American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

The producers have admitted that some people are put through to the audition with the judges just for entertainment value. They (the producers) are well aware they are horrible and will never make it past the judges. Except that horrible guy in the bare feet. WTH were they thinking??? He was awful! He doesn't stand a snowball's chance of making it to the first cut in Hollywood unless he shows something they saw that we didn't.

My favorites so far are David, aka Harry Connick, Jr and the 16 year-old twins that sang Luther Vandross to Paula.

The overweight girl had a beautiful voice and I'm so saddened by the fact that Simon felt the need to crack a joke at her expense.

I was minimally relieved when it was cracked AFTER she left the room (though I'm sure she saw it last night!). The teaser made it seem as though he said it while she was in the room.

And all I could thing of was--ummm....Ruben was the same size, dude!

Any Chicago-ites notice it wasnt Solider Field they were at? The showed the big crowd there, and then....

They were on Adams, during the Paula, Randy Simon auditions?

Do they send the ones who make it through to an "undisclosed location"??

And maybe all those double singers (the lady marmalades) were taped at the FIRST audtion (Solider Field) and because they stunk so bad, they moved on to humiliate themselves in front of the three of them?

And what was with the Tan BRATZ doll, holding her hand by her ear as if she had on a ear piece, and mic - while she was singing? Weirdo....

i noticed that....how could anyone from chgo not notice that

they did parts there, but wish they would have shown more of the city.

they did pick the small town nw of chgo for the corn maze with the twins.
corn mazes doesn't go with big city life though

OK...Leno gave us a way to figure this out. Last night, two women who work for his show were in Denver for the try-outs. They showed a big stadium. They were interviewing people in line. As the people came out, they were asking if they "made it" The ones that did pulled out a BLUE paper. The papers for Hollywood are gold. So, yes, I think there are many levels of try-outs before they get to see Simon, Paula and Randy. I know here in Mass, when they try-outs were at Gillette Stadium, it was ONE day. Not sure how it will play out on the show, but I think if you move on from the 1st public casting call....you see the judges on a different day and a different place.

DH and I watched with much enthusiasm last night and were not disappointed! I kid you not, at several points during the auditions, my DOGS actually picked their heads up, tilted them to the sides looking at the television and cringed! It was hysterical. Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke (and because we are sadists and have TIVO) we rewound the segment and played it again and the DOGS reacted the same way to the notes being butchered on screen! I nbelieve it was the "My son makes me cry when he sings" kid among others.

There were some real beautys in there!

I liked the crooner...David was it?

I liked the first set of twins.

I liked the heavy set woman who Simon poked fun at after she left the room (jerk).

Looking forward to seeing the bald-headed "rocker" from Greensboro, NC...just up the road from me! Heck, NC has produced a few AM Idols...

That explains how friends and family can join the singer for support. I just can't imagine all of them waiting in line for hours on end (or days on end) with their little ingenues (sp?)

All I can say is GO DAVID!!!!!!!!!!

My daughter goes to school with him as well! He is a really nice guy as well as talented. I really hope he goes all the way.

I loved seeing the footage of him singing in the car with his friends. The curly haired guy that was in the front seat with him was the school's Homecoming King this year. What a riot!

Another exciting season. Though I didnt notice any rockers like a previous poster said. The tan girl was disgusting and so was her mom. Loved Harry connick though(what a cutie) just hope hes not another Jon Stevens.

What a fun day at school today for all of you Crystal Lake H.S. students. David was great last night!!

I love these audition shows. Some people I have to wonder, what were you thinking?? The guy whose mom/grandma were there, WTH?? He, himself even knew that the song was awful. It was funny seeing Simon interact with the grandma though.

Another one that got through was the dental hygenist in the all girl band. I thought she was pretty good as well.

This is the first year that I liked the twins. I liked both sets. It will be interesting when they get to Hollywood though.

As for the auditions, I agree about the pre auditions before singing for the trio. I also think that the people that are choosen are both the best and the worst of the bunch.

It will be a good season!!

I also agree with the last guy. What was Randy thinking when he said "yes". He actually said it very fast........... :confused3 :confused3

Can't wait for tonight - should be another laughing night.

:rotfl: DH and I were wondering that too! She must not realize that singers do that because they are wearing an earpiece! What a ditz! Very scary when the mom walked in!

I know that there were funnier contestants but the sherriff made me :rotfl: I laughed so loud, I woke up DS

DH's favourited part was the girl trying to go up on the downwards escalator :rotfl: This is a man not easily assumed and he was :rotfl:

What were Randy and Paul thinking when they picked that last guy?  I thought "tan girl" was a riot and there were so many others. It was great and I can't wait until tonight's show!

Did you notice that "tan girl" had two segments and wore different shirts? She was one of the performers who butchered Lady Marmalade. :confused3 I know it was her because of that "tan" and the pink cellphone hanging from her jeans.

I was wondering about that too. Maybe they tape the pre-auditions and that's what that was from?

She looked like a real-life BRATZ doll....

:rotfl:

And behaved in keeping with the name as well !!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

As for the crazy jumping guy. It reminds me of when Simon sent the bicycle girl through. I think they do it just to add some spice.

You mean scooter girl? At least she could sing.

I think David is going to be this season's John Stevens.

We've had this discussion during previous seasons of AI. There definitely is a double standard. You never hear them make comments about the heavy set guys (Rueben, Scott, Matt), but if a girl with talent comes in who does not have the perfect body, Simon is sure to comment. The weight issue doesn't appear to have hurt Frenchie or Kimberly Locke.
