Another (non DCL) guest overboard

So sad!! I saw that it was a girls trip, and when you factor in 2am falling overboard, I'm sure alcohol played a part. I hope she is found though! I remember a story in recent years about an intoxicated man who fell overboard, and was found the next day.

I assure you people can get just as drunk on "pay as you go" as they do on "all you can drink".
Im sure you can, but when you can get 15 drinks for 50.00 dollars its a little more tempting....plus some people feel they need to get their moneys worth out of the packages. Its the same reason people gain 10 lbs on a one week cruise. Would people eat as much if they had to pay oop for every snack. Im not anti drinking...I drink, but I do understand peoples mind set changes when their not reaching into their pocket everytime they want to eat or drink something. Wether this leads to more alcohol related incidents I dont know, but I have my suspicions.

I wonder if she even drank?

It is a very sad story, but I tend to agree a little with @Ofinn.

This is going off topic, but I just cruised a few weeks ago with RCCL with MIL & SIL. The amount of drunks was just ridiculous and RCCL was doing some serious pushing of the drink packages. I've always enjoyed my RCCL cruises, but this trip was awful and I don't see myself returning to RCCL in the near future. There is no reason for adults to be so drunk they are puking on the pool decks, hallways and stairwells. Security was always carting someone off to their rooms who was too drunk to even stand. One day a woman was so drunk at 2pm she removed her clothing at the pool and was shaking her goods. I'm not against drinking. I brought wine onboard and bought a couple mixed drinks. Yes, you can get seriously drunk without a drink package, but mixed drinks started at $10 plus auto 18% gratuity on RCCL and only went up from there. Heck, the bar inside the buffet was open at breakfast and always had a good sized crowd over there.

Doesn't matter. There are those who would judge even a teetotaler if anything happened to them without even knowing them.
My statement was a generalization. I wasnt implying that the recent jumper drank. I have just noticed a lot of these stories lately. Whos being judgemental?

I have no idea.

:ssst: Don't tell my DH women were removing their clothing at the pool or he's going to want to book a RCI cruise.

Hey. I never named any names. If you want to take it that way, well...

Very sad story, I read she was a mother of 4 kids. I can't imagine what the family is going through right now.

Odd cruise you were on.

We were on Royal the week before Easter (the employees were calling it THE Spring Break cruise), and we saw absolutely nothing like that.

It was bad. It was a 5 night on the Independence so maybe that was the problem??? I figured it would be okay since it sailed 4/18 which is usually past the spring break party crowds.

ETA: I have sailed on Royal a lot and have never experienced this before.

I wish the article had details on where this woman was when she fell. With the video, they must have some idea of whether she was somewhere she shouldn't be. I say this not to disparage the poor woman, but because an unexplained overboard is frightening.

In normal conditions, there's really only three things that can cause someone to "fall overboard"; homicide, suicide or dangerous/reckless behavior. Alcohol or drugs can increase chances of any of these unfortunate incidents but it's not required. Suicide, homicide and avoidable deaths happen on dry land daily without alcohol or drugs being a contributing factor.

I agree these stories can be scary, especially for people who have not cruised before. Even if they don't release what happened to this particular woman, it would be nice if they would include facts about how impossible it is to simply "fall off" a ship without intent or extreme recklessness.

I completely agree with you. You can't just fall off a cruise ship. These news stories should report the circumstances surrounding how the person went overboard. Otherwise it fuels the fears of those who do not know what a cruise ship is like.
