Do leave a tip on take out orders? I never did, I thought this was the great thing about take out was that you didn't have to spend the extra $5 or whatever it should be. We can save $10+ on take out not having to tip or get drinks. A friend said that they always leave a tip for take out. Now, the last couple of times I have because I felt cheap.

So, what do you do?

I guess we are cheap too because we don't leave a tip for take out. Next thing you know it is going to be expected to tip at McD's.

I don't. Never thought to. Who would you tip? They really aren't doing anything but giving you your order and ringing you up. :confused3

I do - but I worked in restaurants for many years. The 'take out' folks at Outback, for instance - make what the servers make. Yeah...just over nothing!!! And with their little system "Curb Side Take Away" they did it like that, so these kids would get tips. :confused3

So, I do - I know they treat your food, like a server would. They'd gey anxious when it took too long, they got all your condiments together, extras etc..... the food actually comes out on regular plates...they box it up for you.

Yeah - I give 'em a few bucks. Usually 10%-ish of the check.

It depends on the location for me. We don't do much takeout but if we do and it's a place that runs the take out through the bar... then yes, I will tip the bartender who places the order and packages it. If it's a location where it's waiting for us at the hostess station... then no.

For a true CS place like McDonalds, no. For a curbside service place, yes, between 10-20% depending on how good the service is. The kid that always makes sure we get two loaves of bread at Carrabba's always gets 20%. :thumbsup2

For curbside delivery I will give a few bucks but not when I go in and pick it up myself.

We do if it is from a sit-down restaurant (and Sonic :) )

Always tip on takeout. I spent many years waiting tables. I know that they (me sometimes) work very hard to get orders correct and to make your takeout a pleasurable experience.

I leave whatever change there is.

It can add up, as our 1$ and 2$ are in coin.:)

We tip for curbside delivery and 15- 20% for any Sushi carryout. The tip is for the Sushi chefs due to the preparation time and effort.

I don't usually, but the only take-out we usually get is Chinese or pizza.

I used to wait tables at a hotel restaurant, and when people asked for take-out, a waitress had to take the order, enter it into the system, get it from the kitchen, get all the condiments together, and package it up. We also had to collect the money and process it through our daily totals. That means we had to claim we got a 8% tip on it for tax purposes, whether we actually did or not (usually not). And it was almost as much work as waiting on the tables themselves.

I am not sure how restaurants process this today, hopefully it is better than where I worked.

I never do. We don't usually do take-out though.

I did work in as a waitress for a short time when I first started working. For our tips, we counted them at the end of the night and gave our totals. There was no automatic anything. This was way back when though and a small diner but a franchise, so I assume it was standard practice everywhere. It was Colonial.

Take out really didn't affect us one way or the other. Usually it was just a matter of putting it in a bag & ringing them up. It was nothing like having to actual wait a table. It was already put in to go containers for us by the cook.

Unless they run it out to my car, no. If they do run it out, I'll leave about $2.

::yes::

we don't tip for things like pizza or chinese, but we always do at casual dining places like Texas Roadhouse and Chilis. I know they have to put the orders together and still only make what a waitress makes, so it only seems fair I should leave them a tip. Its usually only 10% or so.
