So I saw the previews for the new movie and it said based on a true story. Is it and what is the "true story"?!

The people are real. The incidents are real. It happened back in the 70's in New Jersey (or New York).

Plot Summary for
The Amityville Horror (1979)
Based on a true story that was claimed by writer Jay Anson, The Amityville Horror is about a large house on the coast of Long Island where newly weds George and Kathy Lutz and their three children move into the house that they hope will be their dream house but it ends up in terror. Not aware that a murder took place in the house several years back, George and Kathy turn to their family priest Father Delaney who believes the house is haunted and performs an exorcism on the house. But the evil spirit in the house causes him to become blind and makes him very ill. George and Kathy with the help of another priest Father Bolen and a police detective they face the fears of the house, but not knowing the spirit is planning to possess George and then the children...

When the book came out in the 70's, it was supposedly all true.

In the years since then, there have been many disputes over how true the events really were. I am not sure if the book and movie were proven to be a sham, but I know it put doubt in my mind.

BTW, if you liked to be scared, read the book! The movie (1980) was scary enough, but didn't do the book justice, IMO.

I can't wait to see the remake. I'm from Long Island, where the murders occured. On one of our very first dates Dh took me to see the house....I knew he was a keeper!

Allegedly after only spending 28 days in their new home, the Lutz family went fleeing one night from this house that was haunted and/or posessed by demons. Prior to the Lutz family buying the house, the DeFeo family lived...and were killed by their oldest son.

Many people believe the Lutz family put on a hoax because they couldn't afford their new mortgage.

Google Amityville Horror and you'll get a several sites about the Lutz/DeFeo families and the events surrounding the murders and hauntings.

Hmmm...I think I will google it in the DAYLIGHT so I don't freak myself out LOL. The true story movies are 10X scarier to me!

My SIL grew up in Amityville, NY on the same street where this happened. After it happened they moved here to NJ. We never bring it up, as my SIL and her siblings still have a very hard time with this.

I lived near it, worked a mile away from the 'house'. SIL lived two blocks away (it was on Ocean Avenue, she was on Richmond).

That said...Ronald DeFeo murdered his whole family in the house in '73. The people who bought the house afterwards claimed it was posessed, then the Cromartys (also owners of a major racetrack on LI) purchased it.

The way it's shown in the movies make it look like it's this huge plot of land that the house is sitting on. Nope, typical LI waterfront house, maybe 12 feet between houses. The people who bought it in the late 80's/early 90's changed the quarter round windows, you wouldn't even know it was 'the house'.

DH and I both worked in a Hess gas station a mile from the house, on the border of Amityville. Now, we both knew where the house was, both knew people who lived in the neighborhood. As a result, when the car loads of joyriders would come ask for directions to the "Horror House", we'd both send them on wild goose chases down the various waterfront neighborhoods of Massapequa and Massapequa park! Took great pleasure in doing it, too!

The book scared the poop out of me when I read it. I lived in a basement apartment then and my windows had semi sheer drapes on them. Of course I'm reading and when I put the book down I see 2 red lights in my window...jumped and my heart skipped more then a few beats...until I realized it was only a car backing into it's parking spot!

Man, I should of even opened this thread tonight, I get myself all worked up with horror movies! hehe
That was the first "scary" movie I've ever seen! We watched it at about 2:30am after prom last year! I was all curled up in my boyfriends lap scared!! Afterwards, i didnt think it was *that* scary! As we were leaving out friends house, we had to drive down a dark scary, small road in the woods! I was so scared!!
I didnt know tha the movie was based on actual facts...interesing!!
Are they coming out with a new one?

I forgot one thing....

GET OUT!!!!!
;)

:rotfl: I loved Eddie Murphy's standup routine about that and how if black people heard a voice say that......goodbye.

Also, I don't remember the time now (so don't anybody remind me!), but George Lutz supposedly woke up every night at the same time. I remember after seeing that movie and if I'd wake up in the night and go to look at the clock I can remember thinking please please please don't let it say that time.

Oh, also I used to freak out anytime I saw more than 2 flies gathered in one place. :teeth:

So hoax or not, would you (anyone) buy a house where a murder occured? There's not a chance in heck I would. I watch all those "unexplained" weird but allegedly true events and I just wouldn't chance it.

I do believe it is a hoax... There are two visions of the book. The first had far less supernatural activity in it..The second has much added...No,I'd never live in a house where murders occured

They filmed the first movie in Toms River, NJ at a house that looked very much like the actual one. It was right down the street from my DH's apartment when we were engaged. I met James Brolin at a restaurant one night when I was down there.

I had no idea that they're doing a re-make. I'll probably watch it with a pillow in front of my face. :scared1: :scared1:

they had to change the address of the house because of all the thrill seekers.

even the "history" of the area is fudged in the Lutz's book.
