Some of my favorite posts to read on the Dis are the observations and experience posts of people just returned so I’m hoping my thoughts can help a few people out. Otherwise, these are just idle ramblings (emphasis on the rambling!) of a diehard but easily frustrated Disney fan. These are my observations and experiences from last week, May 9-16 and I realize that they may be exactly the opposite of what others may have experienced or thought. That’s okay! We all have the right to our own opinions!
Also, I considered calling this post the agony and the ecstasy but that seemed overly dramatic.
Background
-We are by no means experts but this was our fifth trip in about seven years in what I would call the modern era of WDW (basically not when I was a kid) and I’ve researched and planned each of those pretty extensively. Of those trips, three were all adult groups and one was when my DD was 18 months old, with grandparents in tow. So, anyway, not nearly as expert as many but not newbies and fairly well versed in most things Disney.
-Our travel group was just me (Mom-35), DH-36, and DD-one month shy of 3 years old.
-We drove to the World from Kentucky and stayed at Pop. In the past we’ve stayed at POR twice, OKW in a 2 bedroom villa once (sweet digs-I missed that!), and a tent at FW once (a looong story for another time).
-As similar reports from the week have mentioned, the crowds were pretty low but temperatures were very high. We really struggled with the heat all week. This was our third trip in May and we’ve never experienced that before. It really affected our touring and schedules (not to mention our attitudes and energy levels!) all week. I bow down to people who visit during the summer who are dealing with the high temps AND high crowds.
Hotel
-When I reserved our room at Pop, I requested a king bed and booked a standard room. I made no other requests because we really only wanted the king. I would have paid for it given the option. About two hours before we arrived, I got a text giving me my room number and it was in the 80s. I called to see if it was a king and it was not. They switched us to a king with a free upgrade to a preferred location in the 70s. This was pixie dust for us. On the phone, they told me this invalidated my online check in and we’d have to come to the front desk, which was fine but before we got there, I got another text with the new room number and we went straight to the room. Magic.
-I really wanted the king because it would be easier for our DD to sleep between us than have to deal with bed rails and it would free up a little space in the room. I was concerned about the small rooms with all the junk we take with us but I brought some storage solutions along and those were life savers. Our room was actually very comfortable and we didn’t miss the extra space of a POR room at all.
-We found most of the amenities of Pop to be all or more than we needed, and lots of fun to boot. My little one loved the pool and all the big statues. The only two complaints I had with Pop are covered in two other areas, beginning with…
Transportation
-Why in the name of all that is holy do they not have a roof over the bus waiting areas at Pop?!? We only rode the bus two times and had fairly unfortunate experiences both times. These were made 10 times worse by standing in the direct sun waiting for the bus to never come.
-I know this is hotly debated, but we find that it works best for us to drive to the parks. Now, my opinion is colored by the inclusion of a little one and giant stroller and large back pack that comes along with that. We used to be total bus devotees, leaving our car in the lot all week but after we tried driving to the parks once we never looked back. You may still have to take a tram (or at MK the tram and monorail) but at least you won’t be waiting forever with no bus in sight to stand next to a sweaty stranger juggling all the same crap you are. The trams seem to come one right after the other without the long waits of the bus, in our experience. Disney seems to have mastered the parking and tram procedure more efficiently than the bus schedule.
Dining
-For our pre kiddo trips, we loved the dining plan. It was like date night every night. Those days are gone and we skipped it this time. For us, it just works out much better and cheaper. We were able to share meals or eat snacks rather than feel like we had to stuff ourselves, then have dessert. I shopped the first day (worst WalMart ever) and got drinks, snacks, and breakfast for the room, which also makes a huge difference.
-The whole pizza, while not the best pizza ever, is probably the best deal going in the food courts. But, we ordered one with “beef” expecting ground beef and no joke, there was cut up hamburgers on it. We just picked them off but it was weird.
-The only two ADRs we had were a lunch at H&V for the Disney Jr. characters and a princess breakfast at Akershus. Obviously made with DD in mind. The food at H&V was much better than I expected based on the reviews it gets and breakfast at Akershus was quite good, although way overpriced. But like we all know, we’re not paying for the food and the characters were okay at H&V and great at Akershus. My DD was beside herself with the princesses so I’m sure I’d have paid more to see that. Character meals totally stress me out though. I’m always afraid we’ll get skipped or be gone when they come by or the kid in front of us will take too long and cut into our time. I know this is crazy but it wears me out!
