Wait a bit. Rickey's page will be online soon.

I love Tears for Fears so its very good that he did something that wasn't overplayed like Shout or Everybody wants to rule the world.

I think I even called that someone should sing Tears for Fears way back when I did the 80's songs list in the beginning of the week -- last week.

I can't believe that Danny sang an old fashioned country singers song. I had never even heard of Mickey Gilley. If the 50+ crowd knew it (I'm saying 50+ because my DH is 40+ and hadnt heard of him), Danny is looking after a different demographic--the non voting ones.

Anoop was apologetic. Sweet but unecessary. He is unflalingly polite. I actually think the Excuse Me was misconstrued... I used to nanny for an couple who just recently moved to the United States from India. If this couple didn't hear or understand something they said "Excuse Me" as more of a "I don't understand" phrase than a rude "Well, excuse me" phrase.

Had to come back to respond to this...I am the 50 + person, I vote ( a lot) and I buy the Idol cd's if I like them. My kids...who are the so called age group can't be bothered to vote.

I also happen to like country way more than any other type of music, which is why I knew who Mickey was...never liked him though

You don't think David Cook won from teenagers' votes alone do you?

Were you the same poster that said thier mom liked Mickey gilley? I was assuming the poster was youngish (mid 20 or up) which made the mom 50 plus...

It was an old fashioned choice. I'm late-ish 30's and had never heard of him and I lived in rural country music central for over 15 years...

The Wiki page on Mickey Gilley showed an old 1950's pic which just screamed old time country. Either way it was a poor song choice.. granted 1980 had some not so great prize songs, but there were decent ones in there that you didn't have to do a 60's retread with an aging (in 1980) country star.

I don't know anyone that votes at all. I am certain that the votes have something to do with final outcome, but I know the producers have a say... how much of a say.. I'm not sure.

I missed his performance but I'm 36 and I know who Mickey Gilley is (and like him). My parents listened to country music (plus he owned Gilley's). Didn't y'all see Urban Cowboy? :teeth:

He was also cousins with Jerry Lee Lewis.

No I wasn't but I did post that he was popular back in the Urban Cowboy days. I don't get why Danny did that song either especially since that was not a countrified version at all.

I was in my mid 20's during the 80's, lots of bar hopping in those days so I know there was a lot of good music back then. No one tonight really picked it though. Allison picked a good song and so did Kris (or at least good in my opinion)

Wasn't Mickey Gilley wildly popular in country music in like the late 70s or 80s? Didn't he have a famous, famous bar called Gilley's or something?

I missed the whole song but knew it during the playback for voting.

I was the one who said it. I'm 20. My mom is 55.

I think he was the one that got the whole riding the fake bull craze started. Gilleys was in Dallas (again I think, I'm trying to remember from way back then)

Really... so he's responsible for all that foolishness? :) I never understood fake bulls in bars... let's liquor people up and then put them on a fast mechanical thing which induces vomiting...

I know some of you are not fans, but my opinion is that Adam is in a league of his own. He's incredible in my book!!!!! :cool1:

Nope, never saw Urban Cowboy. I have heard of Jerry Lee Lewis though.

UM.
I just found a fatal flaw with DVR'ing this show. While it's fun to FF all the commercials, it CUT OFF THE LAST PERFORMER. my beloved Adam! Singing a TEARS FOR FEARS SONG! I am not happy. Does anyone know where I can watch it online? Rickey's page isn't working. :headache:

As soon as I realized it was going over, I went into the PVR menu and extended the shut off time by 10 minutes. I'm going to leave it like that cuz this is craziness.

Yep, Gilley's was one bigass honkey tonk. :lmao: He's also cousins with Jimmy Swaggart, not just Jerry Lee Lewis. That's a trio of bad, bad boys. ;) Gilley's was in Pasadena, outside Houston.

good guess. My DH is in his late 40's and had never heard of him either-- but again he's the one who likes Brit pop and dance imports. I tease him and say he's way past the Rave stage.

I'm not liking how dialidol is looking. I think the judges might pull out the save if this is how it ends up.

Overall, an incredibly boring night. No one really stood out or performed great.

Top 8 – Songs from the Year They Were Born

Danny Gokey – Stand By Me (1980) – Sorry, but this version of this song sucked…I’m guessing that’s the 1980 arrangement. Those beginning notes were weak. By the end, he was alright, dawg, but kinda weak.

Kris Allen – All She Wants to Do Is Dance (1985) – Don’t know this song (was shocked to see it was Don Henley) and I didn’t love it song-wise…it didn’t really allow him to do a whole lot. That being said, Kris is still my favorite in this competition. Also, just wanted to say that while I liked Matt in the crowd last week when he played the piano, but I didn’t like it when Kris played the guitar this week.

Lil Rounds – What’s Love Got to Do with It(1984) – All this did was show that Lil is not Tina Turner. Lil can go home whenever…

Anoop Desai – True Colors (1986) – I thought Anoop sounded pretty good. But he’s definitely not a GREAT singer…he’s a good one.

Scott MacIntyre – The Search Is Over(1985) – I wasn’t sure it would get worse than Lil tonight…but Scott needs to go home right away. I honestly think I can sing just as good as Scott.

Allison Iraheta – I Can’t Make You Love Me (1992) – One of my favorite songs of all time…so I was nervous. She did the song justice. I wasn’t blown away, but she was the best of the night up until now.

Matt Giraud – Part-Time Lover(1985) – I really liked this until an awkward off note towards the end. And I guess he chose R&B as his style of choice. My favorite of the night to be sure.

Adam Lambert – Mad World(1982) – I liked Tracks of My Tears better, but this mellow side of Adam is definitely a better fit for me than the crazy side. Still, I didn’t love this tonight, but it definitely wasn’t anything incredibly special. Although it is certainly unique to Idol…There’s never been anyone else on the show like him.

Top of the Heap
Matt Giraud
Allison Iraheta

Middle of the Pack
Kris Allen
Adam Lambert
Anoop Desai

Bottom of the Barrel
Lil Rounds
Scott MacIntyre
