American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Wow, I was just reading the top 24's biographies and two of them, Elliott and Kevin are diabetics. Lots of other interesting info there as well. It's a pretty good group.

AI Bios

I really hated last night's show. I think AI has forgotten the performance part of the show. We got to see very little clips of the auditions and more of the "how can we torture the contestants" stuff. If I knew all they were going to show was the decision sessions, I wouldn't have wasted me time. Thank goodness they're into the final 24, now we get to hear some performances.

If Taylor Hicks had an album out I'd totally buy it today. He has such an amazingly soulful sound to him. Really different. I'm glad to the Mandisa made it, although she sounds like a lot of R & B/Soul singers already on the market. She's a big girl, though, like Frenchy from the first season (who I recently saw in Rent in NYC).

Go, Taylor!

Hey Foolishmortal -

Gotta root for the hometown boy. Ace is a Boulder guy - Fairview HS grad, parents live in Superior, and Ace has done the Nuggets national anthem numerous times.

We are also rooting for Taylor Hicks and Chris D. That would be a great final 3 (Ace, Taylor and Chris.)

I didn't know he did the Nuggs a few times....Well I guess he will now be who I root for instead of Chris...lol

GO ACE!!!!!!

Quick thoughts/predictions:

I LOVE Brenna gethers!!! Her attitude makes me laugh.

Paris will wear down as the competition continues, I see her getting about 6th-8th place

Not a fan of Kellie Pickler. Sob Story or not, she's pretty much like Carrie, except i think Carrie is better.

Ace, Chris, Lisa, and Mandisa are my picks to go far.

My personal favorites include Brenna, Mandisa, and thats pretty much it right now.

Radford will make the top 12 but will crash and burn similat to John Stevens.

The "attractive" girls (Heather, Becky) will not make the top 12.

:thumbsup2 I completely agree with you, I really like him, but I'm afraid the "movements" are going to be so distracting that he may not make it. He can count on my vote. OT-hey fellow Kentuckian

Ok, let me put on my flame suit and you Pickler fans fire up your torches-I just feel like she's a re-run of Carrie (I'm a Bo fan), only she's got the sad story to back her up and can get the bleeding hearts club to vote for her. While I agree that she can sing, I don't think it's fair that they profiled her so heavily so early. I admit I feel bad for her situation, but it's not a contest about that. My ds really likes her and the Heather girl and he picked Carrie to win last year the minute he saw her-so who knows. Fire Away ;)

Go Taylor and Chris :cheer2: Let's have a guy win this year!!

I agree about season 3 being just plain awful! ughhh...
I'm still a fan of Season 2..do you know if they sell that Season on DVD?
Anyone remember Keith?? "like a virgin" by Madonna during the auditions??

I'll put on my suit next to you. I don't like Kellie either. She's just tugging at a sob story for votes. She only belts out songs (her Kelly clarkson at the audition). In her interview on idolonfox.com there is a question that is phrased something like "Who is an American Idol to you?"... most contestants put down family members, parents, Jesus or heck even music teachers, or someone that has influenced them. Kellie Pickler said: Kellie Dawn Pickler.

Come on get over yourself.. already. The competition is full of better singers. And those overly highlights on her hair! Stop trying to be Carrie Underwood part two, and just go home already.

Yes, sad story. But honestly doesn't everyone have a sad story about something in thier lives? For example, Garet had his isolated cowboy world, Mandisa has her weight issues, Chris Doughtery has a wife and child at home, Partick Hall has left his wife behind as well. All the teenagers have missed school as well. Quit with the sob stories.

And also if she is so poor, why is she wearing Juicy Couture and over highlights? That aw shucks poor girl image is wearing really thin. Go back to Sonic sweetheart!

Didn't she say that she had never sung before people before when she did her first audition? Well, since she is a pageant winner, I doubt very much that she sang to herself to win.

You can only fool people for a short period of time. The truth all comes out on American Idol.

:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: Finally!!! Someone else who can see through her, thank you!! ITA-everyone has a story so why do they pick just a few to tell?

Tough room.

Cindy B: What makes you think that KELLIE bought those clothes? It is VERY likely that her church took up a donation for her plane tickets, clothes etc, or those friends who brought her to the audition. Why so mean? I can't STAND it. Walk a mile in someone's shoes...Even Goodwill occassionally has Juicy "couture" on the rack. Grow up.

GOD I hate when the threads on AI get to this point. Where Joe shmoe thinks they can just start bashing the contestants. The twins were actually rude and condescending. Kellie hasn't done anything wrong, except have a tough life and it offends YOU...What ludicrousness.

She has lied. She has had experience doing exactly this sort of thing while she is pretending that this is all so foreign to her.

