Some of my favorite posts to read on the Dis are the observations and experience posts of people just returned so I’m hoping my thoughts can help a few people out. Otherwise, these are just idle ramblings (emphasis on the rambling!) of a diehard but easily frustrated Disney fan. These are my observations and experiences from last week, May 9-16 and I realize that they may be exactly the opposite of what others may have experienced or thought. That’s okay! We all have the right to our own opinions!

Also, I considered calling this post the agony and the ecstasy but that seemed overly dramatic.

Background

-We are by no means experts but this was our fifth trip in about seven years in what I would call the modern era of WDW (basically not when I was a kid) and I’ve researched and planned each of those pretty extensively. Of those trips, three were all adult groups and one was when my DD was 18 months old, with grandparents in tow. So, anyway, not nearly as expert as many but not newbies and fairly well versed in most things Disney.

-Our travel group was just me (Mom-35), DH-36, and DD-one month shy of 3 years old.

-We drove to the World from Kentucky and stayed at Pop. In the past we’ve stayed at POR twice, OKW in a 2 bedroom villa once (sweet digs-I missed that!), and a tent at FW once (a looong story for another time).

-As similar reports from the week have mentioned, the crowds were pretty low but temperatures were very high. We really struggled with the heat all week. This was our third trip in May and we’ve never experienced that before. It really affected our touring and schedules (not to mention our attitudes and energy levels!) all week. I bow down to people who visit during the summer who are dealing with the high temps AND high crowds.

Hotel

-When I reserved our room at Pop, I requested a king bed and booked a standard room. I made no other requests because we really only wanted the king. I would have paid for it given the option. About two hours before we arrived, I got a text giving me my room number and it was in the 80s. I called to see if it was a king and it was not. They switched us to a king with a free upgrade to a preferred location in the 70s. This was pixie dust for us. On the phone, they told me this invalidated my online check in and we’d have to come to the front desk, which was fine but before we got there, I got another text with the new room number and we went straight to the room. Magic.

-I really wanted the king because it would be easier for our DD to sleep between us than have to deal with bed rails and it would free up a little space in the room. I was concerned about the small rooms with all the junk we take with us but I brought some storage solutions along and those were life savers. Our room was actually very comfortable and we didn’t miss the extra space of a POR room at all.

-We found most of the amenities of Pop to be all or more than we needed, and lots of fun to boot. My little one loved the pool and all the big statues. The only two complaints I had with Pop are covered in two other areas, beginning with…

Transportation

-Why in the name of all that is holy do they not have a roof over the bus waiting areas at Pop?!? We only rode the bus two times and had fairly unfortunate experiences both times. These were made 10 times worse by standing in the direct sun waiting for the bus to never come.

-I know this is hotly debated, but we find that it works best for us to drive to the parks. Now, my opinion is colored by the inclusion of a little one and giant stroller and large back pack that comes along with that. We used to be total bus devotees, leaving our car in the lot all week but after we tried driving to the parks once we never looked back. You may still have to take a tram (or at MK the tram and monorail) but at least you won’t be waiting forever with no bus in sight to stand next to a sweaty stranger juggling all the same crap you are. The trams seem to come one right after the other without the long waits of the bus, in our experience. Disney seems to have mastered the parking and tram procedure more efficiently than the bus schedule.

Dining

-For our pre kiddo trips, we loved the dining plan. It was like date night every night. Those days are gone and we skipped it this time. For us, it just works out much better and cheaper. We were able to share meals or eat snacks rather than feel like we had to stuff ourselves, then have dessert. I shopped the first day (worst WalMart ever) and got drinks, snacks, and breakfast for the room, which also makes a huge difference.

-The whole pizza, while not the best pizza ever, is probably the best deal going in the food courts. But, we ordered one with “beef” expecting ground beef and no joke, there was cut up hamburgers on it. We just picked them off but it was weird.

