Gamecube games will work on it. They are pretty cheap used so they can be a nice, inexpensive supplement to your wii games.

We LOVE our Wii Fit. It isn't absolutely necessary to have one, but it sure is a wonderful addition to our repetoire and has gotten everyone moving, even me! It's very motivating and fun.

For us, the Wii Fit was the difference between a toy the kids used, and something Mom uses as part of her exercise routine. At $100, its a lot cheaper than yoga classes or going to the gym. And its tucked under the coffee table, so its more convenient than the gym. We use the balance board more than the Wii alone.

But, if she doesn't have a Gamecube, will she need to buy a different controller to use the Gamecube games on the wii?

Add us to the Wii for Christmas group - we are getting one too.. Anyone have any other good games to reccommend.

Very informative thread! And very helpful as well!!! I just bought a Wii and the Wii Fit yesterday for our "family" gift for Christmas. Looks like I need to get the Wii Play for the extra remote. I'm also hoping to get a couple of cheap games on Black Friday or a sale between now and Christmas. This really looks like something our entire family (DH, myself, DS4 and DS2 [by Christmas]) can all do together and have fun. I've *very* excited about this and cannot wait to see everyone having a great time being active and being together!!:goodvibes

MIL came up for Christmas last year and got us a Wii as a family present. Just the Wii Sports and Wii Play that came with the system and remote were enough to get us started for a while. Creating a Mii for each person in the family and compteting in the sports and games is alot of fun for all ages. My extended family (siblings, parents, grandparents) came over often to play and they all have a Mii on our system. Do the kids know you're getting the Wii? If not, I would surprise them with the Wii and play with just the sports & wii play for a few days after Christmas. Then maybe one of their gifts could be to go out and each pick out a game that they want.

I would not suggest getting 4 remotes. That just seems unnecessary. We have two and that has been sufficient. Most games only have two player options or the remotes can be shared for more than two players. If you decide you need extra remotes you can buy them later, but I would be upset to buy them and then not ever use them.

The Mario games are really fun. We have Super Mario Galaxy and MarioKart. Those are our most played games along with the Wii Sports.

I'd have reasonable expectations. We are a video game family - and my kids at four and six had no ability to use video games - well, my son did a little at four - but it wasn't really until six before he got it.

I agree 100% and have been telling anyone who will listen how much I love the Wii Fit. :thumbsup2

Bundles usually aren't any cheaper than buying each component individually.

We have the Wii and the Wii Fit. We use it quite a bit. We bought the Wii back in March and the Wii Fit just last month. We have a great time with them. To obtain ours, we called a number of stores to inquire if they had them. Then we discovered that our local Gamestop got their shipments in on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, so we targeted those days. Called on a Tuesday, had our Wii that night. Called Tuesday after Labor Day, no Wii Fit, try tomorrow. Called Wednesday and we had it in hand.

A friend did the same thing last week and got both the Wii and the Wii Fit. Wii on Tuesday and Wii Fit on Wednesday. Gamestop was great!
