Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Since the Olympics has been talked about a few times throughout this thread y'all planning on watching it come February? I think it's too early to know if there will be similar covid protocols. I just saw an ad on a commercial the other day for it here, the first I've seen so talk seems to be gearing up for it here. Is there talk about any athlete issues up in Canada? I don't think I've heard of too many down here.

I'll be watching, always do. I spent a good part of my professional life working in our amateur sport system before I semi-retired last spring. I never managed to be part of Team Canada but I had hoped to one day as part of the mission staff but I think that ship has sailed. I don't recall hearing about any athletes having issues about going. All of our athletes and support staff do need to be fully vaccinated and I don't think anyone has balked at that to this point.

As I said. Try being an American living in Ontario. It’s a continuous thing with one upping Americans. Almost any time we are out and they hear my accent. It’s become embarrassing for my Canadian wife. There are certain family members I stay clear of. Any opportunity they have to say something disparaging against the USA they will. And forget trying to advance too far at a job in Ontario. They won’t allow it typically. ( I’m sure someone here will prove me wrong with an example). I hear out west it’s not as bad. But I don’t know as I’ve never been there.

Sorry to hear that you seem to judge all of Canada because of a few people in your family.

As far as watching the Olympics, I definitely will. I always like seeing rivalry games between the USA and Canada. Before the Olympics though, I’m looking forward to the Canada vs USA WCQ in Canada this January. We still need a name for these rivalry matches, so I personally go with the 49th parallel derby. Thoughts?

That sounds quite interesting :) Any details about it you'd like to share?

I've coached volleyball for about 30 years, including 8 years at the university level. I've participated in our Canada Games (think Olympic-type event but for athletes that are not at the level yet) 8 times, 3 as a coach and 5 as part of the support team. I've also spent a lot of time working on sport policy, both for the province I live in as well as our national sport policy.

Wow that's a long time to coach for sure

So is this seen as any sort of stepping stone to higher level of competition or is it just a level on its own meant to stay that way? Sounds like either way there's a level of prestige there.

It is a bit of both actually. Summer games are bigger than winter games, much like the Olympics. I think the number is between 30 to 40% move on to the Olympics or pro sport. Hockey players such as Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon competed at the Canada Games as did Rick Nash in basketball. Other top athletes include people like Andre DeGrasse (track), Russel Martin (baseball), Jennifer Jones (curling) also were at the Canada Games. For a lot of other, they move on to compete at the university/college level and for the rest it would probably be the pinnacle of their athletic career.

Turns out, yes and it is also today.

I must say I so miss a good crunchy dill pickle.
I couldn't find it when I googled but I did come up with this;

In addition to our apparent respect for the pickle, we also recognize tons of other interesting stuff such as Workers Mourning Day (April 28), National Fiddling Week (in May), Hunting, Trapping & Fishing Heritage Day (in September) and Day of the Girl Child (October 11). The most interesting ones I found were Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval (July 28) and Holodomor Memorial Day (in November).

I honestly don't know. Personally, I'm leaning towards no and would like to see our national team boycott as well, although I realize that is a huge individual sacrifice for the athletes and very unlikely to be federally mandated. There are significant geopolitical conflicts between Canada and the CCP, as well as with many other free and democratic countries. The human rights issues alone in China go without saying. I think Beijing is the last place on earth that should have been awarded an Olympic Games.

I feel that way about other sports Committees too when it comes to selection of places. FIFA and Qatar is one I can immediately think of but there are other Committees and selections past and future too.
I may be more ideological than the average person about these things but dang, where is the principle in the decision-making? :sad2:

Money. The England and USA were supposed to be awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectfully. Russia and Qatar bribed FIFA for the bids. To make up for it, North America was awarded the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA in particular had more the bribing issues. Even before knowing that I remember my first thought was Qatar is in no way suited IMO climate-wise. Then I found out why.

But in other situations it's a good point to look at why certain things are held in places. I do think sometimes it's a political "keep the peace" sort of way like "we'll pretend to ignore because of xyz", I thought you brought up a good point about human rights issues.

I would live in the States in an instant, if I could be in New York City.
My husband's uncle works for Broadway and lives in West New York, NJ and has a view of the skyline but obviously works in NYC nearly everyday. He's lived there for decades at this point. While he's from the Midwest I don't know that he could ever see himself living anywhere else at this point though he still comes back here every now and then. We've visited him a few times there it's def. a different pace; everything is going so fast. Last time we were there we got to see NYC a few days before Christmas. So beautiful. The year we went Saks Fifth Avenue had a Snow White display for the 80th Anniversary of the movie (to bring it back to Disney)

The amount of detail done is just amazing (these are just a few I took a ton of photos)
