ANOTHER Adventure in Autism (4/15) A Taste of What's to Come...

“Mommy, did you see that?” Tricia exclaimed.

“Yeah,” I said. “That kid’s costume is awesome!”

You crack me up :lmao:.

Yes, I truly am looking forward to camping at the Fort next summer, but I think I will enjoy the rustic luxury of the Villas at the Wilderness Lodge a whole lot more come this November! ::yes::

Well, the upcoming trip is good practice. After all, both places have "Wilderness" in their name :) .

And in case anyone’s interested,

That's only six weeks from tomorrow!! (Yay!)

Kathy

:banana:I'M INTERESTED!!! 6 WEEKS, YAY!!

That's only six weeks from tomorrow!! (Yay!)

6 weeks 5 days here is it wrong to be jealous of 5 days??

Kathy,

You know me well enough to understand how much my family appreciates nature. However, there is no way in the world I would camp at FW in a tent either :scared1:

There are some pretty freaky looking bugs in Florida and although I'm not afraid of the lizards, the very idea of one crawling around inside a tent while I was sleeping gives me the eebie jeebies.

The RV is definately the way to go :thumbsup2

and the villas - even better ;)

I knew him well. While we wern't friends, we did run into one another a lot.

Now, I've got another one for you.

This is in the SAME newspaper on the SAME day. Yes, it's my next door neighbor who just moved in this last May.

This is even more shocking to us.

http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/2007/09/21/news/local/28-muffley.txt

Oh, and an OB/GYN named Muffley!! :rotfl2: I always loved that. My wife is horrified by this news as our daughter has played at their house.

That's pretty creepy Buzz

I'd be horrified too!!!

ChrisLei: I thought it was every Disney fan's dream to live on Main Street, USA? ;)

MRYPPNS: I'm only sorry Aimee can't come to the parks with us!

jcc0621: I loved your report about the Campfire Program; we will definitely be checking that out! :thumbsup2

Jake & Crew: I do have my own Prince Charming to thank...

dismom 9761: Yay! :goodvibes Maybe we will meet up with you! (Not staying late though... getting up at an obscene hour!)

HalloweenQueen: Thanks for the awesome shirt design... now, where did I put that iron??

mvazul: Welcome back! (We will be bringing the industrial-size bottles of bug spray!!)

Tiggerbell: Welcome back to you, too! This is going to be the neverending pointless trip report thread for the next year or so!

Goofster: Thanks for reminding me about the bats... I'm sure the receipe will allow for the substitution of bat feet if the local mart runs out of chicken feet... Blech!

Marion: All is well, thanks. Just busy, busy, busy!!

Mousescrapper: Nice improv on the chewy tubes... they are a bit pricey!

MDF: Trust me, I've found Billy chewing on Aimee's toys more than once! :lmao: But never vice versa... good doggie!

jordanyosh: The Poly is Marathon Weekend, (Jan. 10-13) And I have not been training like I should! :ssst:

mearjan: We "overlapped" into the week after Jersey Week last year and the crowds really dropped off.... you will love it! :welcome:

mrsksomeday: I've already started packing a few little things; have you? :yay:

blue: Ed will be earning big overtime working as the official bug-slayer of the family!

Thanks for reading and posting!

Pre-Trip #32

The Cowboy Way... at Disney!

One of the saddest parts of having an ASD child is that the distractibility and language impairment associated with the autism make it very difficult to have normal, everyday conversations. The kinds of conversations most of us just take for granted. You say something, and I respond. Then you respond to me. :hyper2: It’s generally a two-way street. (Well, perhaps not always with a teenager, but you get what I mean!)

Billy's language skills have improved greatly over the past six years. We can communicate with each other, but only on a very basic level. At one point, he only utilized a form of speech known as echolalia, which means he would only mimic what was said to him. Kind of like a parrot…all he did was repeat what was said to him.

"How are you, Billy?"
"Howyou, Billy?"

This gradually faded away as he became involved with a structured ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) education program and speech therapy. We also found the echolalia diminished and eventually disappeared when we removed casien (a protein found in milk) from his diet.