-The only two ADRs we had were a lunch at H&V for the Disney Jr. characters and a princess breakfast at Akershus. Obviously made with DD in mind. The food at H&V was much better than I expected based on the reviews it gets and breakfast at Akershus was quite good, although way overpriced. But like we all know, we’re not paying for the food and the characters were okay at H&V and great at Akershus. My DD was beside herself with the princesses so I’m sure I’d have paid more to see that. Character meals totally stress me out though. I’m always afraid we’ll get skipped or be gone when they come by or the kid in front of us will take too long and cut into our time. I know this is crazy but it wears me out!

-We visited Fort Wilderness one night for the campfire but it rained so we were able to do an immediate walk up at Trails End. This was our best meal of the whole trip and almost reasonably priced (unprecendented for Disney). Then we went to the barn and visited the horses. It was a really great peaceful night.

Technology-Magic Bands/MDE/Wifi

-Magic Bands worked perfectly 100% of the time. Honestly, I love them.

-MDE worked pretty quickly for us and mostly perfectly. Again, a fan.

-Wifi-I had more trouble in the hotel than the parks. DD wanted to facetime Grandaddy several times and it was like we had to stand on our heads with a finger pointing the right way to make that work.

Parks/FP+/Touring Schedule (anybody still out there?)

-A little additional background… we’ve had great times at Disney as adults only and have ridden EE as many as 10 times in a row. This was not that kind of trip. We came here to bring our two year old DD and for her to enjoy it so we were definitely in a different frame of mind.

-We are not RD people. I wish we were, especially in that kind of heat but it’s time for me to accept that we just aren’t. The earliest we actually made it to the park was for our Akershus ADR at 9:40 and it was like pulling teeth to get us there. It just seems to take us forever to get out the door. I don’t know what’s wrong with us.

-I’ve read it over and over and I have always thought people were crazy to leave the parks in the afternoon for a rest but we just couldn’t handle the long days in the heat this time and there we were back at our hotel by four. We would go back later or sometimes swim so we actually spent MUCH less time in the parks than ever before. If somebody else told me this I’d feel like they wasted those precious park tickets but it comes down to survival and keeping your troops up and they loved the pool. What are you gonna do? Anyway, I guess I’m a convert to the afternoon rest break. I can’t believe it.

-AK-They should go ahead and change the name of AK to the Surface of the Sun, now featuring no air conditioning. This has ranked as our favorite park in the past but this time we spent the day being miserable and left without hitting some of our must dos. We rode the safari, touched the goats (and their poop! I’m still horrified by DD on that one!), met Safari Mickey and Rafiki, spent a dreadful lunch break fighting over the air conditioning at Restaurantosuarus, and called it quits. It was just too hot there. We broke down and bought a squirt bottle fan. Best $18 we spent at Disney according to DD.

-DHS-We only spent half a day at DHS. We met Minnie and Sorcerer Mickey with pretty much no wait right at 10:00. DD loved the Disney Jr show and LOVED the HISTK playground. She was going wild and I think I had about 15 heart attacks when she got out of our sight. It is a really fun area but a really hard place to keep up with your kids. She could disappear into a hole and come out somewhere totally different. Maybe she was a little young but she loved it. We saw Mr. Incredible and Frozone and DD blurted out that Mr. Incredible had big boobies. I was super embarrassed but the characters ran with this and it was actually hilarious.

-Epcot doesn’t leave me much to report EXCEPT that for the first time, we did the Disney Visa character meet and it was AWESOME. Probably our best meet all week. We didn’t have to wait and nobody came behind for a while so we had a pretty long time just to hang out with Mickey and Goofy. DD ran up to Mickey and just stood there hugging him for like 3 or 4 minutes, like she’d had a long day and needed some comfort from her best buddy. He was great about it. I cried. Goofy acted like he was left out and we just really had a special experience and got some great pics.

-MK- We spent three and a half days at MK and for that purpose FP+ worked really really well. I got to make 12 choices there before we went because I used four days and that was great. However, I changed more than half of them, very easily. We were hoping DD would be tall enough to ride 7DMT and she was a hair short. I went ahead and tried it because it was new to us and I was underwhelmed. BUT I think DD would have loved it so if she’d been with me, I think I’d have a totally different opinion. What else can I say about MK? It was hot. We were cranky. Many CMs seemed cranky. We rode IASW and the Barnstormer 10 times each. We had three terrible counter service lunches. My two year laughed and smiled and the whole place seemed magical. That’s the MK right?

