This has been so hard. I can't even make sense of it. I'm sure I never will.

4 months ago we helped our 20 year old calico through the final stages of her life. We had a very long good-bye and chose the time we thought was right. It helped us a lot that we had 2 other cats to keep the house lively. It was sad but we all knew it was the right thing and it all just made sense.

This one has hit me so much harder. Chester was the life of the house. He was my buddy. He slept on me every night. I never sat down in the living room to watch anything without him settling onto my lap. He made us laugh. He was energetic and interactive. He was a remarkable cat. We've had a number of cats, but never one quite like him. We rescued him from a rural farm. Someone found a litter in a field and he was housed in a big dog crate with his litter mates while they awaited homes. He slept in the litter box. It took him a while to stop sleeping in the litter box when we brought him home. Here he is the day we brought him home in 2015.

And here he is as the beautiful adult cat he grew into.

We have no idea what happened. We found him dead on Wednesday evening. He was 6 1/2 years old. What a huge hole he has left in my heart.

I am so sorry for your loss, such a beautiful cat. I have lost many cats over the years and it never gets any easier. What a shock for you considering how sudden it was and he was relatively young. Could he have ingested something poisonous? It also might have been a heart attack or seizure. My six year old tabby Simba died that way and unfortunately it happened right in front of us, there was nothing we could do. Big hugs to you and your family :grouphug:

Thank you. We've racked our brains. We can't come up with anything he might have ingested. He liked to carry thing around in his mouth, so I considered choking. I did sweep my fingers down his throat and didn't find anything. I'm definitely no expert though.

We were all home but not with him when it happened. We all feel some guilt, but I've reassured them there's nothing anyone could have done.

I'm so sorry you experienced that with your tabby. So upsetting.

Yes, I understand the guilt but you are right that there was nothing that could have prevented it. Simba passed away almost eleven years ago and I still remember that day, so heartbreaking. My husband even tried giving him CPR but it was all over in a minute, happened so fast. I scooped him up and sped to the nearest vet, hoping they could perform a miracle. I knew he was already gone though. It's just going to take time-you could do what I did. I think I waited a month and then adopted three kitties from my local SPCA. I am officially a crazy cat lady.

I'm so sorry. I would be devastated. I know it's a touchy subject for people, but if it really bothers you, you could have a necropsy done to find out why. I've had this done on a pet before and it's brought some peace to me. I'm the kind of person who goes crazy when something like that happens and I don't have answers.

So sorry for the loss of your furbaby Chester. He was beautiful! We have a cat named Scooter who looks almost like him. In time may happier memories of the years spent with him replace some of the sadness you are feeling now. Chester is now running free on the Rainbow Bridge, with all of our other departed DIS furbabies. They are happy there and free of pain. Chester was loved, and he loved in return, and I believe that is the most we can ask of our furbabies. :grouphug:

I’m so so sorry. That is so awful. It could have been cardio myopathy. It’s more common in cats than dogs & most likely what happened. It happened to one of my dad’s cats who was only 3. He was a beautiful cat & such a cute kitten. 😔

I’m sorry. So hard to lose the furry family members - they are a source of unconditional love. And unexpectedly is heartbreaking.

Sorry to read this about, Chester, mom. He sure looks like a beauty, regal. As a rescue, you did give him some very good years of fun. My best for you and your daughter.

Always remember though, that Chester will be there, with so many others....

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.

Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge, together....

So sorry for your loss. We rescue quite a few cats but losing a best buddy is the worst. I can't say it gets easier, just the pain becomes a little less frequent and omnipresent. Just know that I've sent 5 friends to the rainbow bridge in the past 15 months or so that will keep Chester good company.

All that being said, hang in there. I'm sure Chester is grateful for the amazing life he had and is looking down on you from above. And, I have a feeling he'll be sending you a new friend soon (whether you want him/her or not. ;))