-We visited Fort Wilderness one night for the campfire but it rained so we were able to do an immediate walk up at Trails End. This was our best meal of the whole trip and almost reasonably priced (unprecendented for Disney). Then we went to the barn and visited the horses. It was a really great peaceful night.
Technology-Magic Bands/MDE/Wifi
-Magic Bands worked perfectly 100% of the time. Honestly, I love them.
-MDE worked pretty quickly for us and mostly perfectly. Again, a fan.
-Wifi-I had more trouble in the hotel than the parks. DD wanted to facetime Grandaddy several times and it was like we had to stand on our heads with a finger pointing the right way to make that work.
Parks/FP+/Touring Schedule (anybody still out there?)
-A little additional background… we’ve had great times at Disney as adults only and have ridden EE as many as 10 times in a row. This was not that kind of trip. We came here to bring our two year old DD and for her to enjoy it so we were definitely in a different frame of mind.
-We are not RD people. I wish we were, especially in that kind of heat but it’s time for me to accept that we just aren’t. The earliest we actually made it to the park was for our Akershus ADR at 9:40 and it was like pulling teeth to get us there. It just seems to take us forever to get out the door. I don’t know what’s wrong with us.
-I’ve read it over and over and I have always thought people were crazy to leave the parks in the afternoon for a rest but we just couldn’t handle the long days in the heat this time and there we were back at our hotel by four. We would go back later or sometimes swim so we actually spent MUCH less time in the parks than ever before. If somebody else told me this I’d feel like they wasted those precious park tickets but it comes down to survival and keeping your troops up and they loved the pool. What are you gonna do? Anyway, I guess I’m a convert to the afternoon rest break. I can’t believe it.
-AK-They should go ahead and change the name of AK to the Surface of the Sun, now featuring no air conditioning. This has ranked as our favorite park in the past but this time we spent the day being miserable and left without hitting some of our must dos. We rode the safari, touched the goats (and their poop! I’m still horrified by DD on that one!), met Safari Mickey and Rafiki, spent a dreadful lunch break fighting over the air conditioning at Restaurantosuarus, and called it quits. It was just too hot there. We broke down and bought a squirt bottle fan. Best $18 we spent at Disney according to DD.
-DHS-We only spent half a day at DHS. We met Minnie and Sorcerer Mickey with pretty much no wait right at 10:00. DD loved the Disney Jr show and LOVED the HISTK playground. She was going wild and I think I had about 15 heart attacks when she got out of our sight. It is a really fun area but a really hard place to keep up with your kids. She could disappear into a hole and come out somewhere totally different. Maybe she was a little young but she loved it. We saw Mr. Incredible and Frozone and DD blurted out that Mr. Incredible had big boobies. I was super embarrassed but the characters ran with this and it was actually hilarious.
-Epcot doesn’t leave me much to report EXCEPT that for the first time, we did the Disney Visa character meet and it was AWESOME. Probably our best meet all week. We didn’t have to wait and nobody came behind for a while so we had a pretty long time just to hang out with Mickey and Goofy. DD ran up to Mickey and just stood there hugging him for like 3 or 4 minutes, like she’d had a long day and needed some comfort from her best buddy. He was great about it. I cried. Goofy acted like he was left out and we just really had a special experience and got some great pics.
-MK- We spent three and a half days at MK and for that purpose FP+ worked really really well. I got to make 12 choices there before we went because I used four days and that was great. However, I changed more than half of them, very easily. We were hoping DD would be tall enough to ride 7DMT and she was a hair short. I went ahead and tried it because it was new to us and I was underwhelmed. BUT I think DD would have loved it so if she’d been with me, I think I’d have a totally different opinion. What else can I say about MK? It was hot. We were cranky. Many CMs seemed cranky. We rode IASW and the Barnstormer 10 times each. We had three terrible counter service lunches. My two year laughed and smiled and the whole place seemed magical. That’s the MK right?
-Posted wait times seemed wonky to me. Tinkerbell said five minutes so we went in and waited 30. IASW said 25 so we grabbed a FP+ and went right in with the standby line. I know this isn’t the end of the world but it does frustrate me. Disney has constructed a system that makes you schedule things way in advance but then sometimes seems to be thwarting those plans at every possible turn. The whole Tinkerbell line I was sweating bullets over our A&E fastpass. We would never have gotten into a 30 minute line. But try getting out of one when you’ve promised Tink to a two year old!