From the Meadville Tribune:
... she chose as her talent presentation in the 2004 Miss Stanly County Pageant the song Broken Wing and went on to win the title, advancing to the Miss North Carolina Pageant where, at 17, she was its youngest competitor.

Once again, Kellie Pickler’s strong, sultry voice has won over an audience.
This time the 2004 Miss Stanly County has caught the eye of judges in WSOC-TV’s second season of “Gimme the Mike! Charlotte.”

“Gimme the Mike!” features local singers in the Charlotte TV market and was a huge hit last summer for WSOC-TV.

After initially auditioning at Concord’s Carolina Mall April 23, Pickler advanced from a field of more than 400 contestants to become one of the Top 50.

From there, the petite blond with the big voice joined the other Top 50 at WSOC-TV May 5 to once again compete as judges cut the field in half.

Singing just 30 seconds each of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and Wynonna Judd’s “No One Else on Earth,” Pickler was chosen one of 25 semifinalists.

“I wanted to do something different, give them something fast and something slow,” Pickler said of her selections.

To show off her wide vocal range, Pickler opted to sing the rousing, high-noted conclusion to the Simon & Garfunkel classic.

And just as she had done on the Agri-Civic Center stage at last year’s Miss Stanly County Pageant, her soulful, compelling voice landed on appreciative ears.

As a result, she will be competing on one of the five, half-hour shows that will begin airing June 28 at 8 p.m. on Channel 9.

The one-hour finale will feature five finalists and one wildcard contestant as they vie for a grand prize on Aug. 3 at 8 p.m.

The grand prize includes a 42” Enhanced Definition Plasma Television from Queen City Audio, Video and appliances with a retail value of $5,496 plus a five song recording session at Sound Choice and a two-nights stay for two at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville.

Thank you Damo... I knew that Kellie Pickler won a talent contest and was LYING to the audience.

She was in Miss North Caroline Paegant, so this schtick in Hollywood where she said "I've never sang with music" was a bunch of horsey doo!

Sweetie-- get me a cherry limeade please!

Sob stories are manipulative, and unnecessary!

I'm not a Kellie Pickler fan either, I think she is definately cute and talented, but reminds me too much of Carrie ! Give me Taylor Hicks, now he's a contender, I love his voice and the fact that he is so unique :thumbsup2

Who was the girl that mentioned she used to sing Opera and Jazz, I think. She had long, dark hair. I liked her and Bucky, but my first choice is definitely Ayla, the girl from Boston. Yes, I'm surprised how some people can remember names so well. I've gotta start writing this down!

YAY Ayla!!! Awesome choice!

I could be way off but I don't think comparing being overweight or missing school hardly compares to being abandoned by your mother and having a drug addict/prisoner for a father. :crazy2:

If she does make it far I hope it's b/c she has good performances and not b/c of her story. It's no fun to see people keep making it week after week when they shouldn't. Is there an "I can't stand Brenna Club?" I'd love to join. She is obnoxious! I like Taylor and LOVE the bald, kind-of rocker guy. WOW, is he HOT :worship: ! I'm looking foward to the competition finally beginning. No more twins Yea!!

After Kellie made the top 24, all the judges told her it was "well deserved." I feel that she must have the CHOPS.

AI was the one that exploited her background by doing her home interview. They knew it would make great tv. I feel that she has been through a lot at a young age but that is not why I like her voice. I think Kellie meant that she had never performed on tv. I think she is young and naive and she comes across to me as being genuine.

Don't forget that Fantasia never sang with sheet music because she couldn't read. I find it believable that Kellie could have memorized a song and sang it in a pageant without having formal vocal training.

My college roommate was Miss Dare County. She had little to no help preparing for the Miss NC Pageant. Stanly Co. is a small county. Some girls in this pageant have everything at their disposal and other have to scrape by. Half of the counties don't even send a representative to the state pageant due to lack of interest.

I could not stand Bo Bice, he was terrible in my mind....Constatine was just as bad....as was Justin in season 1...by the way they got the wrong winner in season 1...I cant remember her name right now but the black girl that finished in 3rd was the best singer that year, Ruben deserved his win as did Carrie, Fantasia is terrible and was not the best that year....I think Pick Pickler is a fine singer and should do fine....that being said I dont think she is the best singer in the group but I think she will go far....I am not quite sure who I feel is the best singer this year....I will decide after this week...I would like to see a white guy win it this year, not a racist statement by any means i just would like to see it happen....I like Taylor, David and Chris...I think ace will get the girl vote and Sway has no business in the finals....ok I am done.... :teeth:

not a pickler fan myself. i too agree AI chooses it's favorites by expoiting the stories...folks that get more air time are remembered by the audience more.
