Another Item Has Changed to Chicken

My family will really be disappointed in this new change. First, the pork shank at Gaston's, then the BOG change and now this. Sigh....

I think it is good for this sort of thing to happen at buffets, since at least two major world religions forbid eating pork, and it is easy for kids to grab something from the buffet without looking too carefully if it looks like chicken. I am less impressed with it at restaurants where you order your food, since there is more control over what is chosen to be eaten.
I disagree with this. It's the parent's responsibility to keep an eye on their kids and what they eat...not the restaurant's. And it's the parent's responsibility to check out any food items if they or a family member has a medical/health/religious reason to avoid certain foods or some restaurants entirely.

I am gluten free and have to check restaurants and food offerings to see what is safe for me to eat every time I eat out. There are tens of thousands of people in the parks every day, how is it Disney's responsibility to cater to each individual's dietary needs or choice/preference? They will help you find appropriate foods and offer substitutions, but they won't cater to one individual dietary restriction, like mine, or a choice/preference for other religions.

I would think that families trying to avoid pork products might not pick a German restaurant as their first choice in dining. Various sausages- both hot and cold, schnitzel, bacon, sauerbraten (sometimes made with pork), roast pork carving station..its a very pork heavy buffet, IMO.
I would argue that the number of visitors to Biergarten who can and do eat pork is likely greater than the number of people who visit Biergarten and do not or cannot eat pork, so I don't think this is a valid point. People who dine at Biergarten are doing so because they want German food which is known to be meat-heavy. Pork is a staple of the cuisine, even if the schnitzel is sometimes made with other meats.

I think the issue is less about people's tastes and cultural requirements, and more about cost - buying more chicken in bulk rather than pork will save $$. They gotta pay for SWGE somehow!

China is expecting to lose 200 million pigs to African Swine Fever this year. From The Guardian:

"The implications of the outbreak are already being felt beyond Asia. Global pork prices have risen by almost 40%, and long term it is likely to lead to more pork imports from Europe and America to meet demand, which will also push up global meat prices. Market analyst Rabobank said global pork supplies could fall by 8%."

I think this might be the reason that Disney is to trying to replace pork products.

Disney has been going *away* from making things easier on those of us with more limited diets, so I highly doubt it has to do with making it easier on those who avoid eating pigs.

Anyone who is that serious is going to be with their kids too-young-to-read-or-ask, or might even be eating special-ordered meals.

(Says the person who was served chicken instead of fake-chicken the other day at a popular restaurant...ugh...had about four bites until I realized it felt all wrong)

pork shank at Gaston's

Best piece of meat outside of the signature restaurants. That one they didn't even get replaced.

Disney has been going *away* from making things easier on those of us with more limited diets,

I want to ask how? From everything I heard Disney is always bending over backwards. Is it just menu items or when you talk to the wait staff do they refuse or limit your options from the past?

When I was in Germany and Austria all the restaurants I went to had schnitzel made from either chicken or veal, I didn't even realize pork was an option until right now. I had it a few times and always got the chicken option.

Well darn. I’m also interested in how they are going away from dietary accommodations. My daughter does have food allergies and yes we are super careful at buffets and never let her get her own plate of food. But also she’s 5 so I wouldn’t let her anyway lol.

And as a person with German heritage who has Biergarten on our trip plan for the first time (it finally works in our schedule!) I am super disappointed that they are serving “chicken schnitzel”!

We go to WDW once or twice a year and I haven't noticed any negative difference in how they handle food allergies. They're always really good with making me aware of my choices, preparing something off the menu if needed, and separate food handling. The only difference I've seen within the past two years is....oddly enough... at Biergarten. The seating host/hostess now gives you a pamphlet with your options on the buffet that are gluten free where a chef used to automatically come out and take you around. They still offer the availability to speak to the chef if you want it, but I'm so used to eat at Biergarten that I decline.

If anything....I was super excited in May at Ohana when I found out that now BOTH sauces are now made gluten free! It was the first time I've been able to try them. And we usually go for Flower & Garden and Food & Wine (going in Sept., YAY!) and I have been impressed with the gluten free labeling on the food booth dishes. Of course I wish there were more naturally gluten free options at the festivals....but that's because I want to try everything. LOL!

Festivals have to be hard on the booth as there are so many variations in nutritional requirements. So far we haven't found allergies in our house and hopefully never have to deal with it.

It would be cool if they had like a central nutrional restrictions booth that had a rotating schedule of food items they made "friendly". So like Monday it would be Dairy Free for France, Gluten Free for Germany, Ect....

Possible it's just a supply issue and temporary.
Possible.

I remember about 5 years ago, Chipotle on the East Coast, stopped serving the carnitas meat due to pork sourcing. Apparently Chipotle uses "humane" sourced pork and they discovered that one of their large suppliers was not producing/caring for the pigs as they wished. So it was dropped. You could get it still in small areas. For instance, when I went to visit my son at college in a smaller town in Virginia, that Chipotle got their pork from a local farmer so I could still order the pork at that location. I think it took well over a year for them to find a pork supplier that fit their requirements.

Not sure if Disney is just having trouble sourcing it and I definitely don't know if they have any requirements about humane treatment of the animal products they use.

Biergarten’s Pork Schnitzel

DS ate there yesterday and was told they are trying something new and open to feedback. He said it was good, but it’s also breaded and meant to be covered in sauce, so...

I have already lost my Braised Pork at BOG, so hoping this trend doesn’t extend to the sausages.
Sorry but im confused....its meant to be covered in a sauce??? Sure there are different versions, such as Jägerschnitzel. But traditional schnitzel at Biergarten (as far as i know...and someone pls correct me if im wrong) was always served plain. Its like that in a lot of eastern european countries too. Im not saying nobody EVER serves it with a sauce thou.

Yes, I forgot about the pork shanks.

I probably enjoy the pork dishes at Disney because there aren’t a lot of pork entrees on the menus here outside of pulled pork, ribs, sliced ham, and pork chop/tenderloin.

Was the chicken bad? the pork was one of my favorites. Third restaurant that took my favorite off the menu.

DS said it was good/ok, but he’s not a picky eater.

I always see sauce next to it and assumed it was supposed to be served that way. Perhaps I’m wrong?

What i meant was....by your statement I had simply envisioned schnitzels with sauce already on it. I was just saying that it wasnt the case. Having sauce on the side is a different story.

From the other side of the coin, my daughter and I are actually happy with this change. We’re eating there in a couple weeks and neither of us are very big pork eaters, but we love chicken. 😊

The biggest problem I have with this is that it is not correct for the country. The fowl substitute is almost always Turkey.

No, sauce served on side and meant to be covered or poured over prior to consumption.

DS likes fried, breaded, saucy, and beer. He doesn’t care about pork vs chicken. I enjoy it with/without the sauce so I can taste the meat. Then just pour sauce on the spaetzle. Again, maybe I’m doing it wrong eek

Yes, i understand now. I just misunderstood and thought you mean it was pre-sauced. Lol. There's no right or wrong way to eat schniztel. Just as long as you enjoy it. ;)
