Amish Romance Novels

This thread is just wrong.:scared1:

I've actually read a fair amount of Amish books. I think it is refreshing not to have to read about sex, violence and have a ton of swearing in a book. The stories are well written. Most are a fast read for me, but they are engaging.

Sorry you all seem to feel you have to make fun of something that is different from your world.

How is it that a thread whose title makes clear that it deals with BOTH Amish and books has made it well onto page 2 without a post from our resident book lover and Amish researcher, C Ann? :confused3 It seems custom made for her doesn't it?:goodvibes

I love the term Bonnet Rippers:rotfl2: So, is the market aimed at all at Amish to read the books, or just at those fascinated by the Amish?

oh please. I belong to entire message boards that are solely dedicated to making fun of some of the crap I read. When it comes to any sort of Pop Fiction - but especially Romance, mocking it is over half the fun.

That is one of the reasons I find many young adult novels to be really goo. Many have good plot lines and character development and do not rely on "Shock value" or sex to sell themselves (though some still have that going on too--and I am not opposed to it anywhere when it fits but so many stories seem to add it in gratuitously just to sell things).

lol, so are vampires books. Geez, they are everywhere.

Not a fan of either.

hhhmmm...Maybe I should write an Amish vamire romance novel... incredibly dull AND exciting at the same time.

Rolling this around in my head, it's really hard for me to think of Amish and romance. About 30 minutes from my place is an amish town. I've been there a few times. The people nice and decent, enjoy the wood workings done there, but the things that sticks out in my mind when visiting the town is the strong smell of horse manure. Not a whole lot of romance in that!

I'm 99.9% sure that the market is aimed at "English" who find the Amish way of life "romantic" and certainly NOT at the Amish. I'm happy to make fun of anyone who wants to totally over-romanticise a difficult way of life but lacks the personal religious conviction to live that life themselves or research the negatives properly.
.
Jokes -funny - laughter - try it :thumbsup2

This. And, seriously, no real Amish person will ever read this thread or be hurt by it. They eschew computers, electricity and all mod cons.

Top ten signs your Amish teen is in trouble…

10. Sometimes stays in bed until after 5 a.m.

9. In his sock drawer, you find pictures of women without bonnets.

8. Shows up at barn raisings in full “KISS” makeup.

6. His name is Jebediah, but he goes by “Jeb Daddy.”

5. Defiantly says, “If I had a radio, I’d listen to rap.”

4. You come upon his secret stash of colored socks.

3. Uses slang expression, “Talk to the hand, ‘cause the beard ain’t listening.”

Given how many Amish children there are.........even the horse manure must not stop the romance.

Is your sense of humor broken? Seriously.

I make fun of all kinds of things, including stuff I LIKE. Nothing is off limits AFAIAC. You should hear me get on a tear about George Lucas, or GI Joe.

Within the county I live in are the 3rd and the 6th largest Amish settlements in the country. I mean no disrespect to the Amish at all. I've been to their homes, to their stores, my children have taken swimming lessons with other Amish children, my youngest DS has classes in public school with Amish children, I homeschool my oldest DS and there are Amish children and their mom in our homeschool co-op. I haven't checked it in a while but there used to be an Amish man on our county's sex offender registry.

So ... when I hear Amish romance novels .... :lmao:

Like I said, I mean no disrepect all, but the scruffy facial hair, dirty fingernails, bowl haircuts, it doesn't scream "romance" to me. I think it'd be interesting to read one just to see how the Amish are portrayed though.

What I really don't understand is the romanticizing of their religion. :confused3

Could the movie Witness be considered a sorta, kinda Amish romance??

You know I'd forgotten all about that movie. I suppose that would be sorta, kinda be considered an Amish romance. It's been so long since I've seen it. The movie, not Amish romance. :lmao:

ETA: Not that I've seen any Amish romance. They don't ever have any PDAs. Not even the teenagers.

I immediately thought of this video when I saw this thread too! How an Amish woman can go about her daily work without stabbing herself with a straight pin is a mystery to me. The pins must also act as a big deterent to cuddling or hugging for courting couples.

Waiting for C. Ann's input here. She knows a lot about the Amish.:)

I think C.Ann isn't taking the bait...... ;)

Do you think the thread is bating her in some way? Of course my mind jumped right to her, but there is a current article in Newsweek about it, and most people would not think this could be a controversial topic (though the poster who is offended by the joking around seems to be trying to make it so) so I think it happens to just be a thread about a current news article which also might happen to interest a poster who has been very vocal about her like of all things Amish recently. I'd really love to hear what C. Ann thinks of the novels and if she has read any--since she is, perhaps, in a better position than many of us to judge if anything in them rings true or not just by virtue of all her research.
Anyway, shortly after I posted wondering why she had not chimed in yet I noticed she was no longer posting on a number of threads she had been active on, things had gotten heated between her and another poster on one thread so perhaps she is just taking a break from the DIS all together for a day or two (and I hope that would be all it is, tempers were really flying for a while and I think some posts may have been deleted)--I feel the need to do that once in a while too.

Sorry I love them! I like that they are quick reading and clean. But some of your comments make me :lmao:

99.9% may be way off. Google: Amish Facebook and you will find that a lot of Amish young adults are experimenting with the internet these days.
