Hi guys,

I just found a link to one of the companys who has worked on the construction of AKL. What i find is funny is, that the thatched roofs is "fake", meaning they are made of synthetic materials.

I mean, comeon Disney, if you dont know how to make the real thing, just look around in Denmark, im sure youll find a company who could make it for you !! :rotfl:

The Florida hurricane construction codes might have something to do with it.

I'm a decorative artist by trade and one of the reasons I love going to Disney is to see all the wonderful faux and scenic work there. I know people probably wonder about the crazy lady looking at the ceilings and walls and touching all the surfaces when I'm there. Disney is the master of faux! It only makes sense that the thatch roof is faux; most of the stonework is faux, too. They even have Vegas beat when it comes to faux work.

Do you have any idea how much lightening we have in Florida? A real thatched roof probably wouldn't stand up real well to a lightening strike. If you look around, most roofs in Florida are not wood for that very reason. Look closely and you will see lightening rods on all Disney structures.

yeah dude, the real thing would get blown away for sure.

hurricanes, and tornados, and large amounts of rain, oh my!

Hurricane Codes and Fire Codes have everything to do with it, wonder how much their liability insurance premium is :earseek:

Right. And while they're at it, they should have built it in Africa. Now that would be authentic.

that Cinderella's Castle is not a real castle!!!! Can you believe it??? It is not really made of stone which were carried to the Kingdom of Orlando by serfs!!!! Seriously, do you really think they could use real thatch to make a roof that would not only be watertight but also meet the strict fire and hurricane codes?!?!

So true! And the hurricanes you guys just had last year.. AKL would be a HUGE mess if it had a real thatched roof!

Real thatch would be a fire hazard plain and simple. This is the same reason it is not real thatch on the building in the UK at Epcot.

What about the Jungle Cruise? Those are real headhunters, right?

Then of course there are those HUGE logs that they used at the Wilderness Lodge..........must have cleared out the forest for them! And how did that huge mouse get by the exterminator?? the white gloves must have thrown the guy off!

I heard a rumor that Mickey is not a real mouse...

Also, Captain Hook is not a real pirate. He's just an actor. He goes home and takes off his hook and hat and reads his kids cute bedtime stories about puppies when he finishes his shift.

Sorry kids, but it's true.

We have lots of 90-150 year old buldings in Denmark with thatched roofs.
A thatched roof has a lifespan of 50-80 years. We have more rainy days in Denmark than in the Orlando area, and we do have lightnings too, but the buildings is still there 150 years later.

Yes i know, Disney makes a lot of things/buildings to look like they were made of wood/stone.

The reason i made this post, was because i found a link to one of the companys who actualy has made parts of AKL, and i thought it was nice and wanted to share that with you guys.

I mean, thatch is thatch, and i thought they for once could make it with the material that it should be made of, not some synthetic material.

One final remark to a few of the smart remarks to my post: As i understand it, its not well seen to flame posters here on Disboards, correct me if im wrong.

If it is allowed, then ill pull out my flamethrower in the future.

No flame just telling you that real thatch could be a fire hazard. The synthetic stuff is flame proof and therefore a much better option. It will also never look any different than it does today. And while you have lighting in Denmark it is nothing to what we have in Florida. Florida is considered the lighting capital of the world. Also I am sure that the synthetic stuff is more expansive than the real stuff, so cost was not an issue.