-Posted wait times seemed wonky to me. Tinkerbell said five minutes so we went in and waited 30. IASW said 25 so we grabbed a FP+ and went right in with the standby line. I know this isn’t the end of the world but it does frustrate me. Disney has constructed a system that makes you schedule things way in advance but then sometimes seems to be thwarting those plans at every possible turn. The whole Tinkerbell line I was sweating bullets over our A&E fastpass. We would never have gotten into a 30 minute line. But try getting out of one when you’ve promised Tink to a two year old!

-FP+ mostly worked great for us. There were really only a couple things at AK and Epcot we wanted it for so we were fine and we didn’t use it at DHS. At MK we used our original three, often altered, plus maybe four or five more per day. We could usually schedule our next one either immediately or for however long it would take us to get to the attraction. BUT, the factors affecting this were 1. Low crowds 2. Only needing two, not a larger group, and 3. Our choices were not the big headliners. Several of them surprised me though. I got immediate ones for Ariel in her grotto, POC (several times), the Buzz ride, Pooh, etc. It totally blew me away that the Buzz Lightyear ride could have a 40 minute wait and I could walk across the way and get immediate FP+s and float right in. I don’t understand that but I’m definitely not complaining. It was actually super awesome. The only problem we really had was that the kiosks are pretty rare and sometimes oddly placed. And other people are the worst but I’ll address that later.

-MSEP/Wishes FP+-These also seem to be hotly debated so here’s our experience. MSEP was a disaster and a total waste. Wishes was awesome and totally worth it. When we got to MSEP at the beginning of the posted window it was full and the CMs don’t really have anything to say about it. Why give out more FP than they have spots for? I was pretty floored and upset. Thankfully, a nice family let our DD squeeze in beside them so she could see but really, they shouldn’t have had to. Yes we could have gotten there early, but that’s what the FP is for right? We followed the parade up the street to the Wishes FP spot and sat on the side in front of Casey’s. It was pretty full but we easily found a spot near the back. We were able to rest on the “grass” for a few minutes and then when everybody stood up, lean against the rail in the back and see everything. For me, SO MUCH better than fighting the crowds. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Photopass/Memory Maker

-Meh, I’m torn on this one. We got memory maker for the first time because I knew we’d be seeing more characters than in the past. We intended to take a lot of those street shots but we often passed because they were in the hot sun and we were a sweaty mess. It was nice to watch the characters interact with DD and not worry about the camera but I wish the photographers had tried a little harder. We got a few really great shots and hundreds of not so great ones. Overall mostly a letdown but maybe our fault for not utilizing the outdoor shots or riding the rides with the pictures as much. I don’t know.

Other Guests

-I know, I know. Who am I to judge but seriously people, we can all do better. We all paid the money to be there. One thing I found really startling this time was that we seemed to be in the actual minority as English speakers. I don’t have a problem with this but I will say that almost every guest that we REALLY had a problem with was someone from a different country. They pushed us, cut line, didn’t follow right of ways, and were just oblivious and pushy. Of course, many people not speaking English also were very sweet, smiled at our little girl, and tried to muddle through some interesting conversations in line. But when they are rude, look out. Also, in our visit with Crush at Turtle Talk, most of the kids he called on couldn’t speak English so a lot of the show seemed lost in translation for all parties. It was just kind of odd. At Pop, we were DEFINITELY in the minority and some of the rude behaviors seemed even more pronounced. We saw some pretty shocking things. HOWEVER, my husband loves their swimwear choices. His eyeballs were popping out.

-I don’t have a problem with scooters. I am in no place to judge who needs one and I never would. BUT if you let your kid sit in your lap and drive and they almost run over my kid who was not darting in front of you or anything, I will big time judge you for being a bad guest.

-Okay, the FP+ kiosks. Seriously, I was more aggravated with other guests here than at any other time. People take FOREVER to do this. I could make our picks in under a minute every time but it was excruciating standing there while people debated what and when and asked the CMs there what every ride was and what the current wait was and was it worth it. I cannot even describe how unbelievable this was. What were they doing?!?

