ok I read some of y'all said that the SanDisk mp3 is good if your not going Ipod...I'm thinking dd is not ready to take care of a nano yet - so I'm now trying to decide between others, the sandisk, sony and a shuffle

my really dumb question is where do you buy the music from if its not an ipod? Do they sell cards that you can buy like they do with the ipods?

I guess one other way to narrow this down - which MP3 should I NOT buy?

my dd's best friend is getting the touch for Christmas:scared1: (she's 11!) I so can't keep up with that!

We just want a user friendly version that plays lots without a subscription service or anything

she hasn't done the best keeping up with her DS & games - find it on the floor - though she does blame it on here sisters who share it -
She has done fine with her cellphone -but she's only had the a couple of months - I just think its a lot of money if she doesnt take care of it - ya know?

and the shuffle is sooo tiny

I personally have been using a Sansa MP3 player for years because I don't care a thing about having an iPod. I just want to plug it in and play it, you know? Have about 1,500 songs on an 8G...not full yet, but close.

What is GREAT about the Sansa is that you just drag and drop MP3 files onto it. No need whatsoever for special software (if you get software with it, don't even bother installing it). No iTunes, etc.

Wherever you can get your hands on music, it can be used....CDs, burned CDs, Amazon or Walmart - I've used those. My favorite has been Amazon. The only thing you can't use is iTunes (different file format).

Of the non-iPod brands of MP3 player, Sansa has the most accessories. You may not think this is a big deal, but it's pretty nice. I have an armband and even a docking station for mine. You typically only ever see docking stations for iPods.

i refuse to buy an iPod for various reasons. i have a Creative Zen Stone Plus and LOVE it. DD has a Philips Go-Gear Vibe and it is awesome too. we get music usually from wal-mart.com for .99. you can also get almost any song at amazon.com for .99-1.29.

AHH I didn't know about buying music from WM.com or amazon - this is all so new - can you tell? I knew I can rip from CD's but I'm not wanting to buy CD's any more

You can also borrow CDs from the library and then....take it from there :rolleyes1

Me too. I'm not part of the cult following of needing a highly overpriced gadget that is overpriced simply because the Apple corporation puts it out. (Although I wouldn't having their stocks. That cult following seems to be really good for boosting their stock price. ;)) I prefer cheap, simple, gets the job done adequate for what the item required for. Remember electronic items become obsolete within 6 months of being on the market and the price gets drastically slashed. Why overspend unnecessarily in the first place? I prefer saving my money for other things.

I've had a Sansa for years. It has a removable SD card, so I do NOT have to have every song I own stored on my MP3 player. I recently got a new one from Walmart that was about $15. It is the size of a pack of gum! It will be great for when I'm working out. :yay:

I'm about to be sucked in though - we'd pretty much narrowed it down to sony or san disk & then Walmart puts out the ad that will have a $50 itunes gc with purchase of ipod - so that brings it down from $145 to $95! In that case that's not bad, considering if we were gonna pay $89 for the 16g of Sony - then that's pretty comparable - ya know?
