Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Memorial Day is celebrated like Remembrance Day here in the USA. Veteran’s Day is similar but it focuses more on those who have served or currently serving. We still honor the fallen but that is more focused on Memorial Day. We spilt the holiday into two days after WW2 due to reasons concerning later on wars.

I was just going to post this, Memorial Day is closer to our Remembrance Day.

But then again we don't have Remembrance Day sales.

I am old enough to remember having Remembrance Day off school. Kids hanging out shopping was one reason they gave for no longer doing that in this province.

I think most chili is pretty similar.
You'd think but so many different kinds. I do think there's some basic ingredients though. And then chili at least here can also be regionally different (is it that way in Canada?) and then vary between families even when in the same area. My dad's chili was remarkedly a different taste and texture than my mom's and ours is similar to my mom's but still different.
I like to serve it with cornbread baked on top
I'm not the biggest of cornbread (neither are most people I know) but I did use to make this cornbread recipe that for some reason I really liked in college. I don't remember how I made it but I do know it was Jiffy Cornbread mix and sweet corn mixed in but I don't remember if there was anything else. I would eat it with sour cream on top.

Apparently a state favorite in my state is chili and cinnamon rolls but TBH never had that and I don't think that's as common right in my area compared to the rest of the state.

chili is really hard to make in a small batch
Def.

We halve this recipe so 1 1/2 lbs of beef and it's still enough for 2 night's worth for 2 people plus usually some left over for lunch for 1 person.

I like your idea of a chili cheese burrito never occurred to me to do something like that with the leftovers.

I am a mod…but not here lol

I didn’t say he can’t do something. I made a suggestion and he is more than welcome to ignore it, or tell me to pound sand.
For the record sports talk about things happening in our countries is relevant, including national teams (of any sport). If you wanted to talk about the Canadian National Hockey team vs the US Hockey team, go for it. Soccer is the most inclusive sport and most known. It has global following of 1 billion and I’m very passionate about it because of its sense of community makes this world a better place. You don’t have to like the sport, but a small discussion on this thread does not diminish your opinion at all.

The poppy tradition still happens on both days though.

How do you all feel about international tournaments expanding entrants? For example the North American World Cup 2026 is going from 32 to 48 teams (yes Canadians, that means you should never miss a World Cup again). If the Olympics did that with hockey or basketball for example would you welcome it or do you think it would diminish the tournament’s prestige due to adding inferior opposition? What do you think the reactions would be in America or Canada?

Does “Hidden Valley” have the healthiest kids in America? I remember asking my mom when I was 5 if it was a real place. 🤣

Hidden Valley Ranch was a real place. It was a guest ranch near Santa Barbara. The property was for sale a few years ago. The dressing was a real thing served to guests and then packaged as a mix, until they sold the rights to Clorox. And yeah - Clorox still owns them.

Wow. Thanks for sharing.

Even the thought of that is cringy and the Memorial Day BBQ's really wouldn't suit either. :scared: It is a civic holiday here in Alberta and a federal holiday; I wasn't aware it wasn't observed as a day off in all provinces. Every year there is quite a bit of talk about how disrespectful it is that inevitably some treat it as "just another day off" but that's life. It's all part of the glorious freedom we enjoy. :goodvibes

Ok, I thought of a question.

What is all the obsession over ranch dressing about? I tried it for the first time about a year ago and spit it out.
;) Now that I know I can get away with it, I'm calling "weirdo" on you again. :p Every other living being on both sides of the border eats Ranch in some form or fashion.

Unfortunately most holidays would go away if there was not an economic opportunity in the USA. :sad2:

Remembrance Day isn’t a day off here. If you work the day, you get 1 1/2 time, and if you don’t work you aren’t entitled to be paid for the day. Many businesses do still pay the day off, but it’s not a law.

:scratchin Hmmm - odd. Our corporation is based in Winnipeg and normally we all take the same civic holidays. I'm sure all the Manitoba business units got the day off with pay.
