Angel Food box UPDATE March ORDER TIME 16th

I love Angel Food. I work with people who are unemployed and actually keep the menu in my office for them to pick up. And I won't recommend something highly unless I (a) have used it and see that its a good thing or (b)currently use it myself. I love the options that it gives me with my groceries. I won't buy alot of meat or pork and generally just buy bags of chicken when they go on sale because of the cost but this is a great way for me to be able to get meat and pork. I also just bought the fruit and vega box. I was blow away!! I couldn't believe how fresh the vega and fruits were. Very good for the diet and very cheap! They are amazing quality. It might depend on when you get your fruits (as a previous poster said that they were almost over ripe) because I got my box in Jan and the avocade is no where near ripe! (Sticker says "ripe when soft", I swear you could run the thing over its so hard!) And I love that there is no income guidelines. They are out to help everybody, which in this economy is fabulous! And now you can purchase online. Big help, as I never carry cash or checks due to my job. I can go online and buy using my debit or credit card. I do price shop around and wont buy if I can get cheaper, but generally they get it cheaper. I bought 10 lbs of chicken poppers for $18. My boyfriend loves them and always wants to have them for dinner. Told him we were having chicken and he looked at me all excited and said "Those popcorn chicken things" Had to tell him that "no, chicken comes in other forms" :rotfl: As I told someone once with it, try one box and see what you think. I did and have been hooked!!

:lmao: Wow is there such a thing as Middle class food?? Since when did grocery stores discriminate. I'm middle class and I buy what I like to eat, not whats more expensive.
As opposed to filet mignon and lobster tail every night. Sorry that I didn't explain myself plainly enough. I give up. I tried to be supportive of Angel Food ministries and somehow offended an entire army of people. That is exactly why I have been on the boards for ten plus years and have comparatively few posts. People pounce on the most well-meant remark. Whatever.

There is a difference in food stores (at least in some areas of the country).

There are many butcher shops and speciality markets in my neck of the woods that sell meats that are $50+ per pound (Kobi beef and such), all different grades of caviar, lobsters, truffles, etc. etc. There are certain brands of chicken (free range and boutique ranch) that sell for over $15 per pound (totally insane IMHO).

So I understand the *middle-class* comment and where she was coming from.

Wow I don't think you did so very respectfully because a pork roast is a traditional cut of meat for some people from some cultures and trust me many people who are far above your income bracket "middle class" love and eat pork roast because its a traditional food for them.

These are the budget boards and there here for people to help each other out and if your not helping well don't let the door slap you on the way out. that's all I can say.

For everyone else please do tell me more do you know if any of the meats veggies are natural or organic I buy into csa's during the summer and early winter but there really isn't anything in my area for late winter or spring so I'm looking for some healthy affordable options and I try to buy local so I'm supporting local economy, getting fresher veggies and not contributing extra to my carbon footprint.

And I'm sorry but I get so sick of some of the stuff I read and need to respond sometimes.

:worship:
I am not sure they would be organic, maybe the website would mention.
Pork roast, with saurkraut, pulled pork BBQ, spiced with rosemary and seasonings like a porketta, are my favorits, or cut into chops. I have been able to find in SAMS in the past a huge length of pork, and have the small end cut into country boneless ribs, then several chops leaving the last portion for a roast. I cant do that right now, but maybe income tax if we get a refund. That is generally good for 5 meals for about $30.ish

THe Angel food box may not be for everyone, especially those that desire more control over amounts and type of foods. But I agree the option for those that need a helping hand to control the bills in this economy, and food is our next highest to our mortgage, I value the option.I have noticed a huge thing is staying out of grocery store and making lots of extra purchases.

I found we were not eating the same old stuff, We are using everything that was packaged. The quantity of portions was small for a family of four, but mixed with rice, fresh peppers, the frozen chicken was a great meal.

The spareribs were a nice find this month. At least they had meat on compared to a budget pack I recently bought. Not the best I had, the priice was right! THe hamburg went into an Aztec stew, beans. corn, and tomato soup.

It use to be nice to walk into a butcher around here, skip the middle man and fresh days cut meat, some as you stood there. Those days are gone.

ds hunts, I do not care for fresh meat, he stocks up. But it cost to butcher and add pork to the hamburger, and sausage deer meat.

