Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

There are technically 3 Cups. The Cup on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame is the Permanent Cup.. The Presentation Cup.. is the cup that travels to games where winning it is a possibility in the finals and is the Cup that is presented to the winning team - it also visits the home towns of the players on that team over the summer months (off season)
The original Stanley Cup never leaves the Hall of Fame. It is the two original pieces - The silver bowl on top - which was the original Cup, and the bottom tiers where the names are engraved.

** edited to add there are 3 Cups.
Maybe they should just give the players on the winning team one of those fanboy replicas made by wrapping aluminum foil around several round boxes and their mother’s spaghetti strainer colander.

After all, those players frequently drop or dent the Presentation Cup during their drunken celebrations in their hometowns.

So in other news today, how’s the weather across the NA continent?
We have had a couple of small dustings of snow, but since it gets above 0C every day, it hasn't managed to stick. Super weird to be into January with no snow accumulation for our area. We did not manage to have a white Christmas.

What would be the top places that you would recommend based on where you have actually visited?
East coast:

FL
-WDW/St. Augustine/Miami

PA-
Hershey/Gettysburg/Pittsburgh/Philadelphia/The Flight 93 National Memorial

NY
- Hudson Valley/Adirondacks/NYC/ 9/11 museum/Long Island

CT
- Mystic Seaport

VT
- Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream/ Burlington/Killington/Hildene

NJ
- Trenton/Princeton/Atlantic City/Cape May

@Buzz Rules I can cross a couple of those off my list already. I have been to Ben and Jerry's. Not sure if I would call it a "must see" for the US. I like Tillamook Cheese Factory in Oregon (which also has tons of great ice cream flavours) MUCH better. We have also done Mystic Aquarium and area.

Ones I would add to the list: Monterey Bay Aquarium in California (Chicago has a great aquarium as well) and some of the museums in DC--the Holocaust one and the art museums especially.

Well, Ben and Jerry’s is a must see for me because I love their products. If you ask an American which American ice cream brand is their favorite, you will more often than not get a different answer every time.

If the USMNT and CanMNT meet in the Nations League final this summer and held in Canada, I may consider going if it’s in Toronto/Montreal. This is all dependent on the pandemic and finances of course but it would give me an excuse for a future vacation.

I'm just saying that as an experience (having visited both multiple times), IMO Tillamook is better if we are doing an Across the USA trip. Then again, why don't we plan on hitting both and see what the consensus is. Maybe I can change your mind...ha! You mention Ben and Jerry's, which is local to the northeast. If you were in the Pacific northwest, Tillamook would potentially be more prominent, and in the south, perhaps Blue Bunny.

I like Blue Bunny ice cream too. 😋

Except when it’s presented to the winner on US ice, as it has been for most of the last 29 years. :duck:

I think the actual Stanley Cup tours to the respective final cities too. I didn’t visit, but I think the Cup was on display in Philadelphia (and Chicago) when the Flyers were in the 2010 finals.

The actual, original Cup never leaves the vault room of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. There are two other versions of the Cup.one called the Presentation Cup. That is the one that travels. The other is called the Replica Cup and this is the one that is on display while the Presentation Cup is out of the building.

The original Cup hasn't been used in the presentation since 1970.

Canadians, is there an American classic food item that is on your bucket list, that you would try while vacationing in the USA?

Well… the sun was out an hour ago - gone now. We are in an unusually long period of sunless, gloomy, grey, damp weather here in the Toronto area. Not a single sunny day since Christmas 🙁

At least it’s not freezing cold.. smh.

We arrived back in the GTA last night after driving down to Florida along the i75 (Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia) and back up along a bunch of highways (Georgia, north and South Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia, Pennsylvania and NY). We went from gorgeous sunny hot days in Florida, gradually getting chillier and gloomier. I do hope the sun comes out for Toronto soon! It’s a big contrast from what we just had!

You would probably know better than me but does the MLS Cup stay in NYC or does it travel to the winning team?

Classic food, no. Restaurants? We tried several on our road trip! No specific American foods though, I can’t think of any other than fried okra and grits at the moment honestly!

The winning team does get a replica as do the players. The player version looks like this:
