An Inconvenient Truth...

Well, it's 56 degrees here tonite--should be 4 ft of snow on the ground & in the 10s
The kicker is this is not breaking news.
It has been so much easier to go along with the powers that be & their,"There is no global warning' garbage. Pure profit knows no common sense~

I do like the way the film is made available for free to so many venues.
Let's hope & do whatever we can to change ourselves & force big business & big government to practice common sense~

Here too.
Not a flake of snow so far this winter...much as it is a nice treat, I keep thinking it's a barometer of all that is wrong in the Environment. Today was double-digits and like a Spring day. Bulbs are pushing up all over...

We all have to make such an effort..I guess one step at a time.

Yet on the other hand, Denver is buried in snow. This is an El Nino year, we have had them before. Don't get too used to the spring weather. Nature has a way of evening itself out.

my boss at work got this movie free, and passed it along to me and my husband. We found it to be scary also, and unlike many other movies this is a very good documentary with alot of proven theories and truth!!

Have you seen the movie, Dawn?

Even the bushies are backing down and putting the Polar Bear on the threathened list due to global warming.

Even with a polar bear expert from Canada saying the Polar bear popluation is not shrinking (overall)? And that several Inuit villages asked for permission to hunt them because they were threateneing the people? He said scientists believe that the Polar bear used to be more closely related to the brown bear but because of an ice age 200,000 years ago, they adapted and evolved to what they are today.

“Global warming could cause polar bears to go extinct by the end of the century by eroding the sea ice that sustains them,” is the dire warning contained in a new report from an international group of "researchers" called the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment.

I’m not quite sure what the future holds for polar bears (search), but it doesn’t appear that any alleged manmade global warming has anything to do with it.

The report, entitled “Impacts of a Warming Arctic,” pretty much debunks itself on page 23 in the graph labeled, “Observed Arctic Temperature, 1900 to Present.”

The graph shows that Arctic temperatures fluctuate naturally in regular cycles that are roughly 40 years long. The Arctic seems currently to be undergoing a warming phase — similar to one experienced between 1920-1950 — which will likely be followed by a cooling phase — similar to the one experienced between 1950-1990.

The report’s claim that increased manmade emissions of greenhouse gases (search) are causing Arctic temperatures to rise is debunked by the same graph, which indicates that the near surface Arctic air temperature was higher around 1940 than now, despite all the greenhouse gas emissions since that time.

Also self-debunking is the report’s statement, “Since the start of the industrial revolution, the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has increased by about 35 percent and the global average temperature has risen by about 0.6 degrees Centigrade.”

So despite all the greenhouse gases emitted by human activity over a period of 200 years — we’re supposed to worry, and even panic, about a measly 0.6 degree Centrigrade rise in average global temperature during that time?

Even if such a slight temperature change could credibly be estimated, it would seem to be well within the natural variation in average global temperature, which in the case of the Arctic, for example, is a range of about 3 degrees Centigrade. Remember, global climate isn’t static — it’s always either cooling or warming.

Even though manmade greenhouse gas emissions and warmer temperatures don’t seem to be a problem in the Arctic according to their own data, the researchers nevertheless blamed them for causing supposed 15 percent declines in both the average weight of adult polar bears and number of cubs born between 1981 and 1998 in the Hudson Bay region.

The 1999 study in the science journal Arctic that first reported apparent problems among the Hudson Bay polar bear population (search) suggested that their condition may be related to the earlier seasonal break-up of sea ice on western Hudson Bay —a phenomenon that seems to correlate with the 1950-1990 Arctic warm-up. But, as mention previously, the 1950-1990 Arctic warming period seems to be part of a natural cycle and not due to manmade emissions of greenhouse gases.

Moreover, the notion of a declining polar bear population doesn’t square well available information.

A Canadian Press Newswire story earlier this year reported that, in three Arctic villages, polar bears “are so abundant there’s a public safety issue.” The local polar bear population reportedly increased from about 2,100 in 1997 to as many as 2,600 in 2004. Inuit hunters (search) wanted to be able to kill more bears because they are “fearsome predators.”

An aerial survey of Alaskan polar bears published in "Arctic" (December 2003) reported a greater polar bear density than previous survey estimates dating back to 1987.

If polar bears really are getting skinnier as the 1999 study suggested, it may actually be due to an increased population subsisting on the same level of available food. After all, the harvesting of Alaskan polar bears has been limited by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (search) and international agreements since 1972.

