I found this link on another board when the question came up about the practice of some posters not typing out G-d. I know the question is often asked here and I personally found it a very intersting history.

BTW I'm trying to get into the practice of using G-d myself just because it seems respectful (to me) to those here of the Jewish faith

Happy Chanukkah to all our Jewish Dis'ers

Very interesting Sharon!! :)

I've seen that, but didn't know the significance behind it either. . I also found the part about taking the Lords name in vain to be quite interesting, and I hadn't seen that interpretation before. . .

All and all quite an enlighting and facinating read- thanks for the link Sharon!!. . and I'd like to wish a Happy Chanukkah to all our Jewish Dis'ers as well! :) :) :)

I love that site. I'm going to use it to teach my kids about Jewish holidays. It seems to have so much info there, even MP3's. I can build an entire unit study on Chanukkah just from the info there.

I knew the spell out aspect and just recently learned the pronouncation aspect when learning Hebrew.

Thanks Sha_lyn this helps me more.

Thank you, I might just take you up on that offer. I've been doing a lot of reading on religion lately. Trying to discover just what I believe in. I was "force fed" Baptist as a child and refuse to not give my children all of the options.

if you want to get more deeply into Jewish issues, try Aish Aish HaTorah is an apolitical, international network of Jewish educational centers, providing opportunities for Jews of all backgrounds to discover the wisdom and beauty of their heritage in an atmosphere of open inquiry and mutual respect. Over 25 branches in 8 countries inspire over 100,000 people each year with the meaning of being Jewish.
For 3,500 years, the Torah has inspired us to be a light unto the nations -- sharing the ideals of monotheism, social justice and universal education. We learn the Torah’s wisdom to enrich our own lives, and to share these ideas with all humanity.

Good for you, sha_lyn!! It's so good to see some people teaching their kids to choose their own beliefs instead of being forced to believe what their parents believe.

Thanks for the link.
I decided to do a search for something in Atlanta and found that the local Jewish center has a children's museum. I plan to take the kids after Christmas (you won't catch me in Atlanta traffic right now)

here is the museums link.

sounds like a wonderful place.

if you go in mid January, they'll probably be celebrating Tu B'Shvat. a mnor holiday, it's similar to Arbor Day. lots of ecology themes going on. and the tradition is to eat 15 different fruits and nuts.

Tu B'Shvat sounds interesting. I'm trying to work more natural and eco friendly ideas into our school work. This will work out great.

Briar Rose I have a question. Something that I've been wondering about for a long time. If my calendar says that the first day of Hanukkah is Saturday, does this mean that the holiday starts at sundown on Saturday or does this generally mean that this is the first full day of Hanakkah (the holiday having started at sundown on Friday)?

in a secular calendar, the holiday would have been listed as falling on Saturday, and it actually started at sundwon friday night. "it was evening, and it was morning: the first day."
