Ok, so I just went back to try and watch it in broad daylight. I was pretty far into it. Then the mom was walking with a laundry basket and went by a little girl sitting on a chair. I don't know what I saw, but I freaked and closed it. Maybe I'll try again later. Why do I torture myself??
I went to school with one of the girls who was killed by her brother, they went to our church. I also knew someone who knew the Cromartys who bought the house. The story is bogus. There were lots of small details that were simply wrong.
It is really a shame that the families tragidy was twisted into a horror film....
That said..I also read the book
...dreaded looking at the clock when I woke up in the middle ofthe night and a few years ago when a swarm of large flys kept appearing in my one window...
It was a hoax, but the book was scarier than hell. I'll probably see the remake although I will have problems having sympathy for Melissa George who plays the wife. Alias fans will know why
Living on Long Island you had to go to the house on a date. I used to go with my boyfriend and then would sleep without a light on for a week. Now my 18 year old DD goes to the house with her boyfriend and does the exact same thing. What a family we are!
I had heard it was a hoax too. I can totally understand why the people who bought the real house changed the windows, they were so scary.
I changed alarm clocks when I was younger because it has red numbers and 2 little red dots to say the alarm was set, it reminded me of that movie for a long time. I still don't like the red alarm clocks.
the remake looks scary, we will prob see it.
I love scary books, but I don't like scary movies very much (go figure). I've never seen The Amityville Horror, but I did know the story. I didn't know it was a hoax! That's horrible.

six bedroom Colonial with a swimming pool and its own boathouse, located in the Long Island community of Amityville. The purchase price was reportedly eighty-thousand dollars
I lived in NY most of my life (now in NJ) i spent many hours driving through Amityville years ago.
where is the house if you still remeber?
i still think about it and wonder if we ever found the right one
or was it the beer??
I have no idea what the actual address is, but the house looks entirely different now anyway. I think the new owners got rid of those distinctive windows....
I know the address, but same reason stands as 20 years ago when people would come to the gas station for directions. I won't give it, but I can give you explicit directions to Nassau Shores and you'd probably think you'd found the house, lol!
It's a nice, quiet residential neighborhood. Honestly, if you drove down the block now, you wouldn't believe that the house at the stated address was 'the' house. Different windows, and last I saw it, it was painted blue.
80k in '74? That sounds about right for a waterfront house. Parents bought a house in '72 and our house was 44k for a 5 bedroom in a south shore LI town.
I saw it at a sleepover when I was 14. We of course watched it in the middle of the night. About 10 minutes after it ended (when we were all jumpy and stupid) we went to the kitchen to get snacks and someone started trying to break in the back door. I get chills just thinking about that night. The father of the girl whose house it was, was a cop and went running after the guys trying to break in. Never caught them.
BTW I am 30 now and still hate to see the time when I have to get up with one of the girls. If it's 3:15 I'll wait a few minutes. And I never ever look outside for fear of seeing those glowing eyes. I'm such a moron.
My Dh and I met Mr Lutz last year at a convention. The actual movie was very "enhanced" compared to what actually did happen. After all you have to have something to sell a movie. The book was also enhanced quite a bit. We did see several photos of the house and of photos taken by special cameras set up after they left. One of the photos looks like a little boy standing in the doorway. (Kinda creepy) He and his wife divorced and she is/was very ill. (I can't remember if he said she was dying or had died from some rare disease.) We also spoke with someone that visited after they left the house. She took care of selling all the belonging if I remember correctly. They left everything and only had a very few items shipped to them everything else was sold. She agreed there was a presence in the house. As far as what really happened...from what I remember .... his daughter spoke with Jody, the flies and wierd smells, he heard drums wake him up in the middle of night, people did get sick when they visited, it was cold all the time. What did not happen....blood did not run down the walls, the red room existed but was not claimed to be an entrance to anywhere, the doors did not blow out.
He won't talk about his children or how they feel. He said that was up to them and it was not his place to talk for them or about them. I can't think of anything else right now. He was a very nice guy but seemed kind of shy to me. His friend talked more then he did. I wish we would have had more time to talk to him but we had other things scheduled and had to leave.
Overall, I guess I would say, as with anything Hollywood, alot of the movie and the book was dramatically enhanced.
