DS2 and I enjoyed a brief trip to WDW last week. We stayed at SSR from the 25th to the 30th. I had waitlisted at our homes of BCV and AKV but neither came through. I figured that's what I got for booking a few months out.

I was so pleasantly surprised with SSR. We checked in at 11am and the CM asked if there was any area we'd particularly like. I explained it was our first stay there and we were open. As she explained the ares, I told her the Grandstand sounded great but our first priority was a room as soon as possible even though we were obviously well short of 4pm checkin time. She found a 1 BR that was available right then!:yay: What a great start!

It turned out that our villa looked straight out on a parking lot but no complaints as we were able to settle in right away. And a very nice unexpected bonus was that we could see both Illumination and Wishes from the room....upper fireworks only of course.

The room appeared very clean but we were missing 2 washcloths and a bath mat, a battery for a remote (wouldn't expect the mousekeeper to check that but grrr to whichever previous guest took it!!!!) and as I didn't discover until that night, the blanket and one sheet for the pullout. It took two calls about the battery but everything else was brought very quickly. I think they just didn't catch the request for a battery the first time. The sofa bed wasn't made up which was unlike all our BCV experiences but after making the bed the next morning, we discovered why. I think it is impossible to fold up that sofa and keep the sheets on properly. It is also impossibly heavy. Oh, and for the first time ever, there were some clean dishes in the dishwasher. But if putting away a few dishes is the price for getting into a unit that early, I'd empty the dishwasher every trip!:goodvibes

Anyway, we loved SSR. The CMs were very friendly, the room decor is lovely, the landscaping is beautiful and most guests were quite friendly. After our home resort of BCV, this one is very bustling but it also has sort of a community spirit that I never notice at BCV.

I do question the often stated advantage of parking right by your units. That is true at OKW but unless our building was an anomaly, it sure doesn't appear to be true at SSR. You can park near your building, yes, but it is still a bit of a walk to the elevator and then to your villa. It seemed no closer than most of our BCV villas have been to the lot there.:confused3

We had dinner twice at the Turf Club and breakfast four times at AP.

Loved the Grandstand pool. Loved the spa smell as you enter the lobby. Loved the Christmas decor and especially the Christmas soundtrack playing in the background. Beautiful traditional carols that are not as commonly played as many.

I was looking forward to being back at WDW for the Christmas festivities but frankly not to staying at SSR. I am so glad to report how pleasantly surprised I was.

Thanks for the positive report- it's always nice when somone admits the actual visit was better than they had anticipated. So many times people only report the negatives and hearing the good things is just as if not more important. SSR seems to be really overcoming all the negativity of the past. It is one of my three homes (also have OKW and BCV) and I too was very pleasantly suprised the first time we stayed there.

Glad you had a good trip.

Glad to hear you enjoyed SSR. My daughter and I stayed there for the first time in May and we really liked it as well.

it also has sort of a community spirit

y'know, besides the obviously elegant decor & beautiful landscaping of SSR, i couldn't quite put my finger on what i loved about the resort.......that's it: community spirit!! :thumbsup2
it feels like you're in a small town, where quiet walks are standard, & no one is a stranger
ty for the trip report (& defining that elusive feeling lol) ~ glad you had a great time!!! :)

We're SSR owners and I have noticed that "community feel" also. We've met a lot of nice people waiting for the bus or riding on the bus. I had requested for Thanksgiving Congress Park and close to the quiet pool, room wasn't ready when we checked in but I got exactly what I asked for plus a nice view of DTD(dropped off the bags and head over to AK, called about 4pm and was given room number). We had dead battery problems too, plus the main light in the master bath was burned out. Call to maint. took care of them while we were at dinner at AP.

Happy to hear you enjoyed your stay!!
I leave in 1 week, so excited as this is our first trip home....and first time enjoying WDW at Christmas!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay so much. I'm interested in the Community Spirit comments, as that's one thing that I've noticed lacking in many of our DVC stays. People don't smile and say hello at DVC resorts as much as I had expected they would. After 4 years, I'm used to it, but when we stay at SSR again, and we will someday I'm sure, I look forward to experiencing what you did! Our only SSR stay was a single night, and we were wrapped up in our own preparations for our first GG! I wasn't very community oriented that trip, I was a bit frazzled the way one is just before a big party!

Bobbi:goodvibes

Glad to hear you had such a nice visit! We'll be there from 12/16-12/21 and we can't wait to go back. We stayed there in May and had a lovely visit, and we stayed twice last fall. I have also found the guests to be very friendly, but then I'm one of those annoying people who strikes up conversations with total strangers at bus stops, line queues and anywhere else I see fellow Disney travelers. ;)

Perhaps we have talked! as I too will start conversations at the drop of the hat. Had a really good one with some fellow DVC'ers on the way to MK Monday before Thanksgiving. Found out DH & I are not the only ones geeked about CRV! Also found out that they were BWV owners and they thought BWV needed some TLC(carpets, etc, the usual stuff we hear on the board.)

Thanks for the honest review......

I also was very pleasantly surprised how much I liked SSR after reading
some bad reviews.....

Everyone should form their own opinion and not rely solely on others
reviews;)

I so agree! I think that you cant really have an opinion on something unless you experience for yourself...and just like everyone has their own opinion, they will have their own experience!

But I do like reading all the reviews!!

Great Report!

That is exactly why I prefer SSR over the others. SSR feels most like a Country Club environment to me. Where everyone is having a good time, everyone speaks, the CMs know your name, the grounds are gorgeous and inviting and there are plenty of recreational activities.

We love all our other homes because they are at WDW. If they picked SSR up and put it somewhere else, I would still visit, I cant say that about the others. My family really loved it when we stayed in June. Our group was 10 months to about 55 yrs.

No matter where we stay, we always make sure we spend a week at SSR just to unwind at the end. This year AKV and then SSR.

And NYE is so much fun there! It is like we stepped back in time. Everyone dances and talks at the Party and then we watch the fireworks and know that we will see each other next year:cloud9:

I'm glad so many of you have noticed that spirit as well.

Bobbi, I know what you mean. Before we joined BCV, almost all of our stays had been at the Polynesian which we've always found to be a very friendly resort. We loved BCV from our first stay but never thought it was a very friendly place. That slowly seems to be changing though. And of course, it is so much smaller that it is much quieter anyway.

I thought of a couple other things I liked. The energy saving lights in the bathroom and foyer make such a soft glow initially but then brighten if you keep them on. So pretty. I imagine those lights will eventually be in all the villas though.

I also thought the second switch for the foyer was in a much better spot than at BCV. Probably the only person in the world who cares about that though.:rotfl:

And I liked the design of the cabinet under the kitchen sink. At BCV, one side has an extraneous lip so you can't open the other side without opening the first. Annoying! I also like that one of the trash can is labeled for recycling. At BCV, we tend to get them mixed up.:confused3

One thing I missed was having a second balcony (or a full length one) in a one BR.

Well, anyway, those of you who own at SSR have a lovely home.

I am glad you had such a nice time. We usually stay at BWV, our home resort, but are staying at SSR for the first time over Easter. There will be 10 of us in a GV, and reports like yours make me even more excited for the trip to come!

That's how we felt this summer as we toured all the DVCs before deciding to buy. Because it was just the two of us, we didn't commando the parks, usually stopped at a DVC for lunch or dinner, wandered the grounds, and checked out the pool area/food service. We felt at home when we were at SSR and we are die hard Poly fans. Felt so at home that we ended up making it our home resort.
