Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

However, I'd like to contribute an American Poppy tribute to this thread: this is the entrance bridge of the US WW1 Museum in Kansas City:
The Museum did do a wonderful poppy projection a couple years back but we missed it :( We forgot to make sure to go Downtown for it but our friends did and said it was just breathtaking to see it (pic taken from google)

Interesting! Where does rice grow in California? I thought the entire state was arid without irrigation.

It's a desert, but the source of water is mostly snowmelt. California is the largest state in the US by agricultural revenue, and the vast majority is dependent on irrigation. Farming typically uses more than 80% of the water in California.

If you ever saw the movie Chinatown, it was about Los Angeles acquiring water from the Owens Valley. The environment there actually had quite a bit of farming, but without the water the soil turned saline and wasn't really suited for much beyond livestock. The largest federal water project in the United States is the Central Valley Project, which stores water in several reservoirs including Shasta Lake.

Extending 400 miles through central California, the Central Valley Project (CVP) is a complex, multi-purpose network of dams, reservoirs, canals, hydroelectric powerplants and other facilities. The CVP reduces flood risk for the Central Valley, and supplies valley domestic and industrial water. It also supplies water to major urban centers in the Greater Sacramento and San Francisco Bay areas, as well as producing electrical power and offering various recreational opportunities. In addition, the project provides water to restore and protect fish and wildlife, and to enhance water quality.
Construction of major CVP facilities began in 1938 with breaking of ground for Shasta Dam on the Sacramento River near Redding in Northern California. Over the next five decades, the CVP was expanded into a system of 20 dams and reservoirs that together can hold nearly 12 million acre-feet.
The CVP has long-term agreements to supply water to more than 250 contractors in 29 of California’s 58 counties. Deliveries by the CVP include providing an annual average of 5 million acre-feet of water for farms; 600,000 acre-feet of water for municipal and industrial uses (enough water to supply about 2.5 million people for a year); and water for wildlife refuges and maintaining water quality in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Rice is mostly grown in the Central Valley. There are granaries up and down the Central Valley. And yes it takes a lot of water.

And when there is a drought like now, the CVP finds it self in the position of being obligated by water delivery agreements, legislation and court orders to deliver more water than it has.

Lots of sports games happening in America and Canada today. What is everyone looking forward too?

No, we are in the same division (the West) so we will meet a team from the East. Winnipeg is first in the West and it's not even close.
:rotfl2:Ah, God bless the CFL - the most unimaginative league in the history of sports. There are only 9 teams in the league and of all the possible names/words in the English language, two of them used the same one (Saskatchewan Rough Riders and Ottawa Rough Riders). After a hiatus of some years, the Ottawa team regrouped and when it did, it couldn't even think up a name; they go by their jersey colours - the Ottawa RedBlacks. The team from Edmonton became more socially sensitive two years ago and changed their name from the Eskimos to the Elks. Why the Elks? Because they still wanted to use their same stylized entwined double-E logo. And Winnipeg's team, the Blue Bombers, couldn't even come up with an actual logo. They've just printed a big, block-letter W on their shirts and called it good. :rotfl:

Your CPL has only 8 teams, some with very unimaginative names. How many on this board could name their local team? 🤣 :duck::rolleyes1

My dislike was tongue in cheek, just in case someone thought I was really mad

Why pick on the Raps? They're your team too. :flower3: Funny that you mention it though. Last season, due to Covid, the Raps had to homecourt in Tampa. It must have been tough in lots of ways but sometimes you could actually see the bench wincing as they got boo'd by what theoretically should have been their home crowd. :sad1: Lots of chatter at the time about what effect that had on the ultimately woeful season.

They tried expansion, starting with the Sacramento Gold Miners.