But, many glaring language deficits remain. If I want to talk to Billy, I need to get right up in his face and tell him, pointedly, to “look at me!” so he can focus on me and on what I’m saying. Sometimes I even need to cup his face in my two hands so that I can adequately engage him. If I simply call something out to him from across the room, he hears, “Billy, Gvoeha;b?hru88%ll:^%m!! Normal (or “neuro-typical”) people can process all the stimuli from the environment in their brains. It simply overwhelms Billy. It must be like hearing constant static on your radio.

To drown all this out, he makes persistent humming, shrieking, and screeching sounds (stimming). It’s almost as if he is literally trying to hear himself think. Consequently, the rest of the family experiences static on their radios! The soundtrack of our daily lives includes a constant background of Billy’s stimming noises, which only disappears when he falls asleep. Or if he gets temporarily “stuck in a groove”:

"Go to the library?"
“The library is closed today, Billy. We will go to the library tomorrow.”
"Go to the library, please?"
“Good asking, Billy, but the library is closed. Tomorrow you will go to school, then you will come home on the bus, and then you will go to the library.”
Go to the library, PLEASE, mommy?"
“Billy, first comes sleep, then comes school, then comes library.”
"First, sleep. Then, school. Then, library!"
“Yes, Billy.”
"Hooray!"

Five minutes later....

"Go to library?"

:rolleyes2 Needless to say, “conversations” with Billy are a lot of work! (We're still reserving judgement on whether the medication is helping him... so far it doesn't seem to be.) When the family is sitting around the table and we are all talking together, Billy is usually content to simply eat his food… trying to join into a four-way conversation is just too far beyond his ability. But, that doesn’t mean we stop trying. :grouphug:

For instance, last night Ed, Tricia, and I were talking about plans for our nomadic summer, specifically, where we should camp with Eddie before we head down to Fort Wilderness. (Our choices so far are two weeks in the Great Smokey Mountains in N.C. or two weeks at Myrtle Beach, S.C.) Tricia’s vote was for the beach; mine was for the mountains, and Ed’s was undecided. I put down my fork and turned to Billy, who was busy shoveling food into his mouth. I got his attention and asked,

“Billy, do you want to go to vacation at the beach, or do you want to go to vacation in the mountains?” I said “vacation” because I wasn’t sure he would understand what I meant if I used the word, “camp”. :beach: I was fairly sure he would choose the beach, because he loves to swim, but I was really just trying to include him in the table conversation.

He did not answer (not unusual.) He just hummed. I tried again. “Billy, look at me! Would you like vacation at the beach or vacation at the mountains?” This time, it seemed to register and I got a definite response!

"No No No!" "No beach!!" "No mountains!!" "I want vacation at Walt Disney World!!"

Wow, that came out loud and clear! :lmao: We all laughed. “That’s my boy!” I chuckled. But he seemed a bit upset. “Go to Walt Disney World! Go to Walt Disney World,” he shouted. “Whoa, whoa, hold your horses, buddy!” Ed laughed. “We’re still going to Walt Disney World!”

We had to reassure him that we were still going to WDW for our vacation in a few weeks! He finally settled down. I think the question must have confused him a bit. When talking to Billy, I’ll just concentrate on one vacation at a time from now on! However, I loved the fact that my son was quite able to let us know that WDW was the only vacation destination for him! :goodvibes It really made my day.

I know you’ve heard me say it before, but it bears repeating. Billy just seems to light up when we’re at Disney. He still has his issues, for sure, but he just seems to be able to participate and communicate so much better when we are there. I’m sure that a lot of this is due, not only to the practical accommodations, such as the Guest Assistance Card, but to the incredible Cast Members who take the time to make Billy feel special, but at the same time just like any other kid there that day.

This is one special memory from last year’s trip… this time I’ve added pictures!

….Western music blared as a horse-drawn wagon led Woody, Jessie, Bullseye, and a group of brightly costumed cowboys and cowgirls as they sang and danced their way up the street. They stopped right in front of us!

wdwtrip06-403mk.jpg

wdwtrip06-398mk-1.jpg

The music and dancing got Billy's attention right away!

