Animal Kingdom Lodge, Synthetic !

We have lots of 90-150 year old buldings in Denmark with thatched roofs.
A thatched roof has a lifespan of 50-80 years. We have more rainy days in Denmark than in the Orlando area, and we do have lightnings too, but the buildings is still there 150 years later.

Yes i know, Disney makes a lot of things/buildings to look like they were made of wood/stone.

The reason i made this post, was because i found a link to one of the companys who actualy has made parts of AKL, and i thought it was nice and wanted to share that with you guys.

I mean, thatch is thatch, and i thought they for once could make it with the material that it should be made of, not some synthetic material.

One final remark to a few of the smart remarks to my post: As i understand it, its not well seen to flame posters here on Disboards, correct me if im wrong.

If it is allowed, then ill pull out my flamethrower in the future.

I hope you didn't take my post as a "smart remark". I wasn't trying to flame you. It was an honest answer to what I thought was a question. If I offended you, I apologize.

Hi guys,

I just found a link to one of the companys who has worked on the construction of AKL. What i find is funny is, that the thatched roofs is "fake", meaning they are made of synthetic materials.

I mean, comeon Disney, if you dont know how to make the real thing, just look around in Denmark, im sure youll find a company who could make it for you !! :rotfl:

Company link with pics of roof AKL

I seriously doubt a REAL thatched roof wouldv'e made it thru all the hurricanes Florida got pounded with last year with 100+ mile an hour winds.

Feralpeg, it wasnt directed at you, sorry but i got a little mad about some of the posts! :goodvibes

It depends on how old the thatched roof is!. If it was less than 30 years old, it would not be damaged. A older thatched roof would be damaged. A thatched roof more than 50 years old would be gone completely.

So my guess would be, if made in Orlando, that they would have to replace the roof every 30 years to be safe.

The roof would over time lose some of its original color, and become alot darker (maybe thats why Disney whants a synthetic thatch roof, to keep it the same color, nomatter how old it gets).

We rarly have winds of 100 mph in Denmark (1 or 2 days a year), and the thatched roofs in my area where i live tends to be undamaged every time.
The only roof type that often gets damaged under those storms in Denmark, is the ones made of larger "tiles" (size about: 40 x 40 inches).
