Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

For me, a holiday is taking time off. A vacation is when I actually go somewhere during my holiday.

But when I really think about it, I don’t use either words very often. I might say something like, “I’m going to Disney on the March break.”
:goodvibes We say we’re “going on holidays” when we’re planning a trip, which requires taking “vacation time” from work. Days off, like Canada Day or Christmas, are referred to on the calendar as national or provincial holidays.

Husband and son will watch the game have no idea who they want to win. Usually check out the commercials the next day if they say there are good ones.

We usually say we are going away never vacation or holidays. How I would love to say that again soon…lol

We also say going away instead of going on vacation or holiday. Going to the cottage… Going to WDW.. or heading away for the weekend.. etc.
Holidays are things like Christmas or Thanksgiving or even long weekends. 😊

Surprised you haven’t heard of it before. I think if you live near historical areas that were involved with the Revolution, they probably do more activities concerning that day. :confused3

Just saw this and was suprised. Lived in Hudson Valley my whole 39 years and have never, ever heard of this day. It is not celebrated in any area around me where I grew up or where I now live. And there are tons of places related to historical moments.

Historical societies might promote it more, SAR/DAR maybe as well. I’m not saying it’s big like the 4th of July. Some areas used to throw some historical reenactment balls for example. Other areas just sometimes mention it as a one liner on the news and point out a historic site.

Also, Thanksgiving now takes a bigger holiday presence as well. It would be cool if NY could throw a grand 18th century ball around the holiday. It could be educational, fun, and an immersive history experience. Many people flock to the famous ones (like the one in Paris) but NYS could do several affordable ones though out the state so many could participate. :confused3

I do say - I am going on holidays (meaning my holidays). Or I am going on holiday down south. I had a great holiday.

All mean vacation (at times just time off). I personally use the word holiday way more than vacation for going away. Probably 80% of the time. Heck I hardly use vacation, if it is not holiday/holidays, it is going away.

Vacation all I ever wanted....@Disneylover99. Grade nine, how 'bout you?

:goodvibes And speaking of holidays, any local news on opening public venues back up? I got a fabulous Christmas gift of a trip to Toronto and Raptors tickets (March 17 v.s LA). I'm on pins-and-needles to see if they go back to full capacity March 14, which is the more recent word we've heard. What with everything else going on, it's kind of fallen off the radar screen.

I’m probably going to skip halftime this year. Nothing against the performers, I’m just not a fan of their music. Looking forward to a bengals win though. :-)

Can. Not. Wait.

In the city, city of Compton.....
Although I do not think Tupac/2pac has special come back powers.
I am positive they will have him on screen though.
(Boo! Dr. Dre only did a tiny bit of California Love. Sad face.)

Do not quote me. I haven't talked to Dougie in ages. But I believe we have gone 50% in most places and full opening just in time for your trip - and his My Friends/Yawhoos election trail speeches.

Lakers? Clippers? I am assuming Lakers. I could just not be so lazy and look.

@Buzz Rules … the date may mean something for the NYC area but for the balance of the state it doesn’t hold that much significance, if any at all. After the Battle of Johnstown in October 1781 the British and loyalists fled from most of the upstate area leaving it in the control of the Patriots. Actually Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga has more significance in the upstate area than the British exit from NYC in 1783.

Ford just said this morning we should be 100% March 1st at sport, concerts and theatre. Feb 17 it is 50% for these above but 100 % for restaurants, gyms and cinemas .

Masks will still be needed.

There is hope for you yet! Unless our hospitals start to go crazy again.

Canadians, are you eating anything particularly Canadian today?

Any answer I come up with is dirty soooo

MB is going full open March 15. It’s so stupid. We’ll be back in lockdown by summer.
