Angel Food box UPDATE March ORDER TIME 16th

Thanks for the heads up. Next month I will see the offers, try it to see if we use it up.

I do use cabbage, stuffed, Kaluski, just steamed with the Balance butter.
During the summer we have cabbage one a week....
I remember once I had that cabbage soup diet, eating it all week. It was good.

It would be nice to have some pears, plums, and the apples for baking.

I am resorting to using up what I have, stretching it out, For sure, the meals have not been the same old, same old. There have been some really tastey new mixtures.

I don't think there is a free box per one purchased. Instead the church doing the work gets a smallamount per box sold, less than $1 each. Some churches re-invest that $$ earned by buying more boxes to give away to their neediest.

a couple of months ago some church members went to our local grocery stores and priced out what we got in our $30 food packages for that month. at tops the same items would have cost me $62 and change. at wegmans a $30 box would have a cost of $58 and change. so for me in my area, it is a real savings.

additionally, it keeps me out of the grocery store and i avoid buying extra stuff i dont need. it makes menu planning easier too, and we eat more of a variety. i just plan my weekly meals out of what is in the packages rather than relying big packs of meats or sales, and then end up eating the same things. lately the items and the meats in the package are very high in quality. i would say the quality now is about the same as the grocery stores.

before angel food i would spend close to $98 a week in groceries including cat food, paper products, clening supplies etc... i now spend under $200 a month. anything that doesnt come in my packages i buy at aldis or dollar tree (cleaning products, deoderant, paper products).

i highly recommend trying angel food ministries. you really do save quite a bit of money.

Those are the same feelings I have. It keeps me out of the store for impulse buying, the meal planning this last week has been so much easier. Today I used the hamburger with a cheesy mac mix for lunch with a bag salad from Aldies. My canned veggies, celery, carrots, peppers are a savings at Aldies. DS works security there on weekends and can bring me what I need home. He likes the $1.99 pizza's.

I went from $200 a week to that a month now. I use a gal vinegar for a lot of cleaning and dollar store.,
The laundry, and cats are the challange.

The one thing in the month to keep up for meat to sub the Angel food I see is chicken, 2 more lbs hamurger, and some sea food.

The Feb box they are adding beans and rice to it and I just used my last bag of bean, and half through the Aldies rice, so that will be nice. I would love some corn meal for rolls, I have picked that up at Aldies so trying that brand out.

disneymarie,
have you ever tried making your own laundry soap. my mother makes her own soap. she gave me a 32 load bottle worth of homemade soap to try. i love it! it works just as good as tide and is very cheap and easy to make. when im done using up the laundry soap i stockpiled, i am going to start making my own soap. here's the recipe if interested. it gives you 2 gallons of liquid laundrysoap for 71 cents.

Thanks so much, I had one saved once but misplaced,
the dh started with a full body break out much like my face Rosecea was.

I have Borax, and Fels napta, thought about making it but wondered if the Fels napta would flare him. I should have him use as a hand wash a day and see what happens.

I switched to cheer senstive with a vinegar rinse and that did not help. He tried steroid pack and cream. It is not shingles, but I think maybe related to stress.

I was leary to try a new detergent, but this cheer free has not helped. He is better, but instead of stewing over job loss, he is working pt security on the weekends. I had been using lavendar vanilla, the big bottle that is less then reg. laundry detg. forgot the brand, with borax added.
It helps.

I LOVE Angel Food. Almost everything is very high quality. Right now I am eating a chicken stir-fry from a couple months ago and it is absolutely delicious. The fruits and veggies are high quality. The only thing I end up not using is the shelf-stable milk. I have never tried it. I usually give it to the food pantry.

No there is no needs based and well, the meat in the box was sketchy at best IMHO.

I respectfully disagree. The steaks, pork chops, hamburger, and chicken are on a par with what I buy at the grocery, and I pay a LOT more at the grocery. I am middle class and buy middle class stuff. Only once in over a year have I gotten what I consider subquality meat (a pork roast).

This is not a need-based service. It's there for anyone who wants to use it. YOu can buy as many boxes as you want.

We've gotten the fruit boxes several times and really like them. The fruit was very fresh.

Angel Food is a good deal IF your family will eat what is in the box. Some months we get several, some months we get none...it just depends. I don't particularly care for the quality of their red meat but love their chicken, pork, and seafood. So the months with red meat we pass, the months with chicken and pork we buy extra.

