Another (non DCL) guest overboard

I'm guessing it was intentional suicide. Why was she alone at 2am sitting on a balcony railing? Did she drink too much and then said "to hell with it" and let herself fall off? Did she tell her friends earlier that night that she would be "sleeping in" so they wouldn't look for her? I've traveled with groups many times, and we always met for breakfast or would be in touch to plan our day.
Just speculation of course, but very sad for those she left behind, and sad for her if she was going through depression and thought this was her only way out.

I hope that's not the case for her family's sake. Didn't the article say she has four children? :sad2:

We picked up books and movies about cruise ships from the library including this one. Monk on a cruise. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Monk_Gets_on_Board

I collect Monk paperbacks and love the stories - the writing is spot on to the show. This particular book was one of my favorites -- together with the one where he went on the road in an RV. Wonderful reading. Tony Shalhoub has a new show this summer called "Brain Dead". I'm only watching it to see him! He was also terrific on "Blacklist". Sorry -- off topic.

She could have been sitting there for any number of reasons. It will probably never be known. Maybe she was taking a selfie, maybe she just wanted to see what it felt like to sit on the railing, maybe she wanted the wind in her hair. There is just no way to know what was going through her mind and what led her to get up there.

I didn't care for,it. Very dry. But my daughter liked it. I'm not a Monk fan though.

I believe I read this was a "girls trip"

pay for a single cabin is possible but unlikely

roomie was 'asleep' and did not notice until noon . . . there are many possible story lines to this idea ....

+++++

jumping back .. someone mentioned that DCL ships has a 'man overboard detection system'

first I've heard of this ... I'm curious .... would the person care to expand?

I mean, I worked "the industry" for over 30 years and I'm not aware of a viable system .... altho "we" tried a few offerings while I was still active.

That was me. It seems the info sheet has been removed form disneycruiselineblog.com but here is a link to the same information from cruiselawnews.com http://www.cruiselawnews.com/2015/06/articles/disappearances-1/disneys-man-overboard-system/ There use to be a youtube video of them testing the system. Looks like they aren't fool proof and some crews may ignore them all together since false alarms sound like they are common but the jist of it is that something breaks the barrier then the crew is alerted so they can review the footage to determine if it was a true MOB or just a false alarm. Looks like Disney has it on all ships and maintains it where Carnival has it on some ships.

Good to know, thanks. Also I suppose her roommate could have been hungover and slept in until noon or so. Sad all around.

Absolutely.

And having been on a few "girl's trips" in my life, you give people space. If someone's not at breakfast, they are probably sleeping. Not at lunch, poor hungover buddy. I'm impressed they realized it by noon.

And as the "girls" get older you're less in each other's business. Last trip I went on the organizer decided to cheat on her husband, and there were only two of the ten of us who seems to care (the ones who knew them during their courtship and who were bridesmaids). My cheating friend wouldn't discuss it at all. Her life.

So even if this woman had a roomie who knew she wasn't there that night...the roomie might just have been a hand's off, it's your life, friend. (In the situation I was in, the 8 friends who let her live her life are still close to her. The ones that tried to talk to her are not, 60% her choice)

One thing is for sure too much drinking and a cruise ship do not mix well!

Also the movie Titantic did much damage I wonder how many people when they have a few drinks too many in them decide to reinact that moment they are the king of the world!

Plenty of people drink and it almost never ends like this.

Not all ships have a spot for that anymore, and that moment involves facing forward. This woman was sitting backwards. Not a re-enactment at all.

That's some drama right there - how did you guys know she cheated if she didn't tell you?

Wow, that's a heck of a conclusion. No where was it mentioned that she was drunk. I've taken 16 cruises and not on any of them did we see over the top drunken behavior, or lose someone because they were drunk! If anything, drinking and driving don't mix.

Except that it is very dangerous. People don't climb on hotel balconies to feel the wind in their hair. They don't climb on the railing at a zoo to get a better view of the lions. Unless (sorry to be blunt. A) they have a death wish, B) they are that stupid, or C) they are really drunk- and even then I think you'd have to have a death wish. Everyone knows what's on the other side of that balcony.

Waking up with a hangover in a tropical storm on a rocking ship is a very bad feeling. I learned my lesson the first cruise. Other than exacerbating motion sickness drinking on a ship is no worse than anywhere else. I have never seen over the top drunkeness either, but Ive only cruised DCL.

I have seen over the top drunkenness on 3 of the 7 Disney cruises on and a lot more on the 1 Carnival cruise I was on. :)
This past January cruise I was on there was a very badly behaved drunk who berated the staff at Cove because they dared to question his young daughters and request ID when they wanted to order drinks... they were already pretty inebriated. He raised enough of a fuss to draw security to the scene and eventually left to sleep it off (I guess) with the verbage of them being Effin Monkeys who were losers and that he had paid ALOT of money to be on the ship.
Then in St Thomas as they were calling for final boarding, a few drunks Frankenstien walked up the gangway with the assistance of a female officer. That was actually amusing though.

Carnival was definitely more wild, but still just more of happy drunks. Nothing harmful horrible.

Alcohol effects everyone differently. You have the happy drunks, angry drunks, sad drunks, sleepy drunks. Thinking back I guess I have seen some pretty drunk people on DCL, but thankfully no bad behavior, no fighting or anything. I think most people traveling with their kids try to maintain self control. Of course there's always the exception. We plan on trying Carnival soon so hopefully the ship is full of "happy" people.

Forgive me I got the wrong end of the stick. I thought she had been drinking I apologise. Not that it would have been less tragic of she had. An accident is an accicent. Thank goodness it is rare. My sisters friend her Dad died falling from a multistory car park. Like those ones at Disney Springs. Well the rumours for years was it sucicide, was he drunk.. No it was just an accident. Rare but it happens. The rumours did not help my sisters family so I should know better. I hang my head in shame. :-(

Actually, unfortunately, there have been several stories over the years about people climbing on railings at zoos to get a better picture or be in a picture and falling into the pit -- bear and lion both. Even children have done it. I don't think it requires a death wish -- just no common sense!

My husband worked security at a university and a girl fell from the sixth floor window. Stories were she was sitting on the edge and acting stupid, but it turns out she was actually trying to look down to see if something was in her car and lost her balance. She survived, but was permanently disabled. What is sad is that if someone like that has been drinking, it's even sadder that they are wandering around the decks alone instead of with the family or friends they came with. They could even just fall on the ship and get a head injury, etc.

The worst drunken behavior we've witnessed was the story I told on another thread about the two women in St. Thomas who kept the ship waiting an hour and came staggering back arm in arm and thought the whole thing was funny.
