I am a fan of both sets of parks for different reasons. I do not have any kids, however I am keenly aware that I have seen small children having fun at BOTH Disney and Universal. Oftentimes when kids under the age of 6 are in a theme park, it's not all about how MUCH there is to do or how MANY rides there are, it's just being there on a ride or two. When my sister was little (we're 12 years apart), we brought her to Universal and put her on the Caro-seuss-el and when the ride stopped she wanted to go again (and again). Then we finally got her over to The Cat in the Hat and the same thing happened. My point is she would have been happy if we let her sit on those 2 rides all day long....she was too little to realize that there might be other things to do at those parks!
Now with an older child or a teenager, they are keenly aware that they "already did that" and need more things to do. They are running from attraction to attraction and keeping busy. And that's good, because Universal DOES have a ton of things for that age bracket.
I am never one to bash Disney. The pixie dust is definitely still there for me. I never compare Universal parks to the Disney parks. They to me are like comparing apples to TVs. Universal has it's own special feeling, like walking through Seuss Landing or Jurassic Park... But there is also nothing like walking up Main Street in the Magic Kingdom with old classic Disney music playing either. When I am in the mood to go to Disney, that's where I go. When I'm in the mood for Universal, I go there.
My personal feeling is that Universal or Warner Brothers or Six Flags or any of those parks will NEVER be Disney. Disney is built on a legacy of one man's dream. It goes way back to the beginning of when Walt Disney was a creative visionary. There is nostalgia, there are memories, there are fascinations with the Disney family and their legacy. Universal will never be able to compete with that. I'm not saying that everything the Disney companies do I approve of or understand but if you're looking at it from the parks standpoint then I do "get it". That being said, Universal put a LOT of thought into their parks as well, but as far as ever surpassing Disney, I just don't see that happening. I love Universal's parks and am very excited at what they've done over the years and I am really looking forward to seeing a permanent show of the Blue Man Group there. It proves that Universal is out there and wanting to be a major player.
I personally think that if Universal stopped worrying so much about what Disney is doing and tried some of their own unique ideas, that they'd have a better campaign to get people there. Universal just rolled out the "renewed pin trading campaign" to their employees. I'm sorry, that's just a jump on Disney's bandwagon and I think a poor attempt at it. Disney just has so much more to draw on when it comes to pin trading. Pin trading didn't do well at Universal to begin with, why would it now? Anyway, of course all of these are just my opinions.
Have a great day everyone!
