Walt Disney explores India as production base
Press Trust of India
Mumbai,, March 15

Global entertainment major The Walt Disney Company is exploring India as a production base for its animation and feature films, and is planning to tap the country's commercial ability, including that in radio, animation and TV broadcasting and content.

"India is a significant base for outsourcing of entertainment content and co-production, and we are on a fact-finding exercise in the country", Walt Disney Chief Operating Officer (COO) Andy Bird said in Mumbai on Monday.

Bird, who had met Information and Broadcasting Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, said investing in radio, music and film industry would be the company's priority.

He said Walt Disney intends to have a powerful presence in India.

I&B Minister said he had briefed Walt Disney COO of India regulatory and cultural framework and added that the government would discuss on all possibilities, including tying up with Films Production Division and other organisations in the country.

India is a significant base for outsourcing
While Disney's at it, why don't they try and outsource the CEO job. I mean, if you can outsource everything else!

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the use of India as a source of anything. It is pretty likely today if you call a customer service number you are speaking with someone in India. More and more service based jobs - tax preparation is huge right now - are being sourced to India. The education levels are high and they train these folks so you don't know they are not US natives, even training them to use a variety of US dialects. At my university we are in the process of collecting resumes for a variety of adjunct positions and have received quite a number from India. Apparently these folks are confusing our need (actual presence in classrooms) with our online presence (we do offer courses totally online).

I saw a piece on TV the other day about outsourcing. An owner of a company needed programers. He had two choices. Outsource to India for $40,000 salary, hire here for $80,000 salary. He looked at it further and realized if he outsource, he would have to let the programers he had go. Then he came up with a third choice. What if he advertised for programmers for $40,000 salaries and keep the jobs here.

To his surprise he got more responses than he had available positions. One of the new programmer was asked why she took the job. Her reply was "I needed the job".

The one thing us americans are going to have to realize is we are now competing with the world. Jobs are going to continue to go overseas until labor costs equalize. And it will not make any difference who is in the oval office or congress. They cannot control it.

It's the old story.......supply and demand.

A lot of animation actually goes on overseas. For example the now-defunct (and soon to be re-risen) family guy was animated in Korea. The same goes for the simpsons & futurama. Why? b/c it's cheaper. *sings* mooooooney makes the world go round, the world go around, the world go around....

But a lot of foreign jobs are coming here also. Seimans (sp) employee's thousands in this country. Honda & Toyota built factories here. A rule of thumb: If 20 percent or more of your products final cost is labor,ie textiles, then it is better to out source it. Animation must have an extremely high labor cost percentage.

Be careful what you ask for, you may get it. If you outsource jobs to save your business money, then you are training these people to replace your business at your expense. The result will be you will lose in the end. :smooth:

What I don't understand is this....if we keep taking jobs from Americans and giving those jobs to the rest of the world, but corporations still rely on Americans as the prime consumers-how does this work? OR is it just a matter of CEO's like Eisner doing the quick, cheapest thing at the moment with no plan beyond the next shareholder meeting?

I think it's just what you said, lodgelady, the execs just want to make sure they meet the next quarterly numbers and do what they have to do to make sure of that. Sigh.....
