An unusual reaction to a flu shot?

My dh got his flu shot last week and the next day he got his first ever fever blister on his lip. Within a few hours he had several ulcers inside his mouth (he's never gotten those either unless he has somehow injured the inside of his mouth ie. accidently biting it or scratching it with sharp chips or something like that) He has been a lot of pain with his mouth and he's not been able to eat very well either. I am just wondering if all of this is a reaction to his flu shot? He gets a flu shot every year but this is the first time he's had any type of complication, if indeed, this is a complication from the shot.

I agree - it's possible, but even if it is "just" a reaction, it'd be best to get him in.

DocRafiki, maybe I'm reading you incorrectly but by your post I belive you are indicating that I shouldn't ask this question of people on the boards? When someone posts something like this on the board it would seem to me to be the equivalent to walking up to a group of friends and saying "hey, Dave got his flu shot and this has happened...". I would not ask a group of friends for a professional medical opinion and I wasn't asking a professional opinion here, just wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I think that sometimes by your abrupt posts you keep people from feeling free to mention things that are going on in their everyday lives and that is unfortunate. I like to hear about people's concerns, experiences, etc. It gives me a feel for their personalities and I've found lots of great personalities on these boards.

I can't get flu shots because I am allergic to eggs. I would definately have him call the doctor about this. A second reaction another year could be VERY serious. I would be sure the doctor knows about it and maybe can check the reaction. I was allergic to eggs and didn't know it until I received a flu shot about 40 years ago. It hyper-sensitized me, and now I can't even eat eggs!

I am glad you posted about this... as I have never taken a flu shot and was thinking about it this year.. last year, I did get the flu and ran a 103 temperature for 3 days.. It was the first time ever I was that sick... so it is nice to know if there are reactions to this shot.. and if in fact that is what happened to your husband.. Please keep us informed how he is doing..

I will say this my husband and my daughter both when they get run down get this kind of virus in their mouths....I wonder if he was run down when he got the shot and it just brought that virus out.. I think you said he has never had cold sores.. hmmm.. interesting..

I know years ago my son got something called herpingina (sp), it was basically canker sores all over the inside of his mouth. You should call your Dr. right away, especially if he's been in pain for a week.

I think you may be overreacting a bit to DocRafiki -- I really think she was just suggesting asking your question to a Doctor, not telling you that you can't post it here as well.

The doctors and nurses giving shots ask that you notify your doctor with any kind of reaction.

My dh spoke with the doctor about the situation (and later with a couple of nurses in just some casual chitchat). They all told him that the flu shots this year are producing more reactions in people across the board and that this is probably a reaction also. Thankfully the ulcers have all healed up and Dave is feeling much better.

DocRafiki, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about what is appropriate for people to post on these boards.
