Amount for Maid Service Tips?

as an ex housekeeper, I seldom tip. unless I am on a cruise.

that being said, I will occasionally leave a trinket. I am a crafter and often make little goodie bags or decorate packaging. one that always seems to get the most feedback is the covered Tic Tac containers. chocolate tends to melt, not everybody chews gum and many people don't do other sugary candies and what not. but everybody likes fresh breath!

takes no time to make, almost no room in the luggage( and once gone leaves room for souvenirs) and I enjoy making them. I leave one maybe every other day or so. oh and my own personal perversion: absolutely NO Mickey themed stuff at all. I figure they see enough of that at work as it is.

It's just the two of us and we really pick up after ourselves.. we make the bed, hang the towels, etc. our room tends to be the
easy' one that takes 10 minutes and the most effort is plugging in the vacuum cleaner.

We tip $5 a day in an envelope marked for housekeeping.

It's important to be obvious about the fact that you intend the money for the housekeeper. There could be big trouble if someone left money out and the housekeeper mistakenly took it thinking that it was a tip for her.

It doesn't have to be in an envelope, heck it could have a post it note attached, but be sure to label the tip for housekeeping.

Also be sure to leave a tip for each day as opposed to one big one at the end of your stay. You may not have the same housekeeper each day and one tip at the end might miss the person who did the lions share of the work.

Also be aware that if you really want to say thank you to your housekeeper in a big way contact Guest Services.

email wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com

or send a letter to:
Walt Disney World Guest Communications
Executive Offices
Post Office Box 10040
Lake Buena Vista, Florida 32830-0040

When you write or email, please include your name, address, phone number and email address. It would really help if you had the name of the cast member and the date and location that you had experienced excellent customer service.

A quick email to Guest Services really sends the message that you had a positive experience with ANY Cast Member.

You can also use this same method of communicating to report problems with cast members, but you probably should do that right away with a manager!

I hope that helps!

At OKW there was a card on the hall shelf about maid service. I left 5 dollars a day. I think a dollar a day per person is the protocol. Fives are just easier.

As others have said, no right or wrong in leaving a tip. I do like to leave them daily though in case it's not the same cleaning person for the entire stay. We are a family of 3 and tip $3-$5 per day.

we do $1 per day per person.. in envelopes all Disney'd out.. we have 2 rooms with 4 people in each so $4 per room!

We tip $5/day, leave it each day. We do it because I have found that if you tip the housekeeper, you are much less likely to find something "missing" from your room!

I normally tip the same as most people have posted for housekeeping, but now that I'm part of DVC, we don't get daily services. Do people in DVC tip if they stay long enough to have housekeeping services?

I was just wondering the same thing :confused3

:scared1::confused:really?
We do leave tips, but that's kind of disturbing...
Has this happened to you at Disney?

When we stayed DVC before we tipped.

We plan to tip on our upcoming trip to the CBR. I look at the cost of the room tip as a tiny part of our big budget. If the $5 a day is every a make or break for the trip, we have no business going at that time. I know it isn't expected, but who doesn't like to shine a little sunshine into someone's day :goodvibes

we also tip daily. We are a family of 5 but so far they have all been babies when we have went. I do think that is a lot more to get around than the average room. We have left 5 dollars a day and I have felt that may not be enough! Glad to see it is the norm!

Just a few thoughts. Housekeepers at WDW make in the neighborhood of $13-15 an hour. If they clean 15 rooms, and there is $3 left in each room (average), they are making an addtl $45 a day. And that's an addtl $225 a week based on a 5 day work week. In addition to that $13 or so an hour.

Is it expected? I'm sure there are a lot of housekeepers that look forward to finding tips each day. But, management will tell you that housekeeping is not considered a 'tippable' position. If you want to leave a tip, fine. Go for it.

BUT...I will not be concerned about something 'missing' from my room if I havn't tipped, nor am I concerned about the room being clean to a lesser degree if there was no tip that day. I am more than happy to reward over the top service with a tip. But I refuse to tip someone who is getting paid a decent paycheck for emptying my trash can, wiping down my vanity, and possibly restocking toiletries. I make the beds each day....I know, I'm on vacation. But, that's just what I do while everyone else is getting ready. We tend to be very neat so not much needs to be done.
I have left my towels hanging up in order to reuse them..housekeeping takes them away and replaces them. So much for being 'green'.

I have had towel animals left, I have returned to the room to find my dd's 'stuff' rearranged by housekeeping. Once, at Pop, we returned to our room to find that we had been named Pop Housekeeping Family of the Day...chocolates on our pillows, turn down service. Freaked me out a bit. But, there was no tip..we had just checked in earlier that day.

So....if you get really nice service from housekeeping, do your housekeeper a favor. Mention it to management. Call housekeeping and tell them. Write a note and give it to the front desk for the permanant file. That will last a lot longer than $35 in tips. Of course, you can still tip if you wish to. I just refuse to be held hostage to tipping.

As far as staying DVC goes, it depends on how long I'm there for. If I'm there for just a few days, and I have found the villa to be in very clean shape..then I might leave $5 at the end of my stay. For longer stays, where I get trash and towel service and possibly a full cleaning, again...it depends. I have had housekeepers who were so nice and friendly while others have merely glared at me. It was as if I were interrupting their life or something by saying hello. Man. But, if someone does a really good job and is friendly to me in return to my overtures, then yes, I may very well leave a tip. But I do tend to favor leaving a note for their boss to see....I think most people like to be acknowledged for doing a good job. And a note in their file does just that.

I totally doubt they are making anywhere near $12 an hr. Disney does not pay their workers that well. In fact I am going to call and inquire what they are paid an hr.

You know, I always tip for tipped positions, but I was under the impression that mousekeepers were not considered a tip position. I do know for a fact that if anyone in a non-tipped role receives a tip, they must give it to a manager. I am going to ask next time we go because I want our mousekeeper to have a tip, but I don't want to tip if she/he doesn't get to keep it!