They sang a rousing greeting to the crowd, “Hey, Howdy, Hey!” and everyone clapped and cheered. We formed a large circle around the performers and the characters walked around for a moment, waving and giving high-fives. (Or in Bullseye’s case, high-hooves.)

wdwtrip06-408mk.jpg

The members of Woody’s two-steppin’ posse then went among the crowd looking for kids to help out with the next number, “She’ll Be Comin’ 'Round the Mountain.” Tricia and Billy were chosen, but Billy didn’t want to leave us, so only Tricia went over to the wagon with the others. We explained to the cowboy that Billy was autistic and might not be able to participate, anyway. He understood and said, “I’ll come back later, pardner!”

wdwtrip06-417mk.jpg

The younger kids were given hobby-horses and the older kids were given special prop hats. Their job was to play the part of mountains and other obstacles for the little ones to ride around. Tricia was given the part of an old mine. (Take a close look at her hat!) She was not exactly thrilled... there's nothing too glamourous about an old mine!

We all sang along as the little ones rode their horses in and out between the older ones. It was really cute! Naturally, all this was accompanied by a whole lot of stompin’ and whoopin’ and hollerin’ from the cowfolk.

When the song was done, the kids returned to their places and we were all introduced to a “newfangled dance” called the Hokey Pokey! Billy began jumping up and down excitedly. He knew the dance from school! The same cowboy from before came back and started doing the Hokey-Pokey with us. Billy was laughing and dancing and having such an obviously good time that he attracted the attention of one of the pretty cowgirls. She came over and, surprise! Billy reached out to her and said, “Let’s dance!” WOW!! :thumbsup2

wdwtrip06-424mk.jpg

wdwtrip06-426mk.jpg

wdwtrip06-427mk.jpg

wdwtrip06-428mk.jpg

She kept him fully engaged throughout the entire dance!

It was time for the troupe to leave. The cowboy and cowgirl praised Billy for doing such a good job with his cowboy dance. I told them that Billy really liked Woody and had even dressed up as Woody for Halloween. When the cowboy heard that, he brought Woody over to say hello! Billy was thrilled and gave him a big hug!

wdwtrip06-431mk.jpg

Those CMs made that one little show such a wonderful experience for both the kids, but especially for Billy. Once they realized that he might not be able to participate in a group with the other children, they made it a point to seek him out and to include him in the fun. It became one of my favorite memories of the entire trip!

"...That's what it's all about!"

*Sigh*.... Can't wait to go back!! pixiedust:

Okay yet again you have brought tears to my eyes.I love when you share stories about Billy and what Disney does for him.

The pictures are great!:thumbsup2 Tricia does look undecided about wether she likes her part.:goodvibes

Thanks for sharing Kathy!

Thanks. I am crying and my neighbors think I am completely crazy:upsidedow

I remember this stroy from your TR and it made me cry then too:goodvibes

:rotfl2: to Billy being mad that he wasn't going to WDW. You are raising him right:thumbsup2

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: "No No No!" "No beach!!" "No mountains!!" "I want vacation at Walt Disney World!!" Billy's cast his vote, all right.

Kathy,

Thank you for sharing your life w/ us. You and Ed are AMAZING parents. You are heroes!!!May God continue to bless you w/ moments like the one you just shared...

Kathy, I don't know where you get the patience.

You're such a wonderful mother :goodvibes

I should include Ed in that as well! (well not the mother part)

WDW is a special place for so many of us but I can see how it means so much more to you and your family :grouphug:

Good for Billy, he doesn't want the mountains or the beach, he knows exactly where vacation should be... Walt Disney World!!!

I loved that picture of Tricia, she doesn't quite seem to know if she should be happy about that hat or not.

I love how you describe the way you get through to Billy. The way you explain that this will happen, then this, then this. Reading about Billy and the library made me smile and brought back memories of Timmy from camp. He understood how many more days at camp he had by how many more showers he would take. He would say " ** more showers at camp?" and we would say "yes Timmy". It helped him so much. Then he would ask if there was camp at Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We would explain no showers at camp during those times.

