An interesting day...

Yesterday was one of those days were I was more aware of being a parent of a Spectrum Kid than usual.
For the most part, day to day life is simply that. Life. Now and then my youngest does/says something cute/remarkable, or he has a tantrum/meltdown. USually it's just us all going on with ourselves and being what we are.
Yesterday a couple things happened that made the whole life w/ autism thing just up and wave it's silly hands at me and say "Hey, lookitme!!!!"
I took the boys to the "wackyland" playground on base. It's one of those mondo-big play structures with slides, bridges, and all kinds of things that kids seem to love. Older DS ran off to do his thang, hanging out w/ some pals he knew. YOunger DS, as usual, set off at a run to go do his own thang.
A little while after we got there I became aware that a little girl was hanging around my younger DS. JUdging by the facts that she knew him by name, and by her size and apparent age I'd guess they went to same school (not the same class, I know all 8 of the kids in his class). She kept asking my son if he wanted to play hide-n-seek. DS didn't respond, heck he didn't even look at the girl. I was sorely tempted to go and intervene, but I held back. I really wanted to see how this would play out. The girl was amazingly patient w/ my lad, adding to my suspicions that she knew him. She followed him around, chattering, sliding w/ him and so on. He didn't react much to her at all. After a little bit she kinda veered off and started playing w/ some other kids. DS didn't seem to notice her departure. About ten minutes later DS comes running across the playground, making a beeline towards the little girl. He taps her on the shoulder, leans around so he can look her right in the face and says "Hiiiii!" He makes a big wave when he does this. It's almost as if it'd just suddenly occured to him that someone was interacting w/ him.
Sadly, the little girl by this time wasn't interested in playing w/ him and she just sort of brushed him off. My sweet DS stood there for a bit. I could see his face, he was looking towards me but not at me. For just a moment, the tiniest moment (had I blinked I would have missed it) he looked sad and lost. Then the moment passed and his usual expression took over. He saw me and waved with a grin and took off again.
This nearly brought me to tears.
Fast forward to late afternoon.
We decided to have a late lunch/early supper (lupper as Momma used to say). Older DS really wanted to give hamburgers another try. So we fired up the grill. DH and I had turkey burgers, and we made some hamburgers for the boys. We did't expect younger DS to do much with one but we were determined he would at least take a good lick of one, or maybe a nibble.
Older DS sat there delightedly eating his own hamburger saying (while looking at his little brother and speaking in an exaggerated tone) "Mmmmm, this is so yummy! Look at me eat my burger!"
Somewhere along the line, nonchalantly, younger DS picks up the bit o' burger we put on his plate. Without looking at it he just kind pinches a piece of it off and pops it in his mouth. I wait for the "yuck" face, but it didn't come. He put the burger down. As per routine we made nothing of it, and told Sammy "shh" before he got too excited by it. (If we get excited by something like that he tends to not do it again.) A little later he took a couple more pinches of burger. In the end he ate maybe 1/8 of the piece we gave him. But...still...
Shortly after that younger DS left the table... and then DHhad to explain to my older DS the difference between happy tears and sad tears.
Frankly, I wasn't able to at the time.

How exciting for the little things!!!! I found your story very interesting as I have twin girls (23 mths) that display some of the behaviors you were mentioning. We find delight everytime one of them does something new or responds accordingly....they definately "check-in" & out, but it's the little things you notice during the day that make life exciting.

I really think it was sweet that the little girl tried for a while with him & didn't get upset....... not a lot of kids would have been that patient.

I hope your days continue to be filled with nice little surprises!!! :flower3:

What a great day!! You have to be excited for the baby steps!! I actually got mine to try THREE blueberries last weekend, but he certainly didn't do it on his own, what a great day that would be!!! Hoping you soon can add hamburgers to your son's list of acceptable foods!!! :thumbsup2

A small followup:

We took the boys to Six Flags today. (it's nearby so we get season passes)
My younger son is a daredevil. He wanted to tide El Toro, the 2nd largest and fastest wooden coaster in 'da world! HE chose toride up front, in the veeeerrrry front seat! (his 2nd time doing so, he did it once last year, too.)
Good thing I like coasters a whole lot! Anyways, there he is, the shortest and youngest person in the front seat line. Wearing his noise reduction earmuffs. He had a blast! He was clapping and cheering when the ride was over, giving thumbs up to everyone. When we got off the ride people started clapping and saying "good job!" "Way to go!" and stuff. People came up to my DS to high-five him, he ride supervisor gave him a big ol' double high five (a hight ten?)! My DS was loving the attention!

CONGRATULATIONS

Way to go with them small steps. Soon you will be at the local burger stand with a semi truck to feed the growing boys.

Blueberries wow I do not do fruit too well. CONGRATULATIONS:surfweb::hug::hug::hug::cheer2::cheer2::grouphug:

I guess you know you are probably creating a roller coaster engineer, Cant wait to see what he designs.

Oh, yes, he's already quite the roller coaster designer. When I noticed his obsession with coasters beginning, about 2 years or so ago I bought him the Roller Coaster Tycoon games. He likes to play in the "sandbox" version where he can create all he wants w/out worrying about money and such.
He has made some verrrrry interesting rides. Sometimes he recreates (to the best that he can) rides he's been on. He's recreated El Toro reasonably well, as well as several other rides he's seen/been on. He's also made several original rides. Some of them look like they might be pretty fun, many look leathal. *shudder* He'll make roller coaster cars out of anything and zoom them all over the place. He also plays rollercoaster w/out anything but himself. He'll start at one end of the yard and kind of run slowly in a semi circle. He'll start making a clacking noise, then he finishes the turn and pauses just a moment, and then WOOSH! HE runs around every which way, screaming all the while and then he'll slow down with a "woosh" and walk back to his starting point. :)

:thumbsup2
I DEFINATELY approve of the rollercoaster ride. I can't wait till DS is big enough to ride with me because DH is a bigtime wuss when it comes to those kinds of things.;)

I take DS to the nearest park in the afternoons after school when it's warm enough and like you, I have a hard time not intervening. He's got to learn to interact and respond to people on his own. Fortunately, we seem to have a group of 4th, maybe 5th graders who also stop to play at the park on the way home from school (it's about 4 blocks from the nearest elem) who like to include DS in their games. :)