I agree 100%. I peruse the menu and if it's not stuff we like, we skip it. We don't care for breaded chicken products, and we usually don't eat frozen entrees. A local church provides our service, and they have really tried to put the word out there. Volunteers drive 60 miles to pick stuff up, but if they increase their orders to a certain amount it will be delivered so they are hoping for lots more orders. So not income related. They do accept food stamps.

Wow I don't think you did so very respectfully because a pork roast is a traditional cut of meat for some people from some cultures and trust me many people who are far above your income bracket "middle class" love and eat pork roast because its a traditional food for them.

ok wait a minute are you basing quality on the cut of meat?? I wont even touch the I am middle class comment because, ok I will who cares if your middle class (ponders posting a pole). have you looked into what that income bracket is anymore? :teacher: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21272238/ its not a lot. lol Anyhow that's not the point really is it. Lets clarify there is a huge difference in quality meat and the cut of meat because you can get a high quality cut of beef and get the same cut that hasn't been cut or stored properly and that would be low quality.

Either way if your so economically stable and find this platform to be beneath you then stop reading. obviously others who have posted were able to do so explaining what was off value and what was not without feeling the need to place themselves in a socioeconomic bracket and place a judgment on the quality of meat without really knowing what they were talking about.

I'm going to stop myself because I know I'm only going to get meaner lol lets just say unless your about to post your w2 with every post stop making assumptions about what other people have or don't have and please stop assuming others care about what you have or don't have. These are the budget boards and there here for people to help each other out and if your not helping well don't let the door slap you on the way out. that's all I can say.

For everyone else please do tell me more do you know if any of the meats veggies are natural or organic I buy into csa's during the summer and early winter but there really isn't anything in my area for late winter or spring so I'm looking for some healthy affordable options and I try to buy local so I'm supporting local economy, getting fresher veggies and not contributing extra to my carbon footprint.

And I'm sorry but I get so sick of some of the stuff I read and need to respond sometimes.

What a bizarre reply! I think the poster in question was just saying that they felt the meat was not "sketchy" (as someone else said) but in fact of pretty good quality. I don't think they meant any insult to anyone at all!

The last box I got was full of grisly tough meat that in essense was awful. when cooked it smelled almost "liver" like-- not like what steaks "should" smell like when cooked. The other things in the box were over processed coated things that were more coating than chicken.

Maybe you could use the milk for cooking or baking. I sometimes will mix up powdered milk to use for this purpose.

Evi, my friend, I have no idea what set you off. All I was saying is that I am your average joe, and I buy my food at the supermarket, and the Angel Food stuff is the same quality for a lot less money. But once I got a pork roast that was full of gristle and crappy quality. But usually they are good. Believe me, I eat plenty of pork roast.
Geez.

I think you should go back and re-read the thread.

You are attacking this poster, when all she did was defend the food offered from the AM.

Did you not understand what she wrote or the meaning of *on par?*

When does critiquing a pork roast equate with bashing a specific culture?

:sad2: Wow.

cdrn1- you were completely clear and understandable. I, too, had gotten some cuts of meat that were off iffy quality but overall loved getting the boxes and passing on things I would not use.

The last box I got was full of grisly tough meat that in essense was awful. when cooked it smelled almost "liver" like-- not like what steaks "should" smell like when cooked. The other things in the box were over processed coated things that were more coating than chicken.

hi cindy,
a couple of months ago i wasnt thrilled about the steaks either. in matter of fact when we would get our order the steaks would always be left in the freezer and i was starting to get an abundance of them. dd refused to eat them at all.

what i did was cut them up and made beef stew in the crockpot. i really didnt want to throw them out as i proabably had at least 20 steaks piled up. the stew came out great. i think i have four left in the freezer but dd is getting sick of stew. i might make a crockpot beef strogenoff with them.

in december's (i think-or it coud be november's)package we got ny strip steaks. these were fabulous. we grilled them and they were excelllent. i myself find that lately the meat has been better. my daughter and i never ate roasts or steak as regularly as we do now. dd loves it! if you still have some of those steaks try doing beef stew in the crockpot.

:lmao: Wow is there such a thing as Middle class food?? Since when did grocery stores discriminate. I'm middle class and I buy what I like to eat, not whats more expensive.