Yet again you have made me cry. Anytime you talk about Billy and how he is at WDW I tear up. It is utterly amazing how wonderful WDW makes people feel. I can't wait to go back!!! 40 more days Kathy until we are there again:yay: .

I love that story... and the pictures are great! :dance3:

Im tearing up just reading this...that is wonderful - and really sums up the reason we go EVERY YEAR as well.:grouphug: hugs to billy

I'm not sure if I posted this on one of your other trip reports (I've enjoyed them, thanks for sharing!) but when we were on the Keys to the Kingdom tour a couple spoke up and said they had an autistic child who just thrives when they come to Disney. They said so many big strides for their child had happened there. I know there are a lot who criticize Disney but I really liked hearing that because for some, it really is a magical place.

And I loved the picture at the end with Billy hugging Woody (it brought tears to my eyes, I'm becoming such a softie as I get older ;) ).

Keep up the great writing! I can't wait to hear the Ft. Wilderness report! Next to VWL, it is our favorite spot on property. Be sure to take time for the campfire program, it's a lot of fun. We just went in August, and it is hot, but it can be done. The key is water, spray fans, water, swim a lot, water, get into a/c, water...you get the idea.

Pre-Trip #33"

Itty Bitty Nitty Gritty

Well, I knew it would happen. I’m generally an optimist, mind you, but I just knew it would happen. :sad2: They’ve been stalking me for days now… it was only a matter of time before they got me. I am now at their mercy.

“They” are the cold germs that I’ve been trying to avoid for the past week. First Billy started sniffling, then Tricia. This always seems to happen shortly after school starts. No amount of Clorox or Lysol can prevent it… its just part of the back-to-school routine.

I don’t know if it made things worse for him or not, but Ed had some dental work last week and he “got it” really bad… sore throat, fever, muscle aches, coughing and sneezing… the works! He’s just back to work today. Thankfully, he was scheduled to be off this weekend, so he only missed one day. The rest of us spent most of the weekend tippy-toeing around the house because he insisted upon trying to nap on the couch and then got grumpy when the kids kept waking him up! In any case, I’m glad he’s starting to feel a little better.

So because today is Monday and it’s my usual day off (and nobody else is around), I was really looking forward to some peace and quiet and the ability to catch up on some trip reports and some laundry (in that order, naturally!) Perhaps even some pre-Disney-packing activity… a bit of sorting and organizing of our stuff, so to speak.

It seemed for a few days that I might be spared; I was feeling fine. Then I woke up this morning and discovered that I was not going to escape from the dreaded cold germs after all… they got me! Oh well. It was worth it to get all those hugs and kisses from my Billy. Of course, he also tries to wipe his nose on my hair when hugging me, but that just comes with the territory! I still cannot get him to blow out into a tissue; he always sniffs in!

Ed asks, “Can’t you get his Occupational Therapist to work with him on that?” :rotfl2: Honey, I don’t think she would appreciate that job! If we just keep at it, I’m sure he’ll learn how to blow his nose before he turns twenty-one! BTW, he was not happy that I kept him home from school on Friday. He loves to go to school!

So I haven’t done as much today as I would have liked, but I did get to catch up on some trip and pre-trip reports. I try to limit them to only about a dozen or so because I start mixing them up in my head if I try to read more than that at one time! (Wish I could remember to take that Ginko!) There are so many interesting ones that I would like to read… but, we can’t have it all, can we?

As far as the November Trip is concerned (the one coming up in just under six weeks), there really isn’t much to do yet, but I did manage to do an itty bit. I checked TGM this morning and found that he updated his advice on Least Crowded Days to fall in line with some changes made to the nighttime entertainment schedule. I printed them up and put them in my binder just so I would have the most current info, but it really doesn’t change my daily itinerary. All that’s been worked out long ago.

Yesterday I picked up a really cute “train case” for Tricia to use for her own personal care items and toiletries. I always packed the kids’ stuff with mine, but now that she’s getting older, I though she might appreciate having her own. I was right and she was thrilled. :cutie: (Ah, it’s still the little things that can make her happy!)

