American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

My rundown of last night (rank out of 12):

Ace...Not bad, but not terribly good, either. At least he didn't sing this week like his jockey shorts were a bit too tight. :teeth: 10

Kellie...Love the personality, but if the performances don't improve, she really needs to go. 9

Elliott...The opposite of Kelly. Decent performances, but I just can't seem to like him. Has a pretty good voice, but only "pretty good", not "great". 8

Mandisa...Best of the night so far. She seems to be growing on me a bit. I still wouldn't buy any CD she put out, but I might listen to it if it came on the radio. 5

Bucky...I was worried for the Buckster knowing this was "Lame 70's Song" night, but he came through with flying colors. Probably shouldn't win the competition, but he definitely belongs in it. 4

Melissa.... :lmao: Sorry, but there is NO excuse for forgetting the words at this stage of the game. May have been forgiven if the singing wasn't so bad, but she was off key through most of the song. One of two who don't deserve to be in the finals. 12

Lisa....Glad to see her have a little fun with an upbeat song. I'm a big broadway fan, so I love her voice, but I can understand why some people may say she's been boring. I don't think it was her best performance, but that's mostly because I do love her voice so much when she's singing those ballads. 6

Kevin....Sorry, but "cute as a bug" - and I'm one of those people that hates bugs - will only get you so far. I've heard better singers at virtually every karaoke night at the local bar, and in most high school talent competitions. If it weren't for Melissa, this should have been his last night. 11

Katherine...What did the "stylists" do to my girl ?!? She went from adorable to Shania Twain in a mumu. Just leave her alone and let her talent carry her. The girl has an incredible voice, but the look last night was just distracting. She got most of my votes. 3

Taylor....What more can you say about Taylor? This performance was so far above everyone that came before him, it wasn't even fair to compare them. Would have gotten my votes, but I couldn't get through even a single time. Oh, and Simon's "drunk dad" comment had me :rotfl2: because it fits so well !!! 1

Paris...She's turning more and more into a Fantasia clone every week...and that is not a compliment. Not a bad performance, but it had the misfortune of following Taylor's, so it looked so much the worse in comparison. 7

Chris...Yeah, that wasn't Stevie that was the Chili Peppers. I hate the Chili Peppers. Still, I would rate his as the second best performance of the night. 2

All in all, a pretty boring night, save for Taylor and Chris. Here's hoping that Melissa is the one to go tonight, as she certainly deserves to get the boot after forgetting her lyrics in the process of butchering that song. So long as it is her, Kevin, Ace, Paris, Elliott, or (sigh) Kellie, I won't mind too much, but it should be Melissa that goes tonight.

Sorry. I'm a singer, I am not exaclty "idol" material but then I am too old now. If you don't know the song then don't sing it. Period. This is a performance and there are no excuses. None. Either you do it or not. I know that may sound harsh but that's the way it is.

Amen!

I totally agree!!! Go Chris!!
Except the other ones coming next for me were Taylor, Katherine, and Mandisa..I kinda liked Paris too. But the worst that I hope get voted off the next few weeks in this order: Melissa, Bucky (those 2 are a tied for worst for me) Kevin, Kellie, and then we will start in on the so so ones like Lisa, Ace, etc etc.

That's exactly how I think it should go! I really don't like Melissa and Bucky, so they can be the first two to go. It doesn't matter who goes first. And I really like Kevin and Kellie, but I know they're not as good as the rest, so they can go after Melissa and Bucky.

OK...WHO the heck did Bucky's hair??? While he was singing all I could think of was that he looked like a girl! I was dying! It was so unfortunate because up to that point he was the best performance. DH and I laughed out loud when Simon commented that his hair looked like Jessica Simpson's (and thank GOD Bucky said it wasn't his idea to do it that way!).

I tell you though that during every performance (and I mean EVERY performance so far) all of my critiques that I form during the performance match nearly exactly to Simon's...to the "T". It's like he's reading my mind..or maybe we think alike (no sugar coating). Weird.