-Adults and characters-We visited Disney as adults only and weren’t into the characters back then but I would have defended to the death our right to them as equal to that of the kiddos. That said, it is so frustrating when you are waiting with your very patient but desperate two year who has to stand and watch these grown people take zillions of pictures, have long conversations, or play hide and seek with Rapunzel. DD never jumped the gun but I could feel her vibrating waiting to hug those princesses. In those moments, it was kind of tough. And I know that this in an unpopular opinion, but again, we all have a right to one.

Conclusion

If it hadn’t been so unexpectedly hot, this would probably have gone down as our best trip ever. DD’s age was really magical time to visit. But we definitely suffered and it colored everything else that we were doing. Next time we go, I’m looking at January.

If anybody is still reading, I hope some of our experiences will help somebody else make a decision about their own trip. I know these things help me when I’m trying to plan. If anybody has any questions about anything, I’d be glad to answer them! Thanks for reading!

I read all of it and enjoyed it. I also like reading about other people's observations and like you said, we are all entitled to our opinions. I'm hoping that my upcoming summer trip isn't tainted too badly by the weather, though I fear it may be. That afternoon break is sounding pretty nice- and will be a first for us also! We took DD at just over 2yo and it really was a magical visit! Now she is 9 and we are doing our first surprise trip!

Awesome report! I'm scared of the heat... I've been once in July so I'm hoping I can handle this weekend. I'm bringing my awesome paper fan so I'm hoping that helps.. I love those misting fans but they're just annoying to carry.

Thanks for taking the time to share! I read all the way through and appreciate your insight. This will be our first "hot" trip, as our others have been in winter months (well, one in April, but we only had highs in the low 80s a couple days). I'm trying to mentally prepare myself and my family for the heat and higher crowds.

We love MM, but we do lots of rides with photos. And in the past, I pretty much make my family stop whenever we see a photographer (except in the first hour or two after rope drop). Now I'm thinking I may not be as excited about having my pic taken if I'm a sweaty, frizzy mess, lol!

I loved reading positive comments about MBs/MDE/FP+ too. I know they're not always perfect, but it's encouraging to know they're not always terrible, either.

What a great trip report. You're much more of an expert than you give yourself credit for. Your plan was sound and focused on your daughter as it should have been...IMHO.....and it generally panned out.....except for........what did they say about the opening day at DisneyLand.....Walt could control everything but the weather  Sometimes stuff happens! We visited in May before and I agree it can be hot..........Sept can be the same. We're doing December in 2015 and Jan 2016 so I'll let ya know if its cooler :P

Your critique of POP was very enlightening..........we're doing AoA in December so I imagine we'll face a bunch of the same issues............BTW were looking for a King bed too........my wife kicks :D

Thanks again for a great report!

Doug :goofy:

Wonderful! I love these threads as well. I feel like I learn something new every time. Thanks!!

Just want to chime in. I loved reading your report. It doesn't matter if I agree with everything or not, I always learn something. (By the way, totally agree with scooter and adult with character comments.)

I enjoyed your report- Glad you had a good time. I totally agree with your comment about some of the scooters having my foot recently run over. We go every July and deal with the heat and crowds because it is the only time we can usually go for more than a few days. Last summer it poured everyday and was a longer lasting rain than the usual afternoon shower in Florida and the heat wasn't as bad because we were wet all the time. Am dreading this July heat as we go again. Thank you for your report.

I was with you all the way up until the adults and characters thing, for that, I just want to use your own words: we can all do better. Instead of harping on people who are doing what they have every right to, and paid for, perhaps use this opportunity to teach your kid patience. If it wasn't an adult in front of you, it would be a kid taking up just as much time.

Great write-up. Could not agree more with driving to the parks, the only park we'll take a bus to is MK, and that's only if we're going to be hopping to Epcot and can ride the monorail. Also Trails End, we did a last minute ADR last year and were very pleasantly surprised.

What were they doing?!?

