Angry Disney Cast Member at Carousel of Progress

Is it my imagination, or wasn't there a cast member inside each theater at one time? If there would have been a live cast member, this may not have happened.

Mike from all the times I ride it the CM comes in says the spiel at the beginning and as soon as he/she is done they walk out of the theater, since there are usually only two or three cast members available at the COP.

You have to remember that safety comes first. This is a ride where the seat sections are continually moving and not what you see on the stages. Someone trying to leave could be injured. I think the CM got frustrated; but he was doing his job. He is not able to go in either because of the safety issue. I am not sure if explaining the danger is allowed but maybe doing that might have gotten the rude guests causing the problem to sit back down.
Maybe the ride needs a last minute spiel saying how long the ride is and that you will not be allowed out of your seat during the whole ride. If you can't do that then you have 2 minutes to exit before the ride begins. Then if anyone gets up to leave-conveniently have security outside the building to help them find the exit of the park.

So you would have security remove someone due to an emergency situation? Seems a little bit harsh to me.

Everytime I ride CoP my show is interrupted at least once to remind guests to remain seated. SO over the course of a day they probably have to say it at least 50 times, so I do not think the castmembers are over reacting at all. If they had to announce it that many times during a single show then obviously guests were not listening and disrespecting others as they were trying to watch the show. If I was in that theatre I would be so annoyed and irritated by the other guests, I might have hog tied them so they couldnt stand up.

Why can't we just sit and enjoy CoP?

I don't have a problem with the CM's reaction at all. I'm getting the impression that the recording/video didn't even start until the situation had been going on for awhile.

This obviously wasn't an emergency situation. This was a case of some idiot deciding to exit the show in the middle in one of the theaters. Once that happens, they got stuck in a situation with the loop. And unfortunately, the couldn't get out of the loop and restart the proper motion of the show because people kept deciding to get up and walk out instead of following the CM instructions.

As to the previous poster asking about a CM in each theater.... I too remember that back in the day. These days however with Cutbacks and everything else, I often will only see 1 or 2 CM's working the CoP when I'm down there. I highly doubt Disney would pay for the staff of having a CM in each theater like they used too. For the most part, the in-theater staff have been replaced by the IR Cameras up on the wall. the Downside is that many guests don't seem to realize that they are still being watched, and as a result, end up doing things that they would never do if someone was physically there watching them.

As for the comments about people just having no respect these days.... i hate to say it... but I can't help buy agree. We see it all over the place these days. Between the internet, our super-PC/litigious culture, etc... You just don't see people (kids, adults, parents, you name it) taking anywhere near the same type of pride or responsibility in things that they did 20yrs ago..... but that's a whole different conversation.

(i'm too young to feel this old.... ugh)

Honestly I do not know how they do as well as they do, I don't tolerate stupid. And I think the title is misnamed, he is frustrated, not angry and rightfully so.

I kept expecting something to happen, as it didn't seem to me like the CM was that out of hand. It's obvious that they are plainly ignoring the CM - but it also appears that the show wasn't proceeding as normal and the guests could have been just as much frustrated...it's difficult to say whether the ride wasn't functioning because of the guests, or in spite of them...

I can't really relate to this post b/c the only time I rode CoP, DH and I and our two friends were the ONLY and I mean the ONLY people in the theater.

We applauded for the poor CM who made his safety spiel as if the place was full and wouldn't even make eye contact with us.

We laughed and best of all we SANG ALONG! Probably one of the best times I've had on an attraction!

Just a little trivia:

The brilliant comedienne Lily Tomlin used to work at Disneyland as the "live" CM inside of the CoP before she "made it big" on "Laugh-In".

(I'm guessing this was the early 60's)

Anyway, she's often told the story of how the experience of watching the same show 100 times a day and the audience's reactions to it would help her deal with the nights that she herself "bombed" on stage.

Some audiences, she has said, would laugh hysterically and clap through the entire show, while others would just sit there silent and stone-faced.

Given that each show was exactly the same with the exact same jokes and timing, she figured out that sometimes it's just the audience that can't be entertained more so than what is going on on stage.

Classless, disrespectful parents raising classless, disrespectful children.

Either I'm getting older, or it's getting worse year by year.

Oh, wait - It's both. :sad1:
You're absolutely right - it is both. People seem to get dumber, ruder, and more obnoxious every year, and some of them seem to even take pride in passing these traits on to their children.

Honestly I do not know how they do as well as they do, I don't tolerate stupid. And I think the title is misnamed, he is frustrated, not angry and rightfully so.
I have a very low stupid tolerance myself. I had a supervisor once who told me that I was "prejudiced against unintelligent people", and she said it seriously and with a straight face in my yearly review. Apparently she wanted me to be more tolerant of the more brain dead among my coworkers. Um, no. I work for myself now, and I still can't stand stupid.

Insterestingly, I enjoy working with folks who are intellectually challenged due to genetic causes like Down's, or from head injuries and stroke. Folks tell me I'm astonishingly patient and calm. It's the obtuse that send me screaming and make me want to slap 'em.

If this was on FB, I'd "like" it. Actually, I love it. Thanks for sharing.

And back to topic now...

It sounded like the CM was just very frustrated. I don't think many people know or even care about all the safety mechanisms built into the ride, we got a lesson this summer after getting stuck on the Pooh ride for 45 min and a woman walked out at 1 point (don't even ask me how she jumped down out of the honey pot with a small child cause that baffled us).

As a pp said, the safety rules are reviewed at the beginning of each ride for a reason..safety.

And unfortunately you can't fix stupid.