The Arctic Climate Impact Assessment report has spurred a new round of calls for a clamp-down on carbon dioxide emissions. Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., told the Associated Press that the “dire consequences” of warming in the Arctic underscore the need for their proposal to require U.S. cuts in emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases.

Fortunately their call will likely get a chilly response from President Bush, who reiterated through a spokesman last weekend that he continues to oppose the international global warming treaty known as the Kyoto Protocol (search).

You are 100% correct, Nature does have a way of evening things out and when she does, it ain't gonna be pretty. Can this winter's weather or lack thereof be blamed on global warming? Yes. Can it also be blamed on El Nino? Yes. Probably a bit of both. Fact of the matter is where I live if it was Global warming we would actually have more snow.

The point is that global warming is a real issue and we have opportunitys to move in another direction. None of us should have our head in the sand.

"We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children."

Yes I believe global warming is real but, no, I don't think this winter's weather has much to do with it. I've seen this before... several times. I've also seen Quincy Bay (just outside of Boston) freeze solid back in the late 50's. My father told me that in the 30's Boston harbor froze completely over. He was able to walk from Wollaston beach (for you Massachusetts folks) all the way to Boston on the ice. :scared1: He also said when he got older that he thought that might have been one of the dumbest things he ever did. :rotfl:

These blips in the weather happen and are indicative of nothing much except balancing out the averages. On the other hand, the melting of the polar ice caps and the rise in sea levels are a much more serious concern.

I read the book and also an ad for the movie was shown prior to seeing an AEROSMITH concert.:confused3

Yea...teens were practically LTAO at Gore. He talks so slow....they need a better spokesperson. I know it is "his baby" but if they had someone inspiring, the message may get heard better.

However...I don't think it can be stopped, really.:(

I moved from NJ to MA almost 10 years ago and it was start of El Nino (it was the first time I'd ever heard of that phenomenon), and this is my 10th winter here. I vividly remember that the first few winters here were *very* mild. Hardly any snow, and not very cold. And the snow that we did get didn't last long, and didn't amount to very much. Now the last few winters have been the opposite; 2 winters ago we got over 4' of snow at one time, and then a foot of snow would melt but then another foot would fall, so we always had 4' of snow on the ground.

And here on the south shore, we DID get a couple of inches of snow in early December that lasted for a few days.

If this is indeed another El Nino, then I believe that that's what's causing this. I'm sure that Global Warming is a valid concern, but not necessarily what's causing our very mild winter here in the north east.

I think the greatest thing about he movie is that it's not all doom and gloom...that here are easy ways for us to make major steps towards easing the potentially catastrphic results of global warming if we just take the time to do them.

Exactly!!!
In the summer we run the air conditioning at night to bring the temp down and then close the blinds(I follow the sun) during the day. It makes a HUGE difference on our bill.
We also have chaged all of our lights with conpact flourescents.
There is lots that people can do in there own home if they want to.

Even the bushies are backing down and putting the Polar Bear on the threathened list due to global warming.

There were 5000 polar bears in the 1950s now there are 25,000. Their numbers are increasing. While they look cute and cuddly, they are the largest and most aggressive land mammal. I am glad they don't live in my neighborhood.

If we should all be so worried about global warming and the "dire consequences" than we should drastically change our lifestyle. If it does mean the survival of our very existence. Shouldn't we start we Disney World then? How do you get there? Plane, train, or automobile. It really is an unnecessary trip that does nothing but pour more pollution into the air. What about the power it takes to light those parks, ride the rides, and move people about? I am sure Disney transportation pollutes alot. And it is all unnecessary. We are destroying the environment to have a little fun. Fireworks must pollute the air some, leading to a warmer climate. No matter how little .... every small change we can make is a move in the right direction. How many trees must be cut down to feed those fast past machines. Trees that could be used to clean the air are instead used so we don't have to wait in line. Don't get me started on the amount of wasted water at WDW. From the figures that squirt you while you are walking through the parks to the water parks themselves. The list is endless. I'll bet we could lower the earth's temperature by at least a point if we raze WDW. So for the global warming people out there: are there post on these boards talking about how much you enjoy WDW and bragging about the great airfare you got to get down there? If so, than don't make me feel guilty for driving my truck, heating my house, watching tv, taking long showers, and using toilet paper.

Now who is being an extremist and scaring people. This is ridiculous. Yes, and we all could live by candle light and walk two hours to work every day. That would be ridiculous, too. There are simple things every one could do to help and it wouldn't make a dent in their lifestyle.
