I am driving down to WDW at the end of August. DD (19) and I will take turn driving, there will be no stopping overnight. We will break down the trip in 4 segments and each will drive about 5 hours while the other nap. We will be taking a rental car and leaving downtown Toronto at around 2pm. I used the Internet TripTik from CAA and this is the route they show me. Anyone had any comment in it, is this doable? Should we follow this route or buy Dave Hunter's book and drive along I75?

Oh, the destination is our hotel outside WDW.

That's roughly the way we went, except CAA had us avoid the US 19 because Summersville had been making a lot of money off tourist speeding tickets. If they're routing you through there, maybe they've stopped.

That said, driving through the mountains is breathtaking, and you get to avoid driving through Cincinnati, which we have had bad experiences with (YMMV).

Have a great trip.

Kungaloosh!

We actually did take 19, but took it very slow because of the warnings. It is a very scenic route.

I took this route last month (I forgot about the US 19 shortcut). Even with the strict enforcement, the US19 route it is still slightly faster than going through Charleston (and a much nicer view).

I found the drive very stress free (little traffic on I-77 and I-79 -- next to no truck traffic).

Lots of places to stop and eat or sleep (though W Va seemed to have the least).

Plenty of rest stops along the highway giving easy on/off with clean washrooms.

We also are going the end of August and wondering which way is best. We've been the I-75 way twice now and the thought of that long drive through Ohio, the state that never seems to end ....
Thought maybe I'd see what CAA recommended closer to departure, i.e. construction delays - see which route would be better. But what does everyone think? Is the I77-I79 route much faster? We're coming from Mississauga. After a day of driving, how far do you usually get the I77 way?

And I much prefer the 77/79/95 route. Must nicer drive, less traffic. We went on the US 19 route and just kept to the speed limit. We left the 404 and Bloomington area at 12:30 PM and we were in Lafayetteville for the night about 9:30PM. Left again about 7AM and we were in Titusville for a late dinner about 6:00PM. We had no problems on either route but the I-75 route seems a long longer. If you do drive I75 definatley by the Hunter book it is has great information in it.

Have a great trip.

The only drawback to that posted route is that there are not as many places to stop for gas, food and comfort stops as there are by going down I75, especially when travelling at night.:headache:

There are more course corrections, ways to get lost looking for signs on that route as well when driving at night. :scared:

I like the fact that you drive to I75 turn south and keep on going when I travel straight through. :goodvibes

I love the I-79/77 route. It is very pretty and like someone else has said, there are far fewer trucks than I-75. Even the locals seem to stick to the speed limit on U.S. 19, so I'm guessing they are still ticketing there (we only saw one car pulled over on that stretch this trip). Just be careful when driving through the night in the mountains - there are lots of deer around!