Today I grabbed some of our “summer stuff” and put it aside to be officially packed at a later time: the bathing suits and sandals, the sunscreen and bug spray. It’s still in the 80’s here, so I can’t really start packing shorts and t-shirts, yet. I was able to set aside all of our long-sleeved Disney shirts, however, so that’s something.

Oh, and speaking of Disney shirts, my DIS-friend, Halloweenqueen, has graciously offered to make a shirt design for me and I am anxiously awaiting the iron-on transfer papers in the mail. I plan to make matching shirts for us and for my sister’s family. I think I can handle ironing. (I hope I can handle ironing!) I know that some of you highly motivated and crafty people make several different shirts, but I think that for the first time, I will start out slow. It will be ten shirts, total, and I will post pics when they are done. I ordered blank, short-sleeved, royal blue t-shirts for everyone from www.jiffyshirts.com. I think royal blue is a color that looks good on everyone; I hope they turn out all right! (Send pixiedust, please!)

Another little thing I did was to call customer service for my Disney Rewards Visa and requested that my Rewards Dollars be transferred to a Rewards Card. It’s my first time doing this and I’m pleased to report that we have earned $40 in Reward Dollars. Every little bit helps, especially when Tricia and I pass one of those pin carts! ;)

And now for the January Mom & Dad Only Trip: I was finally able to reserve a Half Marathon Grandstand Fan Package for myself. I asked Ed if he wanted the special Runner's Retreat Package for himself, but he declined. It didn’t seem worth $50 to him just to have a VIP tent in which to warm-up before and cool down after the half-marathon. The only other special amenities offered are “a carpet for stretching” and special character greets. Food and beverages are available even without the package. I’m sure the runner’s retreat is nice and everything, but they even charge $10 more if you want a post-race massage. I love Disney, but yikes, they sure know how to go after a profit!

For a somewhat more reasonable $25, my Fan Package includes reserved grandstand bleacher seating at the finish, a boxed breakfast, hot and cold beverages throughout the race, and a noisemaker. Honestly, I’m mostly interested in getting the reserved seating.

:cheer2: My plan is the same as last years’: First go to the Magic Kingdom and cheer him on there, then hop on the monorail and zip over to EPCOT for the finish. I easily found a nice viewing spot in the MK, but it was very difficult to find a good viewing spot once I arrived at the finish. Reserved seating sounds good to me! :thumbsup2 So, that’s another thing that’s taken care of.

(If anyone is interested, you can purchase a VIP runner or fan package at www.disneyworldsports.disney.go.com. Click on “Marathon Weekend” and the info will appear.)

And that’s about all I got done today, Disney-wise. A little bit of laundry… a little bit of cleaning… and a little bit of rest before the kids came home. Billy, Tricia and I had a much-anticipated after-school date at the town library. It’s been closed for about two months for major renovations and Billy has been chomping at the bit to get back to the video and DVD section. I wasn’t feeling too great, but I just couldn’t disappoint him.

Wow, the place is huge now! They even put in a café. Billy was in heaven…he spent about 20 minutes running around looking at everything and making his choices. He’s watching one of the videos right now (The Magic School Bus.) I think I’ll have to wait until after dinner to do homework with him. He’s just too excited now!

And though it may sound strange, I’m actually rather excited about all of us cycling through our headcolds now. Better now than in….

One month, one week, and 3 days!!!

:dance3:

Until next time,

Kathy

I agree. You're a lot better getting sick now (even though it sucks) than being sick on vacation. I've been a touch under the weather myself. I think Lin is too but she's so busy mowing the lawn and ironing my shirts that she doesn't have time to be ill.

Me? When I'm sick I am one worthless human being. I moan. I grunt. I'm ill tempered. I whine. It ain't a pretty sight.

I wouldn't $50 either just to warm up on the carpet and have tent over me. When I went to WDW for the marathon I remember my warm up being a cold slice of Giardano's pizza and a warm Mountain Dew. It worked though. I survived the dreaded 3.1 miles (5k   )