Other people are definitely the worst. Especially when they get to the front of a FP kiosk line, pull out a park map, and then spend 10 minutes at the kiosk trying to figure out what ride they want to FP.

It totally blew me away that the Buzz Lightyear ride could have a 40 minute wait and I could walk across the way and get immediate FP+s and float right in. I don’t understand that but I’m definitely not complaining. It was actually super awesome.

This was awesome, when conditions were right one day, we got somewhere around 15 extra FPs at the kiosks, most of them with almost immediate return times to waltz right past hundreds of people in a standby line with 20+ minute wait. More time was spent waiting at the FP kiosks than in ride lines.

I'm sorry. I was trying to imply that I think adults DO have this right. I said that I always defended that and still do even though it wasn't my thing when we went without kids. That was actually in my post in the same paragraph as what you're complaining about. I just said it can be tough for a little one to watch and understand.

And trust me, my little one had plenty of chances to learn patience all over Disney and she handled it beautifully. Better than many of the adults we saw, and probably better than the adults that she was traveling with!

I really wasn't trying to start any debates or offend, just describe some of our experiences. That's why I mentioned more than once than these were only one person's opinions.

Really enjoyed your report. Pretty spot on. Your comments about the heat last week worry me a bit. We went this past March (late March) and had FABULOUS weather. Next year, due to DD starting middle school, we are going first week in June and I already have heat anxiety. We have always lived in the South and are familiar with heat, but we usually aren't park hopping in it!

I can't believe this is actually a thing. :scared1: Rapunzel's friends must have some good stories to tell.

Thanks for your report. I read every word. Always interested in other people's stories. IMO, your best move was just going with the flow of your DD. Sometimes that's not an easy thing to do.

Great report! I really enjoyed reading it. I don't think you were harping at all. All of the points you made were quite valid and very well written.

We will be taking our 1-week-shy-of-3 year old in July. You have given me some good points to consider. I am glad that Pop worked well for you. We are staying at AKL in July, but I am considering Pop in November. The non-covered bus stop worries me a bit, and the rude behavior you mentioned seeing. I really don't mind having fewer amenities at the values, but it might be worth paying for a moderate to avoid poor guest behavior. I know that rude guests can be anywhere at any resort, but in my one experience with a value (AoA), I definitely saw more rude behavior than I ever saw at the moderates or at AKL. That is really a shame.

Glad you and your family had a great trip. Now start planning the next one! :)

Your thoughts on the FP+ Kiosks are so true. My daughter was a FP+ CM with the roll out. She has many stories of guests yelling at her because the exact FP they wanted was not available or just because people didn't like the changes. She was a great resource to people who didn't have a good understanding of the parks or the system but it can really hold up the line. Great report. I enjoyed it very much. So glad your focused on your DD

Good read. I think the best "lesson" - for lack of better word - is that you once toured one way and now have to tour another way, giving you a different perspective. Sometimes at some point we all have to adjust our ways, whether our own situations change, the environment changes (increased crowds, weather) or the process offered by Disney changes. Sounds like you had a great trip overall.

We are here now during a normal time for us (last hurrah until fall cause summer is just too hot and crowded) and it is miserably hot. Hotter than last few years. I am melting and it's wearing me down. We were going to AK tomorrow but have decided not to go because of the heat and how bad it feels there. I think we'll just sleep in, hit the pool or head to some of the new I-Drive INDOOR attractions with A/C, and then go to DHS for our dinner reservations and Fantasmic.

Just to note if you are looking at January and considering a value - you may be in for a rude experience like no other. I used to do Jan/Feb and even had POP booked for this year ... but called and cancelled. Told them when they get the SA teen tour groups under control I'll be back but I was booking offsite this year. I did return to POP first week of March because they are back at school then. They made our trip miserable. We couldn't use pools, buses or food court let alone get to sleep before 1-2 am. Security was worthless. We counted 1000 at our resort as they loaded on buses for a costume party. While some moderates have been blessed with them, I think overall you would be okay there.

Your description of AK is right on!! We go in Sept and it can be miserable. They poorly planned their QS dining seeing most have outdoor seating. Stupid.
