Another ticket upgrade question

I plan on ordering tickets within the next few weeks from UT to avoid the upcoming ticket price increase. My trip isn't until May. It will be me and my son traveling. I plan to upgrade my ticket to an AP after arriving, but not my son's. In the past I've ordered whatever ticket was the most deeply discounted from UT and upgraded to an AP upon arrival to take advantage of price bridging. But now that FP+ reservations can be made is it a better idea to order the exact number of days we will be staying so that I can do my FPs 60 days out?

Also, I plan on upgrading to a Premium pass this time. Do I have to buy a ticket from UT that includes the WP&M option to do this upgrade?

We are staying at the Poly and from reading the construction updates there is a good possibility that the pool will not be completed. I have read that they are giving a one day Water park pass to guests. We want to spend one day at Typhoon Lagoon for this trip. Should I buy my son a regular ticket thinking that we might get a water park ticket if the pool is not opened? Can I add the water park and more option to his ticket when we get there if that is not the case?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I agree it would be ideal to buy tickets with the number of days you'll be scheduling FP+. UCT doesn't usually have every single ticket (e.g., they have 8 day tickets but not 9-day tickets). If you have to buy a ticket with more days than you need, and you plan to upgrade to AP, then it won't matter as long as the ticket is priced lower than the AP you're upgrading to.

You don't need to buy the WPF&M option in order to upgrade to Premium AP.

Depending on your son's age, you could get the WPF&M option or just a single day WP admission. The single WP admission for age 3-9 is 45+tax. Age 10+ is $53+tax. If you're considering WPF&M for your son, but not Park Hopper/WPF&M combo, then it'll cost $60+tax for your son's ticket (if it's a 4-day ticket or higher). But the WPF&M option will also have admission to Disney Quest, Mini Golf, etc. You can decide about the WPF&M option after you arrive at WDW and learn the latest about the situation with the Poly pool/WP ticket program. If ticket prices increase before your trip, be sure to use your UCT tickets first before doing your ticket upgrades.

I think that's a good idea if the FP arrangements are important to you.

The Premium pass includes waterparks, so if you're upgrading your son to that you don't need to worry about getting him a waterpark pass.

If you buy a WP&M-including ticket and USE that part of the ticket, then you have no choice but to upgrade it to a premium (vs normal) AP. But you don't have to start with a WP&M ticket to go to a Premium AP. Does that make sense?
