Annual Pass question...

I just decided to take a quick, last minute trip to WDW 12/13 to 12/17. I am also heading down in April so I am going to purchase an AP. I would like to get the cheapest one possible, but I believe that is the Gold pass. The trouble is that I believe 12/17 is the beginning of the black out dates on the Gold pass. I was thinking that I could possibly purchase the Gold and maybe go to Disney Springs for the day, but should I decide I really need more park time, would I be able to go to Guest Services and upgrade that to a Platinum pass on that day?

You can upgrade any active AP at any time to a higher level with full credit. Dates continue per the original pass. I confirmed this with MS who talked to ticketing for me less than a month ago as I wanted to make sure I could upgrade Gold to Platinum in the spring if we decide to go at Easter.

Thank you! I was kind of thinking that so I went ahead and bought the Gold Pass. If I decide to go to a park on 12/17, I will pay the $100 to upgrade, and if not, then I will have saved myself $100. Thanks again!

It has always been the case so we had no reason to think these passes changed anything but I made them ask just to make sure because you really never know with Disney, especially when these completely new and yet to be fully defined tickets just came out. The good news is that all tickets are still up-gradable, including all these.
