Annual pass includes photo pass. Do I still need memory maker?

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me. I am considering buying an annual pass and the Disney site says one of the benefits of doing this is that photo pass is included. Is this the same thing as memory maker? Would appreciate some help decrypting this...thanks!

If you have an AP with the benefit, you do not need memory maker. Other threads have reported that if you already bought MM, you can call and get a refund (despite the fact that I think the original purchase receipt says non-refundable). It's slightly different from MM in that your AP entitlement lasts all year, where MM purchasers have a specific window where their photos are captured for the price and a different amount of time before they expire (disappear from the photo area of MDE).

It's not PhotoPass that's included, it's PhotoPass downloads. (PhotoPass is just the photo-taking service, which is free for everyone.) It's actually better than Memory Maker because it's good for the entire time the AP is active, where MM is basically good for 75 days. (The pictures are available for download for 45 days after they're taken and you can add pictures for 30 days after the first download.)

So, if I understand correctly, Memory Maker is $169, but instead one of us on our upcoming trip could just upgrade their 9-day PH to a DVC Gold AP for $90 and we would wind up with something cheaper and better. This sounds like a no-brainer, but am I overlooking something?

Just the fact that it's $149 if you buy before you go. ;)

As long as the person upgrading is a DVC member and with tax the upgrade will be more like $100. Still less than $149. Also, keep in mind that the Gold AP has blackout dates - the 2 weeks of Christmas and New Years and the 2 weeks that blanket Easter.

Thanks for the additional info. The blackout dates won't affect us on our upcoming trip. It looks like the only risk is that I will be tempted to use the AP to make additional visits over the course of the year!

I heard that the AP photo pass only allows the AP holder to download but the MM allows everyone in the party to download. Seems like an important detail to investigate.

No, with MM only one person is in charge of the entitlement (although that doesn't have to be the person who purchases it) and only that person can do the downloads.

So if I buy an AP (and I'm the only one with an AP in my family), will my other family members be able to take Photopass pics without me there (like on rides, or if we split up) and will it still show up in my account (maybe because the magic bands are linked?).

Yep, as long as they're on your Friends and Family list.

If I have a 5 day base ticket and plan to upgrade to an AP upon entering the park, is the memory maker benefit immediate? i.e. will the pictures we take that day be included?

Yes. As long as anyone is linked to your family and friends list, you'll get everyone's photos whether your with them at Disney or not

Yes it'll be there. It'll be under the photopass tab in your MDE

When my AP expires do I lose access to my photos? I have photos that say they will be there until April of 2017 but my AP expires at the end of May 2016. I'm not planning on renewing my AP right away so will I lose my pictures when my AP expires? I have a long trip coming up and we won't have much time to download the pictures with borders and stuff before my AP expires.

I believe your pictures will be there 30-45 days after your AP expires. But you'll lose the download ability once your AP expires.