Paula's critiques are useless. At least she seemed lucid last night and wasn't hitting Simon.

Taylor had better not color his hair...it's his trademark!

Let me start by saying that I am obviously not a fan of Stevie Wonder's music. Because this was the worst night ever.

Ace - Horrible. He tried to work the audience, but it came off as manic to me. He'd better hope that his looks carry him cause his performance won't.

Kellie - Go home Pickler. I'm tired of the country bumpkin routine and the performance sucked and bored me to tears.

Elliott - I usually like his voice, but tonight didn't do anything for me. Yawn, can someone entertain me, please? I expected more from him. Oh, and was he saying "I don't wanna bore you wif this"?

Mandisa - She has a great voice, but she screamed a bit too much tonight. I enjoy singing - not screaming. I thought the shoe removal was a bit oogie. Another so so performance.

Bucky - Okay, I love Bucky. He's a southern rocker and while his voice isn't perfect, his entire performance is always enjoyable to me. I think he rocks.

Melissa - No excuse for forgetting the words. I don't care if you change songs midway - LEARN THE WORDS! Her voice was decent, actually better than normal, but I can't forgive her memory lapse.

Lisa - I like her, but she is just not getting better like she should be. She does well with a ballad, but I didn't enjoy her upbeat performance as much as I thought I would.

Kevin - Painful. The entire thing was horrible. I also agree with others that you don't back talk the judges - to me, it shows that you can't take criticism well. And believe me, you totally deserved the criticism. His Chicken Little head has exploded.

Katherine - Wonderful! I love her voice and her stage presence is commanding. One of my top five for sure.

Taylor - It doesn't get any better than Taylor. He's great - enough said.

Paris - Annoying little girl. I can't stand her. Her voice is somewhat okay, but I just don't like her. And why did she have to sing her answers to Ryan afterward - that was just stupid. Is she trying to be Fantasia? Too many "yeahs" thrown in last night.

Chris - I really enjoyed his performance. While it was somewhat a cop out, it was totally brilliant for him to go with what works for him. If he would have tried to sing like Stevie, he would have bombed. Sticking in his genre really worked for him.

My favorites last night:

Katharine
Bucky
Taylor
Chris

Worst:

Kevin
Kellie
Melissa

OOH! I loved his hair!!! I thought it was gorgeous. It looked much better than when he pulls it back. It kind of took away from his teeth. I was as distracted. I'm partial to long hair though. On the flip side, I can't stand Ace's hair on him. I love when he wears the beanie.

Man what a boring night, EXCEPT for Taylor and Chris! If it weren't for them I would have been bored to sleep. Although I must say, for a country dude, Bucky did Supersitious pretty darn good! But Taylor and Chris were OUT of this world! They did exceptional jobs!!! GO TAYLOR AND CHRIS! :thumbsup2

sssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh..........I agree, I liked it too.

I actually find myself angry...and I mean truely LIVID that Kevin is where he is. :furious: That's all I can say. Nobody wants to hear my rant and it looks like I'm preaching to the choir. Could someone please take the telephones away from the 9 year old little girls? Or send them to bed or something? What really peeves me is when the judges give him positive comments. They know dang well that he's lousy. Praise God for Simon, the voice of reason. Ok rant done, really.

Wouldn't it be the greatest to see Taylor and Chris in the final 2. No kidding, it would restore my faith in this competition. If that happens, I'm going to throw an Idol party on finale night. Complete with a Kevin dartboard.

was it just me or did Bucky's teeth look better? or maybe I was so distracted by the hair....

You have to take it away from my almost 18 year old and 16 year old too! THEY think he sounds like Justin Timberlake! I thought I raised them so much better. :confused3 :teeth:

I join in your frustration that Kevin is still there. I thought his performance was like watching a high school talent show.

