Another New York City thread, I need some help!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have been reading all your posts and have made a list of things to do if we have enough time.

Two more questions. NBC studio tours. Reviews are just ok. Does it worth the price of $93?
How about Rockefeller center tours? Can we just walk around and see the center without a guided tour?

Restaurant search is going well. I also have a list of places we are interested in to see. I found a name of shuttle service from Yelp, Quick Ride Car. They have great reviews, but no website. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

We enjoyed the NBC tour. I think there is a AAA discount. We walked around Rockefeller Center on our own. You may want to avoid being there on a Friday, as the Today Show has its concert series and it will be BUSY! (I didn't check the calendar for your dates, so not sure what day of the week you will be in the area.)

Thanks for this website. I put in our information and it recommends a minivan for $50. Is that the total price or it doesn't include the taxes, tolls, and etc?
Thanks

I think we got a quote of $30 for a sedan, and there was a way to add tip. We didn't have to pay a toll, or maybe it was included?

In my experience with any car service in NYC if you go through a toll you have to pay it at the end and it isn't apart of the quoted offer.

We've also used Carmel a couple times and worked well for price. They have coupons available, too.

This thread has been great! I am hoping to take DS8 on a quick overnight mother/son trip this summer. He loves the Museum of Natural History (the company I work for has a Corporate Membership so we get in free to several NYC attractions) and has been bugging to go back. I am thinking maybe a Broadway show for him as well (Spiderman, Lion King, or Matilda).

Anyway, I cannot add much to what has already been covered except to say stay away from the chain restaurants in Times Square like Olive Garden, Chili's etc. Prices are extremely inflated. Most of Times Square is like that.

My kids really enjoy Mars 2112 which is a theme restaurant in the Theater District. You ride a simulator to "Mars' and there are Aliens dancing in the restaurant. Pretty cute and prices are decent compared to Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock.

I am actually thinking of taking DS to the Ninja restaurant when we go. Can anyone tell me if that is worth it?

it?

I agree!! Please don't waste a NYC dining experience on any chain you can find all over! There are SO many great restaurants in Manhattan! We've listed a bunch here, and you can always ask the hotel concierge for recommendations.

i remember being in San Antonio and asking about "real BBQ ". This tuxedo dressed proper gentleman concierge ( we were staying at a swanky hotel) directed us to this DIVE. It was the BEST BBQ we ever ate, and still laugh at the great atmosphere ! It was such a dive but the food and people were amazing! When we saw the concierge again he winked at me and said "what did I tell you?!" Lol

Mara 2112 closed last year I'm pretty sure.

Thank you all again. I saw Travel With Kids show New York City on Roku and they went to Mars 2112. I thought it was interesting, but it reminded me of Rain Forest Cafe. Their website says that they are no longer in business.

These are the places I have found so far. They are all reasonably priced with good food. If you know any of them and liked/hated them, please let me know. Thanks

Fresco by Scott is excellent!

One thing to note is, before you go in a restaurant, check their Dept of Health rating. It should be posted right near the door --- a large blue letter grade. Anything below an "A", I would steer clear of. A "B" is okay, but sometimes they're actually a "C" and fight with the DOH and get a "B", that's why I say to stick to the "A" restaurants.

Thanks NYCDiane. That's very interesting. I have never seen a Dept of Health Rating before! It must be a NYC thing. I will definitely check for that.

I'm sorry to hear that. It has been a few years since we were last there but DS and my DD's loved it. The first time we went I had a great Chicken Wellington but the last time I felt like the food was just so so. But still, it was a fun experience for the kids.

I have really enjoyed reading these posts as we, too, are planning a NYC trip. We will be there for a few days in mid-July as part of a vacation to the east coast.

One place we have on our dining list is S'MAC. There are a couple of locations, one in the East Village and one in Murray Hill. Check out their website www.smacnyc.com. Definitely nothing fancy, but it looks simple and fun and certainly kid-friendly. :) I remember seeing them on one of the shows on the food channel a while back.

Have a great time and please come back and tell us how it all went! :goodvibes

Smac is amazing! I eat there all the time. I'm pretty close to the Murray Hill one so t least once a month I eat there.

Trattoria Dopo teatro is on 44th. Pretty good. expensive than Bond45 but we love Bond45 more.

Juniors is like a diner. Desserts are great. Never ate dinner or lunch. Only cake.

Carmine's is such a tourist trap. Food is decent but very overrated in my Italian opinion. Lol. ;-)

Yes, everyone has been wonderful with their helpful posts on this thread. I will definitely come back and let you all know about our trip.

Thanks for the recommendation. I added S'MAC to my list. I think our hotel is in Murray Hill area, but I am not sure. I have to check.

I still have to plan our Washington DC and Philadelphia part of our trip. Too much to do and DD12 just came back home from camp with a bad cold. We all are keeping away from her so that we don't get sick before our trip.

Thanks SingingMom, you have been very helpful.
I added Bond45 to the list. I also added Ellen's Stardust. Someone mentioned it on a post and I forgot to add it. I have heard about Carmine's being a tourist trap. I am just making a list and check them online, so that if we are close to any of these restaurants, I will recognize them.

Just a quick note - if you decide to buy your theater tickets at TKTS - they only take cash - no credit cards.

Juniors is great! I've eaten at the original in Brooklyn and at the one in Times Square.

Also a tip to remember - the east-west blocks are much longer than the north-south blocks, so if you are walking north or south don't get too upset about a 20 block walk, it really doesn't take all that long. If I'm in the Times Square area, I rarely take a subway, unless I'm going down to the Village.

A pp had mentioned the clothing store down by the 911 Center - it is Century 21. Your dd's may like it and you can find bargains there. Its not my favorite place to shop, but my dd likes it.

Some suggestions for Philly - Independence Hall, the mint (but they are not open for tours on Saturday or Sunday), and the Franklin Museum. Haven't been there in years, though.

Wow! Good to know. I have heard TKTS will be very busy during the Holiday week, so we are planning to buy tickets before leaving.

We have already bought tickets for Independence Hall online. They were free, but we had to pay a fee for buying them online. We have seen the Denver Mint. I have the Franklin Museum on my list, but haven't checked it online yet. Thanks for these suggestions.
