Has anyone used AFM - can you give me the low down on the quality and taste of the food. I am looking into if for my father, he as recently lost some hours at work and is having a hard time financially. Is this too much food for one?

TIA

Here is a really old thread on Angelfood Ministries:

I have heard mixed reviews of the food. Honestly, I think it comes down to how strapped youa re financially and if you are willing to "settle" for processed foods over fresher alternatives.

One of the ladies at our church bought a "senior box" this month. The food looked perfectly portioned for one older adult with some good combinations. I'm not sure she's tried them yet because her son and DIL have been here this week. Once she tries them out, I'll be back and post a review.

Just an FYI -- my local paper ran a story about 2 weeks ago stating that the Angel Food Headquarteres was raided by the CIA and FBI. It seems that the Pastor in charge of this was paying himslef a million a year or something like that... I guess the cheap food still had some profitability! They are still in operation though.

Recently there has been reports in the news that the people that run Angel Food Ministries are being investigated. Apparently, they have been paying themselves high salaries for administrators of a charity. If you do a search on one of the news sites you can find this info.

Have you considered getting into couponing as another way to buy food cheaper? Check out www.couponmom.com

I did it about 3 times, and in my experience, I got a lot of food that I could probably buy for around the same price at Aldi. It was a lot of processed food, and nothing was fresh. It would be good to help with the food budget, but I wouldn't plan on it as my only source of food. It wouldn't be too much food for one, because most of the items are in larger packages where he could take out what he would use, and save the rest for later. The quality of the stuff that I got was about the quality of the cheapest stuff you could buy at the grocery store, but then there were some brand name items too. In the 3 times I did it, I got a ton of breaded chicken (breasts, 2 bags of thighs, tenders, and popcorn type chicken), dried beans, peanut butter, Old El Paso nacho flavored taco shells, a roll of ground beef, cereal, frozen mixed vegetables, Mrs. Smith's pies (one apple, one pumpkin cream), BBQ ribs (they were fatty and tough), dry rice, margarine, Oscar Meyer lunch meat (this was pretty good), plus a lot more I can't remember. I stopped getting it because I thought I could probably get as much value for my $30 at a grocery store and I could get items that were more suited to my tastes. Also, I didn't plan my meals well, so a lot of the Angel Food food went to waste. I have friends who have gotten the food regularly for a couple of years (they have 5 kids) and they just love it. I would suggest to try it once or twice and see if works for your Father. When I did it, it was the middle of winter, so maybe they get more fresh foods in summer.

I'm picking up my first AFM order tomorrow thought i'd give it a try. my box didn't include pies or margarine or anything like that wish it did.it was dinners, peanut butter, rice, mac and cheese, some frozen veggies, bacon i think eggs too can't remember for 30.00 then you can order additional things like steaks or fruit etc. i have a small fridge/freezer so i couldn't order the additional things. i thought for the price it was worth trying, anything to get my food bill down.

This is the plan I was thinking would work for him, since he is only one person and these are fully cooked, heat and serve meals. He does not have a full kitchen to work with... just a microwave, toater oven and refrigerator /freezer.

I would like to hear her thoughts on the quality and taste, if you have a chance to post again.

Thanks.

That's shocking. I'm always disturbed by wolves in sheep's clothing stories, if that's what this is.

We have gotten the senior meals box and thought it was very good. Seemed to have more food than a typical frozen meal. We have also had other boxes, the fresh friut and veg boxes are awesome. NO processed anything, just carrots/potatoes/fruit etc...for $28. That is a steal of a bargain if you ask me.

Do they have meals on wheels where he lives? Maybe he would qualify for that.

I hate to say I'm probably jaded enough to not be surprised :(
We tried it for a few months..some things were OK, but alot was not just over processed, it was inedible. The brick that looked like rubber that was called meatloaf did it for me (the gravy was good though :) )
You could really get better quality for less just by being a careful shopper.

My wife and I did that for a while but found that we through away about half the stuff because we didn't like it or it was bad quality. Then we found another program called Share which is much better. I don't think we've every thrown anything away since we switched.

We've been doing it for about a year. Some months are good & others aren't. We're going to get it for next month. Regarding the steaks, I use to struggle with them but i found a great recipe for crockpot steak & now that's what I make with those cuts. It makes them fork-tender & it tastes wonderful. I even save the leftover sauce to mix with browned ground beef for a 2nd meal.
I've tried SHARE as well & liked it too. I'll probably alternate between the 2.

I received my first box this past Saturday. The steaks are great! I also purchased an extra steak box and the fruit/vegetables all were good. The down side is the regular box (#1). I don't like dried beans, powder mac & cheese, box shelf milk....other that than we are very pleased with ours. We gave what we don't want to a food bank for someone else to enjoy. We will try it again for March.

I think it was a goode value. We loved the fresh pineapple from the veggie fruit box, which i normally wouldn't have bought at the store. The chicken breast tasted great, used it for chicken broccoli linguine. I plan on gettting one for next month as well. One of daughters is out of work, we bought her a box, she cried and said now I can eat.

We used AFM a few times when we lived in another state. I had just lost my job and it was a real godsend. Actually, a friend's Sunday School class gave us two boxes from AFM, either in November or December, as a gift. Nowadays we don't use them because of my son's allergies: he really can't have any prepackaged foods or anything with preservatives or additives in it.