I am with you too. Our high school play this weekend had better performers. DD is almost 12 and doesn't like him either. If anyone young or old thinks he sounds like Justin Timberlake their hearing must be damaged from the iPod earbuds.

Overall I thought last nights show was pretty boring.
The only highlight for me was CHRIS! He rocks!!!!!!!!
Taylor, Mandisa, Bucky and Katherine were my other top choices.
I really hope a rocker wins it this year.

Kellie drives me nuts. Can someone really be that much of a country pumpkin?
I really thinks she plays to the camera/audience. One example was with her and Stevie Wonder. Why in the world was she crying when he walked into the room when a moment earlier on her tape she said she had never heard of Stevie Wonder or his songs? I can see Elliott crying over meeting one of idols, but Kellie?? Give me a break!

Paris is another one I cannot stand. Fantasia Jr.
Her talking voice drives me nuts-that stupid baby talk. I found it really annoying that she kept singing during her interview with Ryan.

I think it will be Melissa or Kevin going home tonight.

Kevin....sadly see ya next week thanks to all th 9-11 year old girls...you saw them bring the sign to him on stage and mommy and daddys let them vote because its so cute and they remember there Elvis and Marilyn Monroe crushes when they were young.

I'm sorry and there's no disrespect intended but I had to laugh at your Elvis and Marilyn Monroe comparison. I think we're actually to the day in age where the MAJORITY of parents with 9-11 year old girls would actually have had crushes on people more in the 70s or 80s like Leif Garrett, Andy Gibb, Rick Springfield, Farrah Fawcett, Matt Dillon, Ralph Machio, Tom Cruise, Debbie Gibson, Jon Bon Jovi time periods more. I'm 26 years old and even MY parents were after the time period of crushes on Marilyn Monroe or Elvis really. I'm not making fun, but isn't it funny how time marches on.... :rolleyes1

some weeks back they panned the audience and showed his [Kevin's] mom booing simon for his comments.

like mother...........like son

[/QUOTE]

Oh, now, that's not fair. People in the audience boo Simon all the time. Parents/Friends do it all the time on the show. Now, whether Kevin should've said what he said is another question (he shouldn't have, btw), but he definitely provided one of the more enjoyable moments of the night for me.

It's funny that Kellie has had so much attention because of her country bumpkin demeanor. Isn't Bucky actually a country bumpkin himself? Of course, he doesn't act as ditzy as she does but why isn't he getting the same attention for that?

Kellie should forget signing and go into acting...do they still produce the Hee Haw show??

While I can certainly understand where everyone is coming from, I know Kevin is there for some laughs. Really, singing part-time lover - :rotfl2: Kevin and his new persona have taken on a life of their own. I am sure it is great for the ratings. I felt that way about Scott Savol last year. I was as angry about him staying on so long. Will Kevin win? Absolutely not. Will he be responsible for the best one not winning? Nope.

He is an ok singer who needs to develop his talent. But - he is the underdog and there are a great many voters who will push him forward for awhile. As Simon says - eventually America will get it right.

I loved Simon and his reverse psychology last night with Melissa. We'll see if it pays off this week or next. I like her husky voice but she is certainly not of the calibre of the rest of the singers.

Now about Paris - I absolutely hated her interview. That just totally made me not think about how or what she sang. Her choreography and singing is just too old for her. I just think that is the way she has learned to sing and perform. She has a ton of talent but the package she delivers is not sellable in the AI world. I think when she goes - that will be the upset for most people. It would've worked the same for Gedeon - if he had stayed on. I actually see both of them as very similar singers. It would've been nice to see them do something together. Maybe he'll come back for a cameo with her in a future show.

Unless Taylor or Chris get voted off prematurely, I am just going to enjoy the show this year for what it is.

ps - I thought Paula looked a little glassy eyed last night. :stir:

I want Paris to go home because I'm tired of her bobblehead impersonations...and I think Ace in TERRIBLE.