So far this winter, I have been lucky with Aldi's basic veggies. We do have one of the highest grossing Aldi's, maybe things move fast? But, Picking up the sweet potatoes, red and yellow sweet peppers, celery was great, and huge bag of fresh carrots with no splits of skinny minis.

I wonder what our diet will reflect on the cholesterol though with all the rice and bean added most of the winter? It is a filler for the meal. protein, but how is it cholesterol wise?

I am considering the fruit/veggie option this month.
I do miss my fresh fruit, it is just too expensive local, Sam's is so high. I did get berrys for dd to make her smoothies at Walmart.
I have some wild berries in my forest edges to our yard. I think I will add strawberries this year.

There is no cholesterol in beans or rice unless you cook it in something with cholesterol. Cholesterol comes from animal products. Actually beans are good for helping keep your cholesterol low. Beans are a great source of protein, rice not so much.

Just goggle Angel Food and the main site will come up. It's a food ministry. You will want to see where you can pick up the food in your area, and click on the menu to see what is offered (it changes either monthly or weekly, I'm not sure which). You pay the fee listed and receive what's in the food, no questions, no paperwork.
Good Luck to your family, it's a hard economy right now.

Evi, my friend, I have no idea what set you off. All I was saying is that I am your average joe, and I buy my food at the supermarket, and the Angel Food stuff is the same quality for a lot less money. But once I got a pork roast that was full of gristle and crappy quality. But usually they are good. Believe me, I eat plenty of pork roast.
Geez.

I did go back and reread and I am sorry I read your post wrong. I just love some of the info on the boards but come across so much crap that I jumped the gun, but again that's not your fault.

Bump to share with others.

Oh, grocery stores discriminate every day, especially when it comes to cuts of meat and green produce.

Stores in low-income areas carry very few high-end meat cuts, but more noticably, they carry a lot more of the cuts that very few middle-class nonimmigrant families will eat: organ meats. They also tend to carry a lot more meat/bone cuts, such as large bags of chicken necks or chicken backs, pigs' feet, beef backs, etc. I happen to love organ meats, and years ago I learned to visit meat markets in the older working-class parts of the city to get the best selection.

Found a great alternative to take out Pizza. Aldi.
They have a not frozen, in the cold meat area, Family size pizza, I get 12 slices out of it.
They have extra cheese and pepperoni that we like.
I think it was 15 minutes at 425?
But it is only $5.99 !!!!!!!
I got three and one we froze in quarters. :thumbsup2

There is another food box program similar to Angel Food called Great Food For All (greatfoodforall.com). They also offer $30 basic boxes and then some other boxes of more specialty items as well. I don't buy from Angel Food because a lot of what is in the box is not something we would use or is something we can buy very cheaply at our local stores (ie. we don't buy eggs, we have chickens, pasta and spaghetti sauce are super cheap at the store, etc.). The boxes from GFFA are almost all frozen goods and we've been very happy with the quality and savings. Just thought I'd throw that out there for everyone.

Actually beans need to be combined with something like rice to be a complete protein (increases the quality of the protein)...one reason you often find them served together.

Ummm, No sites with in 50 miles, keep my eyes open to try.

What a bizarre reply! I think the poster in question was just saying that they felt the meat was not "sketchy" (as someone else said) but in fact of pretty good quality. I don't think they meant any insult to anyone at all!

Gotta agree w/ this statement. Holy crap!

Todays box was just a great. The steaks are a pleasant treat. I have been supplementing with Aldi and the deep freeze. Really cut down the food bill. I wish I did this a year ago.I also bought the senior dinners for quick meals.

I got the signature box and the fruit and veggie box. I love it and I think it really helps with the grocery bill. Between this and my new love of couponing (and the grocerygame.com) I think I can really save some money. I went to CVS the other day, spent 120, then between sales and coupons, I saved 80 bucks and got 21 bucks in extra care bucks for next time. :cool1:

I love saving money.

Next month I am gettting the after school box from Angel Food too. My kids will love all the things that are included.

Got my first box today and was pleasantly surprised as well!
A ton of stuff, both my freezer and fridge are full!!
Also our site had a bread table, with loaves of bread, rolls and such.
I was told to "Take some bread!" We also got a HUGE vaccuum sealed bag
of salad mix! We will never be able to eat all of that lettuce, I am going to bag some up and give to my neighbor!!

Can't wait for next month! If anyone finds a code like February, please post!!
