Another (non DCL) guest overboard

My husband worked security at a university and a girl fell from the sixth floor window. Stories were she was sitting on the edge and acting stupid, but it turns out she was actually trying to look down to see if something was in her car and lost her balance. She survived, but was permanently disabled. What is sad is that if someone like that has been drinking, it's even sadder that they are wandering around the decks alone instead of with the family or friends they came with. They could even just fall on the ship and get a head injury, etc.

The worst drunken behavior we've witnessed was the story I told on another thread about the two women in St. Thomas who kept the ship waiting an hour and came staggering back arm in arm and thought the whole thing was funny.

Oh my re the girl that fell from the sixth floor window how frightful. Yes it is sad they were alone I agree.

That is awful the drunken women in St Thomas. We are always paranoid about gettimg back on time so we never venture far! I am disabled anyway so I allow more time. How do people let time get away with them! There is aleays a couple on every cruise! One year I am embrassed to say it was my parents. They got lost and my Mum was in tears. I told them to take an official cab in the port but they choose a cheap unoffical taxi....dumped them miles from the ship.

Yes, one of the women's husband had packed up their whole cabin and gotten off the ship because he was told the ship had to leave. Problem was they found out the other woman had a child in the nursery and no other family onboard so they couldn't leave. Talk about irresponsible!

I am speechless. A child in the nursery? Laughing and joking about it! Oh my. I was going to comment shame the ship did not go without them but after learning she had a child thank goodness it did not. The poor wee mite!

And their late return made us 90 minutes late to Castaway Cay the next day! Because their names and stateroom numbers kept getting announced, we found out they got plenty of notes under their doors with passenger grievances about their selfish behavior. Boy was the husband mad and the wife was laughing about how he had packed up their whole room -- bet the rest of that cruise was not fun in that stateroom. Yes, they had quite the viewing audience on the promenade deck LOL

They indeed could have sailed. DCL and I beleive most of the other lines have a policy if no one is there to watch and take care of the child, a qualified CM is a signed to the child until the parents catch up with the kids.

They may not have sailed becuase they found out where the Mother was and she was not to far off.

Don't ever count on the vessel always waiting.

Forgive me I got the wrong end of the stick. I thought she had been drinking I apologise. Not that it would have been less tragic of she had. An accident is an accicent. Thank goodness it is rare. My sisters friend her Dad died falling from a multistory car park. Like those ones at Disney Springs. Well the rumours for years was it sucicide, was he drunk.. No it was just an accident. Rare but it happens. The rumours did not help my sisters family so I should know better. I hang my head in shame. :-(
Don't feel bad. I work in a trauma center. Some accidents involve alcohol and drugs, and some don't. I don't think it's wrong to question if alcohol was involved when something happens on a cruise ship. A cruise ship is one big bar or at least there are bars everywhere. You don't even have to be drunk... just a few drinks can make you lose your inhibitions, and do stuff you normally may not do. We will probably never no why she fell, and at this point it really doesn't matter.

Thank you for your kind reply. You are so right it doesn't really matter just awful she did.

In St. Thomas you don't have to venture far. Señor Frog's is right across the pier from the ships. We watched most Disney people walk right by it the one time we were moored close to it (usually we've been all the way at the front of the pier), but once the Carnival ship came in a couple of hours later, the place started rocking, with people dancing on the bar and conga lines weaving their way around the room.

I'm willing to bet the women forgot to set their watches correctly like the notes on your bed at night tell you to do. There's really no excuse, though.

Those who drink should not get so offended that others believe that alcohol may have played a part in a tragedy like this. No one is making a judgement on you because you choose to drink alcohol. The judgement is on alcohol and the part it sometimes plays in incidents like this. I know lots of people that drink responsibly as well as others that do not. In the end if a person uses good judgement while sober, they usually do the same while drinking. The reverse is true as well.

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not offended that some may think alcohol played a part in this tragedy, it's a natural and logical assumption and it has definitely crossed my mind too. I don't think those assumptions are a reflection or judgement of anyone who chooses to drink alcohol. I just think anyone who has conclusively determined that this woman went overboard because she was drunk should perhaps take a step back and wait for the FBI to finish their investigation. We can speculate all day long but the truth is, even if she was drinking, none of us know for sure if it played a part in what happened or if she would have gone overboard without it. Hopefully the investigation will yield some answers for this woman's family so they don't need to spend the rest of their days wondering what happened.