-FP+ mostly worked great for us. There were really only a couple things at AK and Epcot we wanted it for so we were fine and we didn’t use it at DHS. At MK we used our original three, often altered, plus maybe four or five more per day. We could usually schedule our next one either immediately or for however long it would take us to get to the attraction. BUT, the factors affecting this were 1. Low crowds 2. Only needing two, not a larger group, and 3. Our choices were not the big headliners. Several of them surprised me though. I got immediate ones for Ariel in her grotto, POC (several times), the Buzz ride, Pooh, etc. It totally blew me away that the Buzz Lightyear ride could have a 40 minute wait and I could walk across the way and get immediate FP+s and float right in. I don’t understand that but I’m definitely not complaining. It was actually super awesome. The only problem we really had was that the kiosks are pretty rare and sometimes oddly placed. And other people are the worst but I’ll address that later.
-MSEP/Wishes FP+-These also seem to be hotly debated so here’s our experience. MSEP was a disaster and a total waste. Wishes was awesome and totally worth it. When we got to MSEP at the beginning of the posted window it was full and the CMs don’t really have anything to say about it. Why give out more FP than they have spots for? I was pretty floored and upset. Thankfully, a nice family let our DD squeeze in beside them so she could see but really, they shouldn’t have had to. Yes we could have gotten there early, but that’s what the FP is for right? We followed the parade up the street to the Wishes FP spot and sat on the side in front of Casey’s. It was pretty full but we easily found a spot near the back. We were able to rest on the “grass” for a few minutes and then when everybody stood up, lean against the rail in the back and see everything. For me, SO MUCH better than fighting the crowds. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
Photopass/Memory Maker
-Meh, I’m torn on this one. We got memory maker for the first time because I knew we’d be seeing more characters than in the past. We intended to take a lot of those street shots but we often passed because they were in the hot sun and we were a sweaty mess. It was nice to watch the characters interact with DD and not worry about the camera but I wish the photographers had tried a little harder. We got a few really great shots and hundreds of not so great ones. Overall mostly a letdown but maybe our fault for not utilizing the outdoor shots or riding the rides with the pictures as much. I don’t know.
Other Guests
-I know, I know. Who am I to judge but seriously people, we can all do better. We all paid the money to be there. One thing I found really startling this time was that we seemed to be in the actual minority as English speakers. I don’t have a problem with this but I will say that almost every guest that we REALLY had a problem with was someone from a different country. They pushed us, cut line, didn’t follow right of ways, and were just oblivious and pushy. Of course, many people not speaking English also were very sweet, smiled at our little girl, and tried to muddle through some interesting conversations in line. But when they are rude, look out. Also, in our visit with Crush at Turtle Talk, most of the kids he called on couldn’t speak English so a lot of the show seemed lost in translation for all parties. It was just kind of odd. At Pop, we were DEFINITELY in the minority and some of the rude behaviors seemed even more pronounced. We saw some pretty shocking things. HOWEVER, my husband loves their swimwear choices. His eyeballs were popping out.
-I don’t have a problem with scooters. I am in no place to judge who needs one and I never would. BUT if you let your kid sit in your lap and drive and they almost run over my kid who was not darting in front of you or anything, I will big time judge you for being a bad guest.
-Okay, the FP+ kiosks. Seriously, I was more aggravated with other guests here than at any other time. People take FOREVER to do this. I could make our picks in under a minute every time but it was excruciating standing there while people debated what and when and asked the CMs there what every ride was and what the current wait was and was it worth it. I cannot even describe how unbelievable this was. What were they doing?!?
-Adults and characters-We visited Disney as adults only and weren’t into the characters back then but I would have defended to the death our right to them as equal to that of the kiddos. That said, it is so frustrating when you are waiting with your very patient but desperate two year who has to stand and watch these grown people take zillions of pictures, have long conversations, or play hide and seek with Rapunzel. DD never jumped the gun but I could feel her vibrating waiting to hug those princesses. In those moments, it was kind of tough. And I know that this in an unpopular opinion, but again, we all have a right to one.
Conclusion
If it hadn’t been so unexpectedly hot, this would probably have gone down as our best trip ever. DD’s age was really magical time to visit. But we definitely suffered and it colored everything else that we were doing. Next time we go, I’m looking at January.
If anybody is still reading, I hope some of our experiences will help somebody else make a decision about their own trip. I know these things help me when I’m trying to plan. If anybody has any questions about anything, I’d be glad to answer them! Thanks for reading!

Rapunzel's friends must have some good stories to tell.
